Headline News From Khan Scope Centre...

Comet ISON is now visible and has brightened over the last few days!

UPDATE: According to the latest news release from Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), one or more fragments may have detached from Comet ISON in the past days, as two wing-shaped features in the comet's atmosphere suggest. The fragmentation may offer an explanation for the comet's recent outburst of activity. There are two striking features within the comet's atmosphere that protrude from the nucleus in a wing-like fashion. While these so-called coma wings were still rather faint on November 14th, they dominate the images taken two days later. "Features like these typically occur after individual fragments break off the nucleus," Dr. Hermann Bohnhardt from the MPS explains. "Our calculations imply that ISON lost only one fragment or very few at the most."

The icy traveller has now cleared the eastern horizon for northern observers and is into the constellation of Virgo. Current brightness estimates have it at magnitude 8 - easily within reach of larger binoculars and smaller telescopes. However, ISON will continue to brighten as it nears perihelion and observers must exercise caution when it becomes close to the Sun. "If you want to try viewing ISON in binoculars before perihelion, don't wait!" says Sky & Telescope associate editor Tony Flanders. "It's appearing much lower each morning as it approaches the Sun. Fortunately, it has also been brightening rapidly, so it's actually getting a little easier to see. But nobody can guess how long that will continue."

Will the comet be a performer? Right now experts feel Comet ISON may only reach the brightness of Venus after it swings around the Sun, but that's still within easy visiblity of the unaided eye and small optical equipment. If you'd like more information on the location and celestial coordinates of Comet ISON - or when it passes near a bright star, planet or deep sky object, then visit our Keeping An Eye On Comet ISON webpage! (Be sure to check the page regularly and we'll keep you alerted to any changes.)

Giving the gift of astronomy...

Are you interested in giving the gift of astronomy to a family member for the holidays? Then don't be fooled by advertising cliches. Telescopes which feature high magnification or over-the-top computer features aren't always good choices and will probably end up collecting more dust than starlight. For about the same amount of money as a video game system, you can purchase genuine astronomical equipment which will last through a lifetime of curiousity and exploration.

Choosing a telescope or pair of binoculars for astronomy isn't always an easy task - that's why our representatives at Khan Scope are here to help. Be it a telescope for a child or telescope accessories for a seasoned amateur astronomer, we have what you're looking for at the prices you demand. Don't throw away your hard-earned cash on a department store telescope and get department store quality. We can assist you in selecting the right optical equipment for your needs at the amount of money you want to invest. Feel free to give us a call, email us or stop by our showroom with any questions you might have. We're here to help!

You can buy in-store or on-line with confidence when you shop at Khan Scope!
