          While our Canadian government is yet to decide whether  or not to further commit  funding
of the TMT (thirty metre telescope),  a European
consortium of 13 countries, along with Brazil has given the go ahead for constructing what will be known as the European Extremely Large Telescope.
(E-ELT).

Here is the lowdown:

• 39 metre diamater mirror
• 798 precision hexagonal sections, that will act as one large mirror.

Where is this going to be built?

There is a 10,000 foot Chilean mountain called Cerror Armazones, and the instrument will be built on it's summit.

Construction should be completed by 2024, and astronomical research will begin in 2025.

     It's interesting that a fair amount of science today is done by amateur astronomers like yourself, Friend.

Seriously.

You don't have to own the world's largest telescope to do this stuff.

     Many amateur telescopes today have the capability of making discoveries, and doing scientific research.

Canadian amateurs such as Paul Gray, his young daughter,  Kathyrn Gray, Lance Petriew , Eric Briggs, David Lane, 
just to name a few.

       One of the best ways to do this is with astro-imaging.

And at the moment we have several Celestron astroimagers on sale.
