Visualisation Training, Multiple Opponent Video, & 15% off for one week!

Hi Everyone!

Visualisation TrainingApologies for the late newsletter. It’s been a very busy few weeks and this had been the first opportunity I’ve had to get it all put together. Still, at least we are in the first half of the month!

This newsletter sees a new podcast on visualisation training (section 1), a new online video showing a live multiple opponent drill (section 2), details of a number of martial podcasts you should be listening to (sections 12 to 15), Chris Denwood’s new book (section 17) and details of next month’s Dragon Tree Martial Arts Summer Camp; at which I’ll be doing 4 hours of teaching (section 7).

We also have details of all the upcoming seminars in the UK, the rest of Europe and the USA; as well as information on closed-door groups and seminar opportunities in 2012.

And for 1 week you can also get 15% off anything you buy from the website, in addition to the standing special offers! The means a potential saving of up to £32.48 if you buy 3 DVDs anytime during the next seven days.

There is lots more too, but I’ll keep this introduction short and let you checkout the contents list for yourself!

Stay lucky and happy and I’ll speak to you all again soon!

All the best,

Iain

1 – New Podcast: Visualisation Training

Visualisation TrainingIn this month’s podcast I want to discuss my personal take on visualisation training. Visualisation training is where we mentally rehearse a given task or scenario in order to help us prepare for that task or scenario.

I’ve made use of visualisation over the years and I’ve found it to be very useful. It can be a great supplement to physical training and can help develop skill, improve performance, boost confidence and help give you a positive self-image. It can help you rehearse so you are well prepared for any task you are undertaking. It also has uses in our everyday lives outside of the martial arts too.

Visualisation can be done anywhere and with no equipment. You can train as a passenger in a car, while sitting at your desk, on a plane, before you go to sleep at night, before you get out of bed in the morning, when injured, when tired, when ill, and so on.

In this podcast I explain what visualisation is, how I personally practise it, how to ensure it is effective and some of the more common problems you may come across.

We also have a little bit of news relating to the online bunkai videos we have been adding to the website and Youtube over the last few weeks.

I hope the information in this short podcast is useful and I’ll be back with another podcast very soon.

Please follow the link to download the podcast or to listen to it online:

2 – Live Multiple Opponent Drill Video

Multiple Opponent DrillHere are details of the latest online video. In our dojo we have many different types of sparring; each with specific goals and objectives. The purpose of this drill is to bring home the idea that “fighting” is not the best way to deal with multiple enemies. Tactical positioning and trying to escape are the best idea. However, the switches in this drill mean you are frequently starting from a bad position i.e. with one or more enemies having a secure grip.

Because the “gang” are allowed to attack freely, it also brings home how fundamentally flawed the interpretations of kata are that have the karateka surrounded, with the enemies waiting their turn to attack. Take away the choreography and it does not work. The way to make use of kata in these situations is to get angles (which kata & bunkai teaches) and use the griping and striking skills we get from our bunkai drills to facilitate escape.

Real situations are chaotic and messy and hence the live drills we use to prepare for those situations need to be chaotic and messy too. A good rule for such drills is that if if looked "good" then it's not good. We need the chaos so was can apply method to the madness in a realistic environment. However, with sensible safety precautions they are no more dangerous than standard sparring.

Gichin Funakoshi describes making use of similar live multiple opponent drills – where he had to evade others and keep them at bay – in “Karate-Do: My Way of Life” where he said that, “It is hard to think of a better way than this to learn to defend oneself against more than one opponent”. So there is a traditional precedent for such live drills being a part of karate too.

This is just one of many multiple opponent and live drills that we make use of and I’ll bring you much more footage of those as the weeks and months go by.

