Using photography and travel to clear the mind
I'm not going to dwell on this crazy virus situation, you're getting bombarded enough already. But I do have to note how devastating this is for so many people. I've had to cancel several workshops, which hurts but I'll get through it. But since it has started I've had one close friend die of cancer and another learned he has cancer and is getting pummeled by chemo and radiation treatments.

I was fortunate to have Beth Payne, a specialist in resilience, give a free online presentation on using photography as a tool to get through this crisis. The video is at https://bit.ly/2V9zLuT and is a great way to spend an hour. One of the things Beth talks about is how photography helps you get your mind off other things and focused on one thing, just like meditation. I can't meditate but when I'm concentrating on photography and being creative I feel like I'm in another world, and that is great! She says another way to focus is to make plans for something fun, like travel. I've put together several destination workshops for later this year and most of next year, with more coming. Planned so far are Vietnam, Peru, Iceland summer and winter, Cuba, Acadia in Maine and Vermont Fall Foliage Workshop, Fall Foliage Weekend and Vermont Winter Workshop. Hopefully you can let yourself dream about getting away, make some plans and get your mind off the virus.
Free online seminars
I've been doing a series of free online seminars that hopefully are a pleasant distraction for photographers. Each week I try to host something that will help photographers improve their images. I'm using my paid Zoom account and have had over 100 people on some of the seminars. I've tackled subjects like Image Resizing, Resolution and Pixels, Eliminating Objects in Photoshop, Converting Photos to Black & White, Introduction to Lightroom, Exposure Modes and Printing Your Photos. Each session is recorded so you can watch on demand. Click on a link above to see the video. The next session is Light Painting Objects Small and Large on Thursday, May 7. More will be coming.
Get away to Vermont
I don't know about you but I need a getaway. I had hoped to go to Acadia National Park in early June but had to cancel that. So I decided to create a Vermont Getaway and Creative Photography Weekend June 26-28. Vermont has one of the lowest Covid-19 rates in the country but we'll still be practicing social distancing since there is plenty of open space. We'll get out and photograph barns, farms, covered bridges, waterfalls and the beauty of Vermont. The weekend will be structured to help photographers work on their creativity, which helps with resilience. Click for more info
Weekly Photography Chat session
Just talking about photography can be therapeutic so I'm hosting a Zoom chat session each Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. EDT. There is no format and we just talk about whatever photo things anyone wants to bring up. Just no politics or religion! It's a lot of fun and I'll do it as long people want to sign on, perhaps even after the lockdown is over. They are always at the same address: https://zoom.us/j/9082293447. Join us!
Cuba on my mind
You may have noticed that I have a fondness for Iceland, after several trips I can't be there enough. Cuba has that affect on me also. It has been on mind since getting back last month so I'm planning on going back - several times. The first workshop will be November 7-15, concentrating on Havana and the countryside around Vinales. It is a great time of year to be there. I'm also working on a January trip to the hinterlands of Cuba. We will spend time exploring the small local villages outside of Havana while photographing the authentic Cuba. We'll shoot abandoned buildings, locals in their environment, mechanics working on the classic cars as well as the beautiful architecture of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Details will be on my website within a week. Then in April will be +1 trip where your significant other will have their own guides to explore Havana's incredible museums, shops and culture while we photograph old cars, street scenes, abandoned buildings and fishing villages. We will be meeting up for meals where we can share experiences and there will be time for you and your sidekick to do some Cuban things together. It is going to be a great experience. I'll have details shortly.
Photoshop and Lightroom Workshops
This is a great time to work on your photos in the computer and I have a couple of online workshops focusing on just that. My Photoshop For Photographers Workshop is aimed at those who are new to Photoshop or not too comfortable with it. The workshop will be two 2-hour sessions on May 4 & 6 and work on things that photographers need to know about the powerful program. On May 2 is my Lightroom, The Next Level workshop which is for people who have some experience with Lightroom but want to get more out of it. Both workshops help you make a big difference in your photos.

Resilience and Photography In These Tough Times
I was thrilled to be able to present a seminar with Beth Payne, an expert in resilience management who happens to be an amateur photographer. It was a great presentation on using photography to help us get through this troubling time. Her thoughts are great for photographers but also I think for anyone.
