This week at Khan Scope
Saturn is up all evening. Jupiter is next.
Saturn reached opposition on October 4 and sits high in the southeast as soon as it gets dark. The rings are tilted only about 7° this year, so they look like a thin bright blade. That's a target for steady air and plenty of magnification. Jupiter is in Leo, rising around 2:30 a.m. and rising earlier every week as we head into winter.
Planets reward aperture, focal length and clean optics more than anything else. This week we listed some good used gear for exactly that, and we have long-focus Askar refractors in stock.

Saturn: high in the SE after dusk, below the Great Square of Pegasus
Fri Oct 23: the waxing gibbous Moon sits just above Saturn
Jupiter: best before dawn, halfway up the eastern sky

Takahashi MC Abbe orthos, unused
A customer trade-in, never used, in the original Takahashi boxes. Abbe orthoscopics are what experienced planetary observers reach for: a flat, distortion-free field, high contrast and almost no ghosting. Takahashi has discontinued the series. We have two of each.
|
|
Example: in a 1500mm NexStar 6SE, the 6mm gives 250x and the 9mm gives 167x. On most Toronto nights the 9mm and 12.5mm will see the most use.

Long-focus Askar APOs for the planets
Most Askar scopes are built for wide-field imaging. These are the ones we'd pick for planets. At f/7 and slower they give long focal lengths for high power, there's no central obstruction to soften contrast, and they cool down fast on a cold fall night. They're also fine imaging scopes, so they don't sit idle once the planets set.
