Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - July 21, 2013

Playing Host

Most of us have played host in our lives, but what sort of host are we? Do we converse with our guests or do we busy ourselves serving them? Where is a good balance between the two? And, where do our efforts to evangelize fit in? These are some of the questions asked in this Sunday's readings.

STUDIES FOR THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

DAILY READINGS FOR THE FIFTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

WEEKLY BLOG: Why don't take the time to share a meal with others?

MP3 PODCAST In this week's podcast, we address the necessary, but overlooked virtue of hospitality.

FIRST READING In a story from Genesis, Abraham played host to three strangers, yet to be given a gift in return for his hospitality that was far greater than he could imagine, a son.

PSALM Psalm 15 spoke to the need of acceptance, a welcome back to a place before God and his people.

SECOND READING St. Paul wrote his letter to the Colassians about the need for suffering. Pain had a purpose, as a part of Christ's ministry on earth.

GOSPEL In Luke's gospel, Martha played host to Jesus, but it was her sister Mary who received the greater gift than bragging rights as host; Mary took her place as a disciple at the feet of the Master.

CHILDREN'S READINGS In the first reading, Chris wanted to visit her best friend Crystal; their time together added to everyone's joy. In the story for the gospel, Bobbie wanted her birthday presents now. Like Martha, her impatience blinded her to the good times she could have with friends.

FAMILY ACTIVITY Take the time to teach your children the skill of being a good host, balancing activity with conversation.