4 - Practical Kata Bunkai & Extreme Impact Online Videos

I've continued to keep adding videos to the website and YouTube. As I told you in a recent update the aim is to add at least one video a week and so far I'm managing to keep up with that :-) I intend to take a pocket video camera with me everywhere I go in order to capture plenty of footage that I hope you will find interesting. If you follow the link below you can view the videos we have made available so far:

Practical Kata Bunkai You-Tube Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/practicalkatabunkai

Steve Williams and I also have the Extreme Impact YouTube channel and we are also adding regular videos to there too. We recently added one on combinations and we have two more "in the can" on a self-defence pad drill and open-handed striking. They will be added soon:

Extreme Impact You-Tube Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/extremeimpactma

All footage of this nature is obviously a bit “rough and ready” and lacks the professionalism and quality of the DVDs and downloads due to the lack of professional cameramen, sound people, directors, editors, etc. However, I nevertheless hope such footage is of value to those who view it/

If you want to know when new footage has been added you can like me on facebook, follow me on twitter, or subscribe to the you tube channels.

5 - Limited opportunities for 2012 UK Iain Abernethy Seminars

As much as I enjoy the seminars, I’ve been cutting down on the number of UK seminars in order to give me more time concentrate on private group instruction, for teaching overseas, other projects and to spend more time with my family. Last year I did around 40 seminars in the UK, this year I will do around 25 seminars in the UK, and in 2012 I plan to do just 20. Four UK seminars have already been booked for 2012 which means that there are only sixteen dates left available for the whole of 2012.

I mention this now so I’ve been fair and given people plenty of notice. As always, dates will be allotted on a first come - first served basis so if you would like me to teach in your dojo in 2012 it is something you may wish to consider arranging sooner rather than later.

As always, if there are any questions on this please just drop me an email at iain@iainabernethy.com

6 - Closed group in-depth training opportunities

This year has seen me working in private sessions with groups of dedicated individuals who want in-depth and detailed instruction in kata bunkai and pragmatic karate. I have found teaching such groups to be hugely satisfying as it’s nice to see people progress over the weeks and months. In 2012, I intend to work with a couple of closed-door groups to provide highly detailed, complete instruction in the applications and drills for dedicated kata in a way that is not possible in any other format.

The plan at the moment is to run two in-depth groups: one covering Tekki / Naihanchi and one covering Kushanku / Kanku-Dai. As well as covering those kata as the complete fighting systems they are, it will also be possible to cover the introductory instructor side of things with suitable people within these closed door groups. Places will be limited to just 10 people in each group. If you feel this could be of potential interest to you, please keep and eye on these newsletters for more details later in the year.

8 - Kissaki Method DVD and online preview

Kissaki-Kai DVDIn the last few newsletters I've been telling you about a forthcoming DVD by Don Came 6th dan and UK Kissaki-Kai chief instructor. Well it's now available and I can tell you it's superb! You can buy it from Amazon.co.uk and I've copied all the details below. The DVD has great production values (same team who did my last DVD) and its good close-range no-nonsense stuff. Just the kind of thing I know you'll all enjoy. Definitely one to add to your collection! You can also watch a preview via this link: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/kissaki-method-vol-1-presented-don-came

BLURB: The Kissaki Method: Kissaki-Kai is karate returned to its practical and functional roots. It was founded by Vince Morris, 8th dan, in 1993 at the behest of senior black belt students who had become disillusioned with what the "traditional" karate schools had to offer in terms of "real" fighting techniques. It is less a style but more a series of principles guided by Sensei Morris' "Rules of Combat", a groundbreaking analysis of strategies derived from many real world conflicts. Here, UK Chief Instructor Don Came, presents a series of drills following these Rules that you can apply to your own teaching or training, which can also help you unlock the hidden applications of the kata or forms within your own system. Contents include: Flow drills + defences against a series of common methods of assault, including straight and hook punches, combination punches, headbutts, and various grabs seen as a precursor to a strike... all practised from realistic ranges! These can be used to enhance your own lesson plans and be incorporated into any martial system.

