Fifth Sunday in Lent - C -March 17, 2013 Dropping the Stone How many second chances have you received in your life? I’ve had so many, I’ve lost count. I suppose the real question we should ask is: How many second chances have I given others? The willingness to withhold judgement, to give the second chance, to drop the stone (so to speak), can be a real test of our Christian commitment. DAILY READINGS FOR THE FOURTH WEEK IN LENT WEEKLY BLOG In this week's musings, we discuss social shame and its lack in the "social anarchist." MP3 PODCAST In this week’s audio podcast, we focus on the second chances than only come around once in a lifetime. The chance to forget about the past and focus on the promise of the future. FIRST READING Isaiah proclaimed God’s new activity, a novel change in people’s lives that would require trust. PSALM Psalm 126 was a celebration of good days, a time of return to Jerusalem and good harvest. SECOND READING In his letter to the Philippians, St. Paul admitted he lived a hard life, but it was worth the effort. His focus was on the prize, the call to the Father through Christ Jesus. GOSPEL In John 8, Jesus was confronted with the case of the adulterous woman by the religious elite. Yet, he flipped the question back to the leaders and gave the woman a second chance. How did he do this? He declared the woman “without guilt.” CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Mary forgot about a bad race she ran, so she could focus on the next race. In the book of Isaiah, God told his people to forget the old and concentrate on what he would do next. In the story for the gospel, Bob was embarrassed by a bully simply because he was not good a basketball. But, through the help of his brother, Bob got a second chance. The religious leaders tried to embarrass Jesus, even trap him. But Jesus didn’t fall for the trap. Instead he helped the woman at the center of the trap; he gave her another chance. CATECHISM LINK In this week's Catechism Link, we discuss the Communion of Saints. FAMILY ACTIVITY The crowd in this week’s gospel could not stone the adulterous woman, because they had to admit they were sinners, too. Recreate the scene with a “Stone Receptacle,” a place to put stones that represent judgments upon others. |
