Subject: Best Way to Observes Tonite's Annual Perseid Meteor Shower

Khan Scope Centre AstroNotes August 12th 2010

Tonite is the nite for the annual Perseid Meteor showers. (Thursday August 12th)First, Pray for clear skies..........
You don't need a telescope to observe meteor showers, all you need are your naked eyes, maybe a pair of binoculars.
You want to be looking towards the Northeast, in the direction of the Constellation Perseus.
When to Observe: Best to get out late in the evening, and observe past midnite into the wee hours of the morning.

Then show up late for work,  the next day, and get in trouble for same. If you pull a 3 day weekend, you are
entirely responsible!

New! Mallincam VSS+ Visual and CCD Imaging Camera

You can read an awesome review of the Mallincam VSS+, by Amateur Astronomer Glenn Norman,
in the August/September issue of SkyNews magazine. Glenn has been primarily a visual observer most
of his life, and he talks about not just the imaging component of this Canadian Made product, but
the Value of the Visual capabilities too.
Rock Mallin, has surpassed himself with this New model...it even has an hand remote control unit
for controlling the variable shutter speeds!

The BEAR Facts:

We received some comments from Readers in relation to the recent article in the last newsletter which pertain to how to avoid bear attacks.

Mr Guy Nason writes:

The "play dead" tactic is only recommended for grizzly attacks, and NOT for black bears! Since only folks in the Rocky Mountains need to worry about grizzlies,

My defense? I never go into the woods with someone I can't out run!  ;-)

How do you tell the difference between a grizzly and a black bear? Simple. Quickly climb a tree. If the bear climbs up the tree and eats you, it's a black bear. If it knocks the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly.  ;-)

Gee, Thanks Guy........

And Rick Bzdel writes:

“You only play dead with a grizzly bear.  With black or brown bears you MUST be aggressive and fight back. Playing dead does not work.  I have work in the Parks Canada system for over 23 years, and can safely say that this is the case.”

Since Rick is obviously  still alive, we should heed his advice!
