Subject: The Results Are In

Hey Friend,

Thanks for taking a few minutes and filling out the survey. I appreciate it!

Here's how things fleshed out:

46% of you want to focus on melody - that means looking at how notes interact and learning various scales and patterns.

29% of you want to cover harmony. We would go into depth on how chords work and learn various progresions.

25% want to talk about the rhythmic aspect of playing guitar. That's learning strum patterns, timing and time values for notes.

Based on what you’ve told me, we're going to study melody going forward.

Notes and scales...

Now before we get started, I want to give you my take on a couple things.

We’re going to look at some technical stuff, like reviewing musical scores and how to read them. We’ll talk about intervals and modes and modulation.

Most people think this is the stuff of music theory, but I want to shift your thinking on that a bit.

I learned a few years back that music theory isn’t really the study of musical application (notes and scores and beats). Music theory is all about learning to use musical components to affect the listener emotionally.

It all comes down to turning a feeling into sound so that another pair of ears can experience that feeling, too.

Why do you think movies and TV shows have soundtracks?

It’s to draw you into the story and have you experience the same feelings as the characters.

We’ll talk more about this as we move on down the road...

Harmony and Rhythm

For those of you that wanted harmony and rhythm, have no fear. Chords are created by combining individual notes, and I will talk about that more as we address melody.

And rhythm and timing are necessary when you are playing melodies, so we’ll spend time looking into these areas as well.

Tomorrow, I’ll start with some basic ideas to help you learn melody (and harmony) quickly. Have a great day!

Peace~
