Print of the Month - Snow Fence
|
| | This month I’m featuring a shot I did a few weeks ago at the beach in Sandy Hook, NJ. With all the snow this winter, I knew people would want to see more snow photos! I love the fence angling through the photo with the snow blown to nearly the top. Like many of my photos, I kept the composition clean and worked hard to get just the proper angle. On a simple scene like this I may shoot it for 20-30 minutes and try many angle and lens combinations until I get the shot I like. It is interesting that the fence is there to help keep blowing sand off a walkway and it is unusual to have that much snow on the Jersey shore. |
| | Saying goodbye to a friend |
| | We lost a photographer friend last week. George Smith was the chief photographer at the Courier News when I got there in 1987. George, 85, was one of the good ones, the kind that there just isn’t enough of and losing one more really hurts. I wrote more about George on my blog. This photo of of George and our crew at the 1993 U.S. Open, his last major event before retiring. Click here to read the blog.

| | | Lots of workshops coming up I have lots of photography workshops coming up in the next few months in Vermont and New Jersey.I am doing more of my popular Lightroom classes in NJ and VT, the software that is much easier to use and more photographer friendly than Photoshop. I’m now using it rather than Photoshop for about 85% of my photos. I have also scheduled workshops on Lighting and Composition, Building a Strong Photography Foundation and Beyond the Basics. Whether you’re feeling confident about your photography or struggling to get consistent results, these workshops will help you get the photos you want. The complete list is to the right and full descriptions are at www.LorenPhotos.com/workshops |
| | Photo group exhibit If you are in New Jersey, my Somerset Photography Meetup group is having an exhibit at the Adult Day Center of Somerset County in Bridgewater. The opening reception is at 6:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. We will have a guest speaker, world-famous photographer and my traveling buddy Walter Choroszewski, who has published 18 photo books. Stop by and enjoy the photos and meet some other photographers. The exhibit hangs until March 31. |

Get the right exposure in snow
Since we still have the snowiest months coming, here is a vital tip when taking pictures in the snow. You have to give your photos more exposure than your meter is telling you, especially when the sun is out. A camera’s light meter reads the overall light in a scene and then calculates the exposure to average tonal value of 18% gray. So if the scene is mostly white, you’re camera will make the snow gray, not what we want. We need to increase the exposure up to two full stops more light to turn that gray snow back to the white that it should be. The same thing happens on bright, sunny beaches in the summer. And the opposite happens when most of the scene is dark, then we need to underexpose from the meter reading. So don’t forget that you are smarter than your camera and be sure to make the proper adjustments.
