Chase Eye-Catchers

Storm Control – I’ll start with an 11yo! However, he’s ‘unexposed’ in Vets Chases, having had his first start in one at Chelt on 15th Dec, on what was his first run of the season. This horse has a poor record fresh and shaped here as if needing it, over an inadequate 2m5f, given he’s best over 3m+. He moved well on the front end and was headed 2 out, before fading badly. He should strip fitter, is now below his last winning mark and i’d be shocked if he couldn’t go close in a 3m Vets chase at some stage.

Bourbali- running in his 4th chase at Wincanton when last seen, 2nd under 12-00, giving 18lb to an equally progressive horse in Pilsdon Pen (who himself shapes as if 3m could unlock more in time, despite being flat bred). Bourbali isn’t the biggest but he can jump, fast, generally fluent, makes ground in the air. There’s a chance 2m4f may stretch him, given he blasts out in front and tries to stay there. I think he has another handicap or two in him off 129, especially smaller fields he can dominate, and he handles Good ground also. Maybe a more testing 2m could be up his street, and potentially in a slightly better race under a lighter weight. They pitched him into the Wayward Lad (G2 Novice) at Kempton, which suggests they may think a bit of him, but he got in a pace battle there, outclassed, faded. In any case, he must have more chases in him.

Passing Well – ran at Newbury on 30th Dec (3.35) and maybe this could be a novice handicap chase worth following. This horse moved like an animal who has plenty more to come, 1/3 chasing, his win before this run when beating a well handicapped horse of Venetia’s, Heva Rose, who won her next start. It was an odd run here, dropped out, pressing leaders from the 12th, dropping to 3rd 2 out when seemingly outpaced, before rallying and staying on strongly to the line. It suggested 3m+ must be worth a go, this race over 2m6.5f. It can also be marked up because he pulled for his head for a large part of the race and it was some effort to come back at them after the last. To me it suggested there could be a fair bit more to come when learning to drop the bridle and settle. He was 2nd in a decent Ascot chase, in front of Twinjets, Are U Wise To That and Cruz Control. The two in front here were unexposed chasers with some solid form to their names. He’s a stayer to keep onside. They could also try launching him from the front over shorter.
