It is a peculiar thing when a husband and wife become parents.
Marriage itself is already a kind of revolution. Anyone who enters it with open eyes quickly discovers that his time is no longer entirely his own. His money is not entirely his own. His energy, plans, comforts, ambitions, and sleep are no longer entirely his own. Then children arrive, and each child places a profound exclamation point at the end of those realizations.
Whether that sounds tragic or glorious depends largely on how one sees the human person.
Like the famous optical illusion that can appear as either an old woman or a young woman, parenthood presents us with a choice. Is it fundamentally a story of loss? Or is it an invitation into something greater than ourselves?
Many modern men and women seem trapped somewhere in the middle. They surrender some things reluctantly because circumstances demand it. They embrace other sacrifices joyfully. But much remains untouched, carefully protected, preserved for self. Perhaps this is what the Book of Revelation means by lukewarmness. Neither hot nor cold. Neither fully surrendered nor fully resistant.
The tragedy is not sacrifice itself. The tragedy is sacrificing without understanding what the sacrifice is for....
