Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - July 7, 2013

Traveling with the Good News

The United States marks each summer season with three holidays: Memorial Day (in late May; beginning of summer), Labor Day (early September; end of summer) and the Fourth of July (height of summer). These holidays are travel times. People go to visit family and friends, see new sights or celebrate new events. Whenever we travel, however, we should take the Good News with us, for Christianity never takes a vacation.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - July 7, 2013

DAILY READINGS FOR THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

MP3 PODCAST In this week's audio podcast, we discuss travel. Summer is the time for vacation travel, but the followers of Jesus had a greater reason to travel: evangelization.

FIRST READING Second Isaiah addressed those who feared for the future. The prophet proclaimed YHWH would insure the future glory of Jerusalem with a mother and child analogy.

PSALM Psalm 66 was a song of thanksgiving. It lists reasons to give God praise from the personal to the universal.

SECOND READING In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul considered the cost of his evangelization effort. Paul had nothing to grab about, save the scars he bore for Christ.

GOSPEL In Luke's gospel, Jesus chose 70 disciples as front men for his traveling ministry. He gave them instructions to travel light, move quickly and accept any hospitality offered. In return, they were to proclaim the Kingdom and heal those in need.

CHILDREN'S READINGS In the story for the gospel, Judy was given only one suitcase for a three week vacation. How could she pack for that long of a trip with just one suitcase? Her father told her people would take care of her, just like the followers of Jesus depended upon others to care for them on their journeys.

FAMILY ACTIVITY When you plan for your vacation this year, plan to take along the Good News. Make your spiritual travel plans with your family.
