Email Marketing, Segmentation, and Switching Email Services
(The problem that arose and the fix)

By Karen Cioffi

I mentioned a while ago that I switched my email marketing service provider to GetResponse. In that change, I had to transfer all my subscribers from iContact over to GetResponse.

While it was a pretty painless procedure, there was one HUGE problem that occurred that is giving me a HUGE headache now. All my subscribers were put into ONE group.

My email marketing is segregated into different campaigns (groups), one for each of my active websites, so there are six.

Prior to the transfer, my Karen Cioffi Writing and Marketing (KCWM) campaign was pretty evenly matched with WOTM, size wise.

When I transferred the subscribers they all went into my Writers on the Move (WOTM) campaign.

Being overly busy as usual, when this happened I didn’t address the issue immediately.

Now, the majority of my subscribers are all in a group focused on writing, fiction writing, freelance writing, and book marketing.

The problem is that KCWM is focused on content writing, inbound marketing, and some freelance writing.

Those who signed up to the KCWM site before the transfer expect valuable information relevant to that site.

Ah, the dilemma.

Okay, so why is this situation a dilemma?

When marketing, it’s super-important to have a targeted market. This means you provide relevant information to people who are interested in a specific topic. You know their wants, needs, problems. You provide helpful information for those people to meet those wants and needs and overcome those problems.

Now, if you have a group of people who want information on fiction writing in with a group of people who want to learn about inbound marketing, you’ve got a problem. A BIG PROBLEM.

The reason it’s such a huge problem is because you can’t effectively provide valuable information to both groups (different segments) at the same time. And, you can’t promote relevant products or services effectively in this situation.

What to do?

To make sure each of you who subscribed to KCWM or WOTM through iContact gets the content s/he expects and deserves, I’m asking you to re-optin to KCWM if that’s the information you want.

Once you choose KCWM, I’ll remove you from the WOTM list.

Please note, the WOTM list won’t get the more advanced Inbound Marketing strategies and tips.

Want Both?

If you want the information from both lists, please send me an email and I’ll make sure you’re in both.

Please be aware that if you choose both groups, you’ll receive two emails each week, not all the time, but possibly often.

Also, please note that if you do nothing and you're on the WOTM list, you won't receive the more advanced content writing and inbound marketing strategies.

I’m sorry for the extra process. If you have any questions, please send me an email.
(Please put "Re-Optin" in the Subject Box. My email address is at the bottom of this email.)
