Feast of the Birth of John the Baptist - June 14, 2012

Life Gets in the Way

Have you ever had plans that had to change because of unexpected events? The answer to that question is so universal, the question is almost laughably rhetorical. Of course plans change; life gets in the way. I had plans, but God has bigger plans. To ask another laughably rhetorical question: guess whose plans are better? Zechariah had to learn that lesson the hard way.

VIGIL TO THE BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

FIRST READING Isaiah 49 presents us with the same challenge the reading presented the exiles in Babylon. Stand up and be a light to the nations, even to strangers in new situations.

PSALM Psalm 139 equates God's power with his knowledge about the believer. I know he is all powerful because he knows me more than I know myself.

SECOND READING In Acts 13, St. Paul preached to his fellow Jews about the Christ; in doing so, he invoked the name of the Baptist as a way to bolster his claims.

GOSPEL In Luke's gospel, the Spirit moved through the desires of an elderly couple to have a son. The birth of that boy would bring scandal to the family, but glory to God; for God was in charge, not man.
