Cozy Is So Back!
After years of post-pandemic decline, Cozy Mystery has continued its rebound: the sales ranks of Amazon’s lead Cozy Mystery bestseller list on Kindle are back at their pre-pandemic all-time highs.
Streaming as a Genre Amplifier
Last year, I wrote that Netflix was more a catalyst for the rebound than its root cause. Since then, the screen side of the story has only grown:
- The Thursday Murder Club had 69 million views worldwide in the second half of 2025, according to Netflix’s own engagement report.
- Daniel Craig’s Wake Up Dead Man had 20.2 million views in its first three days on Netflix last December.
- In January, Netflix followed with Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, starring Mia McKenna-Bruce alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman. It went straight to #2 on Netflix’s global English-language TV chart and reached 28.6 million views by the end of June.
- Richard Osman says he is working with Netflix on a series based on We Solve Murders. The second book in that series, We Chase Shadows, came out last month.
Studios don’t place that many bets on a passing fad.
Genre Rejuvenation
But it’s not only the cozy category sales that have seen a refresh. We finally see some movement—perhaps even a shake-up—in the genre. Fresh takes on cover art, stories trailing the Murder Club phenomenon, some new authors we haven’t seen before, and more.
Indie Authors Uniquely Positioned
Indie authors are well placed to benefit: more than two-thirds of the top authors in our Cozy Mystery rankings are indies. It simply looks like the major publishers can’t keep up with the rapid release of highly professional series that leading indie authors have pulled off in this genre.
Of course, a genre this successful is competitive. To stand out, you need to know what sells: covers, tropes, titles, blurbs, categories and price points. That’s what our research gives you.
