Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - February 3, 2013

You Can't Go Home

One of the sad lessons we learn as young adults is change. The home and family that seemed would be there for our support transforms. The young college student who returns home finds a new dynamic. The son or daughter that comes home for the holidays discovers a new environment. They soon learn what some of us already know. Once you leave, you can’t come home.

Jesus also learned that lesson when he returned to his hometown, Nazareth. He revealed his true identity and mission to his friends and relatives, but they rejected him.

THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: February 2, 2013

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s audio podcast , we discuss the power of rejection. Rejection, as painful as it is, can test the character and define the person. Jesus was rejected, and, was found to be the Messiah, God’s Holy One.

FIRST READING In the first chapter of Jeremiah, YHWH commissioned the prophet to speak to the people without fear. In prophecy, he would be rejected, but his words would stand strong.

PSALM Psalm 71 was a prayer for the elderly. As the strength of youth slips away, the elderly only has its wisdom and honor. Friends and family might fade away, but God would always be present and faithful.

SECOND READING In his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul defined the Church in terms of what will last: charity.

GOSPEL Luke presented Jesus as the successful son who returned home. But, when Jesus announced the fulfillment of Scripture about the Messiah and pointed that fulfillment towards himself, the people of Nazareth turned against him. Even their rejection, according to Luke, confirmed his status as the Christ.

CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Jackie overcame self-rejection to become a star basketball player. All it took was a little encouragement from a coach. God encouraged a shy man named Jeremiah, who would become one of Israel’s greatest prophets. In the story for the gospel, Charlie was the class clown. He always tried to make others laugh in class, even if he got in trouble. Charlie soon found out, however, that no one took him seriously because of his reputation. Jesus had a reputation, and was rejected for it. So, Jesus traveled to an area where he was accepted.

FAMILY ACTIVITY Jesus taught at his hometown, but his people rejected him. They could be happy, but they reacted with anger. Make the point of Luke’s narrative with the “Happy-Mad Faces” game.
