Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) – August 26, 2012

Friends To The End

Some friendships last a lifetime. The work and commitment we put into these relationships reflect the faith decision we make for Jesus. This work and commitment are what we bring to the Eucharist.

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s podcast, we investigate truly friendship, a friendship backed by a deep commitment. Are we true friends of Jesus? Do we stay with him when others desert him?

FIRST READING Joshua challenged the people to choose between YHWH or neighboring deities. That challenge is as valid today as it was then.

PSALM Again we celebrate John 6 with Psalm 34. “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”

SECOND READING Ephesians contains one of the most controversial Biblical passages for modern Westerners: the status of the wife in marriage. Unfortunately, many do not read beyond the passage to the responsibility of the husband, nor do they read into the deeper meaning of marriage symbol. Marriage represents the union of God and humanity. It is THE institution of commitment.

GOSPEL This Sunday, we finish the Eucharistic narrative of John 6 with the question that underlines the entire chapter. How committed are we to Christ?

CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Joanie’s parents squabbled over travel plans as they drove. Joanie called on them to make a choice, just like Joshua did to the Israelites. In the story for the gospel, Andrea and Mary were best friends until Mary moved away. Andrea was loyal to Mary, but Mary let the friendship wither away. Do we allow our relationship with Jesus to wither?

FAMILY ACTIVITY Some friendships are temporary, some last for years. Share the gospel and discuss the virtues that make for a lasting relationship. How do these virtues help us to be better followers of Jesus?
