Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - February 10, 2013

Fishin'

When was the last time you went fishing?

If you’ve had any experience fishing in fresh water, you know that the best time to catch is in the early morning, when the fish swim to the surface for food and warmth. When the water warms with the heat of the day, they swim to lower depths.

Simon Peter, along with his contemporaries, knew this. When he returned after a pre-dawn expedition without any fish, he was frustrated. No more frustrated than with the traveling preacher who commandeered his boat for preaching, then ordered him to go fishing in the middle of the day. That day would change his life, for he encountered, then followed Jesus.

STUDIES FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s audio podcast, we discuss evangelization and realize it is a job we cannot do alone.

FIRST READING In Isaiah 6, the young prophet received his calling, the only prophet to receive his vocation in a Temple vision.

PSALM Psalm 138 is a thanksgiving hymn, a song of gratitude for God’s faithful presence.

SECOND READING St. Paul wrote the community in Corinth about the power of the Good News. More than just words, God’s message has the power to change lives and save sinners.

GOSPEL In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus took Simon Peter fishing. He caught an abundance. That catch was a foreshadowing of the fishing expedition we call evangelization.

CHILDREN’S READING In the story for the first reading, Danny had a nightmare because he lied to his mother. He was afraid, like Isaiah in his Temple vision, because he was a sinner. But, like Danny’s mother, God forgave Isaiah and gave him a mission. In the story for the gospel, Grandpa took Nancy fishing early in the morning. A few hours after sunrise, Nancy was surprised when her grandfather announced they were done. Fishing is only good in the early morning. Simon Peter didn’t catch any fish early one morning, but Jesus took him out to fish. They caught two boats full. After that, Jesus called Simon to follow him and catch people for the Kingdom.

CATECHISM LINK In this week’s Catechism Link, we investigate God’s call and our vocation to serve others.

FAMILY ACTIVITY This week, fish for miracles that will catch people for God in the “Fishing Game.”

Changes to the Weekday Gospel Reflections

You may have noticed a few changes in the Weekday Gospel Reflections. They're being sent the day before, mid-day in the United States; I moved up the delivery time for readers in Australia (who are twelve hours ahead). The Reflections also have links to the studies for the entire week and the coming Sunday, so you can look ahead, if you wish.

Keep your emails coming, so we can improve word-sunday.com!
