Print of the Month - White on Red
This month’s photo was made just before Christmas in Bridgewater, VT. I’ve gone to this location many times and it always looks different. There is a nice vista looking out to New Hampshire and I thought it would be a good place to take my Fall Foliage workshop last Oct. but heavy fog hid the view. We did get cool shots of the sunrise burning through the fog and shots of this farm. After a good heavy 12” snowfall in Dec., I went up to the farm to see if the vista was looking good. It wasn’t, but the snow on the barn caught my eye and I worked the geometry of the roofs and windows until I got this shot. As always, I offer a special deal on the Print of the Month and then the price goes back up next month.
Photography workshops ready for 2014
I just announced the first of many workshops this year. One is for those people who don’t quite understand all the intricacies of their camera and how to get the most out of it. I’m offering “Building a Strong Photography Foundation” twice initially in NJ and will have it later in Vermont. The dates are Tues., Feb. 4 and Sat., Feb. 8. Get more info

I have to admit that I’m a huge Lightroom convert. I dabbled with the program for a couple of years and wasn’t impressed until I worked with version 4 and then version 5 came out and I’m blown away. It saves me a ton of time and most of my images look better than when I run them through Photoshop. So I’m spreading the word and offering my Lightroom seminar again, but with a little different twist. I’m breaking it into two sessions, one for those who want help setting up Lightroom and getting their photos organized and the second session focuses on getting the most pop out of your photos. If you are fairly new to Lightroom, I suggest taking both and if you’ve worked with it a while and feel comfortable searching and sorting images, you may want the second session. I’m offering both session twice in NJ, between Jan. 28 and 29 or Feb. 1. Get more info

Behind the Scenes
Two years ago in October I was driving the Vermont countryside at sunrise, checking some of my favorite farm scenes. The leaves were looking real good, the valleys were full of bright red foliage. I stopped at a farm on top of a hill just as the sun was popping up over the ridge. There was a bit of fog in the valley, which made the colors look even brighter.

About the only place I will trespass is open fields that don’t have fences. So I wandered away from the barnyard hoping for a better angle on the fog and looked back toward the rising sun. A big Holstein cow was wandering toward the barn and paused to look at me as several others were also coming down the hill. She was giving me big cow-eyes, I guess she thought I was going to feed her, and since I’m a sucker for cow-eyes, I pulled out my telephoto lens to get a shot of her. She was breathing hard and the sun illuminated her breath in the chilly morning air. Within seconds the other cows were in the shot and I was done. It wasn’t what I expected to get that morning but it turned out to be the best shot of the day.

Upcoming Art Shows
I have 18 shows on the plan for this year from March through Oct. The official acceptances haven't gone out yet, so the schedule is still flexible. I hope to see you at a show or two.
Don’t be afraid to photograph people.
Many photographers are hesitant to photograph people. I understand the reasons, but with the right approach, most people are honored when I ask to make their picture. Not because it is me asking but because I take the time to talk to them. I almost always let them know who I am and why I want a picture of them. I’ve found few people turn me down when I say “You have a great looking face.” It is a good line that isn’t too creepy and makes people feel comfortable with me sticking a camera in their face. When I try to sneak photos is when they get nervous, I only do that when I’m shooting hard news. So talk to people, many times the conversation is better than the photo. I wrote more about this on my blog.