Buy Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004MYL22K

What Iain Abernethy thinks: “This DVD is superb! Great production values, superb presentation and solid no-nonsense content. When so much of modern karate is practised in an unrealistic manner from an unrealistic range, it’s always heartening to karate presented as it should be! The DVD shows a great number of close-range flow drills that make use of the key principles of the Kissaki-Kai method (that can be utilised by practitioners of all styles) and methods found within the traditional kata. Don Came 6thdan explains and demonstrates these drills in a clear and authoritative way which makes for a very “information dense” DVD. Close-range, practical and exactly what karate was and should be. As I say, superb! A must for all pragmatically minded karateka.” – Iain Abernethy 6th Dan BCA, BKA, EKF

What Geoff Thompson thinks: "This is where my heart is. This is my home, where I came from. Everything I have done in martial arts and beyond started with basic karate. Like Don I simply followed the bunkai and it led me to a labyrinth of technique and art beyond and above what was being taught on dojo floors around the country. Don takes it another step forward, addressing the all important avoidance and pre-emption at the beginning of the DVD he then goes on to explore flow drills and destruction techniques - taken straight from kata - as the all important and oft overlooked support system. The techniques that we need if pre-emption does not work or is not available to us. You need this DVD in your library, it is excellent, beautifully made and expertly demonstrated. I highly recommend it to all those looking for a deeper understanding." - Geoff Thompson

17 - Chris Denwood's New Book: 'Respecting the Old, Creating the New'

Chris Denwood BookIain has kindly given me some space in his newsletter to let you all know about my recently published book entitled 'Respecting the Old, Creating the New'.

It is essentially an accumulation of articles written over the past five years or so, along with some philosophical statements of thought on traditional karate for self-protection and personal growth.

Included is a selection of work made up of previous magazine submissions, regular column instalments, pieces sent to various online resources and some previously unpublished stuff too that has been sitting patiently on my hard drive waiting for a project like this to materialise. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the end result :-)

The book was officially launched at The Martial Arts Show Live in Birmingham at the beginning of May and since then I've received some excellent feedback and reviews. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have already purchased a copy - your support is massively appreciated!

Anyway, here's the blurb and associated website link for more information and (should you wish) to order online. The book is available now from Lulu.com: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/respecting-the-old-creating-the-new/15591615

Best wishes,

Chris

Blurb: British karate teacher Chris Denwood presents a collection of his articles and short philosophical thoughts on the analysis of traditional karate for civilian self-protection and personal growth. Heavily illustrated with over 230 pictures, covered in this book are thought-provoking sections on history, kata bunkai (analysis), training methods, theoretical study, pragmatic application, overarching concepts, as well as some of the author's personal insights, experiences and stories.

“I love reading books that not only give you interesting information, but get you thinking too. It’s for that reason that I’ve enjoyed reading this book by Chris Denwood. He’s a great writer who communicates his points clearly and in a way that will provide all karateka with plenty of food for thought. Highly recommended!” – Iain Abernethy

18 - Western Renaissance Martial Arts Documentary

Here is a documentary on western renaissance martial arts. It is quite long, and probably best watched in sections. A great primer for anyone wanting to know about old western systems: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/renaissance-martial-arts-web-documentary

19- Peter Skillen Charity Martial Arts Event

Peter Skillen (not the one who did the photos and paintings for my books) is organising a charity event to raise money for Ashmount School:

http://www.ashmount.leics.sch.uk/classpages_list.asp?Section=109

You can find more details here: http://www.justgiving.com/Peter-Skillen-climb

There is also going to be a day of martial arts training with leading coaches and I’ll forward that information when I have it.

Message from Peter Skillen:

In 2002 I made a massive change in my life. After living a reckless, depressive unproductive life fuelled by alcoholism I signed myself into rehab joined AA and got sober. I promised myself that when I made ten years sober it would be time to give something back. Well I am now in that tenth year and my aim is to climb mount Kilimanjaro and all sponsorship raised will be going to ashmount school, a Specialist School for Cognition and Learning.

http://www.ashmount.leics.sch.uk/classpages_list.asp?Section=103

Please Give generously knowing that your donation will be going to a fantastic cause.

I will also be filming my climb for a documentary project and will aim to show the result after the climb and invite everyone that donates to come along to a showing of the film and to see how their donations will help generations of children for years to come.

