Hi Friend,
Historical fiction lets you take readers to another time. But as always, the real question is: which times, themes, and story worlds are readers responding to now? That question matters because Historical Fiction is not one single market. It spans historical romance, historical mystery, women’s fiction, war fiction, biographical fiction, literary fiction, family sagas, and many period-specific sub-genres, each with its own reader expectations and competitive dynamics.
Good News: Historical Fiction Is Up
Overall interest in Historical Fiction has risen dramatically, with related Google searches growing by 3x since last summer.
There are probably several forces at play, including the continuing popularity of period drama and book-to-screen adaptations, as well as the genre’s strong appeal to book clubs and cross-genre readers.
As you may have noticed from my earlier emails this year, I am currently intrigued by the mutual impact of books and screen adaptations. Parrot Analytics reported in January 2026 that historical drama was experiencing a “notable resurgence,” with period series accounting for 10.5% of scripted premieres last year.
More important, though, is the commercial result for authors: after years of post-pandemic decline, our data shows that Historical Fiction sales-rank performance is now showing a sustained upward trend.
But as always, not all Historical Fiction sub-categories are affected equally. There are winners and losers.
Thus, I am happy to announce the new K-lytics Historical Fiction Report 2026!
The new report provides a comprehensive performance assessment of all 112 Historical Fiction categories.
You get a complete overview of the genre, and we reveal which sub-categories show the most significant upward or downward sales trends.
In addition, the study includes two Top-100 Market Snapshots: one for the Historical Fiction bestseller list and a bonus report for Historical Mystery.
These bonus reports include trending authors and publishers, book descriptions, curated keyword lists, pricing analysis, cover art, Kindle Unlimited vs Non-KU, and more.
You will find my detailed video commentary on the download page as always. Research less, write more. Be among the first to get your copy here:
Sincerely,
Alex
