28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - October 13, 2013

Thank You, God

How many blessings do we thank God for? How many second chances and healings do we acknowledge with gratitude? I’m afraid I don’t thank God enough. Faith is and should be a exercise in appreciation, ongoing thanks.

STUDIES FOR THE 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

DAILY READINGS FOR THE 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

WEEKLY BLOG When should we help the poor?

MP3 PODCAST In this week’s podcast, the readings urge us to “keep our eyes on the road.” The road, of course, is our spiritual journey. Our leader is Jesus.

FIRST READING From 2 Kings, we hear the story of Naaman the leper, the Syrian officer who was cured in the muddy Jordan.

PSALM Psalm 98 is a hymn of contagious praise, singing a new song to the Lord.

SECOND READING 2 Timothy exhorted the reader to live in the presence of Christ, no matter the cost.

GOSPEL In Luke 17, Jesus was approached by ten lepers. Of the ten he cured, only one, a hated Samaritan, returned to thank the Lord for his help. He also returned to become a disciple.

CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, the slave girl Rachael encouraged her master, Naaman, to seek the God of her people for a cure. The story continues in the first reading. In the story for the gospel, Ginny caught the flu and was alone in her house, How she yearned to be better and to be with friends. The ten lepers in the gospel also yearned to return to family and friends. They asked Jesus to cure them. One returned to give thanks and become a follower.

CATECHISM LINK In this week’s Catechism Link, we investigate the name of Jesus Christ, Son of God.

FAMILY ACTIVITY Thanksgiving is the theme for this week’s readings. Reinforce this message with a family “Thank God” scroll, a place to write down all the things your family is thankful for.
