Pantry Clean Out Day 2: Salt

One of the biggest reasons that people shouldn’t eat too much salt is that it contributes to high blood pressure. When you consume salt, your body retains water. All of that extra water being stored in your body raises your blood pressure. So essentially, salt directly affects your blood pressure.

When your blood pressure is high, you run into other health issues. This includes strain on your heart, arteries, kidneys, and brain. This can cause significant health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and even dementia.

If you’re eating processed food items, there’s a lot of hidden salt in those foods. It’s estimated that 80 percent of the salt people consume comes from processed foods. Even if you aren’t adding salt to these foods, you may not even realize how much salt is in them.

It’s recommended that adults eat no more than 6 grams of salt per day. In reality, most of us are eating much more than that.

Wise Words ...

"We love salt, fat and sugar. We're hard-wired to go for those flavors. They trip our dopamine networks, which are our craving networks."