Thank you for your kind support.

Peter

21 - Iain Abernethy Instructor's Courses (express your interest)

It’s been a few years now since I last ran an introductory instructors’ course. Demand has been quite high and hence I’m looking to finally run one early next year. I’m letting everyone know now because places will be limited and hence I need to make an interested persons list as soon as possible. To be eligible for the course you need to fulfil the following criteria:

All participants must hold a dan grade.
All participants must be a certified instructor with their governing body
All participants must have teaching experience and be actively teaching others
All participants must be over 18 years
All participants must be in good health and have valid insurance
All participants must have had sufficient exposure to Iain's methods (i.e. a regular at the seminars etc)

If you meet the criteria, and would like to do the course, please send me an email (iain@iainabernethy.com) and I’ll keep you in the loop as things progress.

Note: If you are training under one of the small number of instructors to complete the FULL instructor’s course, please contact them about this. Because they will be able to help you prepare, I’m planning a special “fast track” course for the students of existing full instructors later in the year.

22 – Marc "Animal" MacYoung in UK in 2011

Here is your chance to train with Marc MacYoung in September! I’ve been a fan of Marc’s work for decades and it was great when I got to meet him in person last year. He’s a great guy, with a superb teaching style, and his material is as practical as it gets. This is not an opportunity to miss so be sure to contact Mick and let him know you would support this event. Mick Franklin is the organiser you can find all the details below. Be sure to contact him ASAP.

All the best,

Iain

(Left to Right: Nick Yang, Marc MacYoung, Rory Miller, Al Peasland, Iain Abernethy, Kris Wilder)

Message from Mick Franklin:

Greetings,

Marc, Me, Nick, Al, Kris, and RoryMy name is Mick Franklin, I am a 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate but today I am writing to you as a representative of Conflict Communications. I wish to make you aware of our upcoming course on De-escalation. This 1 day course will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Marc MacYoung, a man who has lived and worked on the sharp end of life dealing with violent and aggressive people, but more importantly was able to attain and master the skills to defuse potentially violent situations, and then successfully pass those skills on to martial artists, hospital and police staff all around the world.

This course really is one of a kind. Rather than just being an "aggression management" course you will learn the source of all conflicts and more importantly what to do about them. The skills you will learn are not just useful for preventing violent attacks, but will also greatly benefit the way you interact with people in all situations, including at work and in your personal relationships. Your martial arts techniques may be superb but can you recognise when someone really intends to hurt you? Can you defuse a violent individual? Do you have the skills to explain to the police and courts what steps you took to avoid it becoming physical, and explain, in a legal sense, why you did what you had to do?

Course Dates: September the 3rd for De-escalation, September the 4th for the Body Mechanics in Martial Arts course
Course Costs: £40 for 1 day only, or £70 for both days
Location: Edinburgh
Duration: 8 hours each day

If you would like some further insight in to Mr MacYoung's training you should begin with his website, I think you will be impressed:

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/

I have also included a brochure of the De-escalation Course for you below.

If this is something you would like to press ahead with, or if you just have some questions, then let me know. I am taking note of interest now.

Kind regards,

Mick Franklin

P.S. Marc MacYoung will be running a course on Body Mechanics in Martial Arts on the day after the De-escalation Course. This course will show you how to generate more power from your techniques (regardless of your style) and to apply a critical eye to why a technique works or doesn't work, as well as making students aware of important elements that are currently missing from the way bunkai and kata is taught in most schools. I can not say much about it now -keep an eye on the magazine Martial Arts Illustrated for the first news on this exciting material in an indepth interview with Mr MacYoung. I can honestly say, however, that despite my 10 years of full contact Kyokushin Karate I have learned a lot from Marc in a very short time about good technique and generating power.

De-escalation Course

Marc MacYoung is a highly respected expert on conflict and violence. He is the author of 15 books and 6 videos dealing with different aspects of de-escalation, conflict resolution, self defense and use of force. He has conducted many seminars for police, security, hospital staff and martial artists alike around the world. He has lived and worked on the sharp end of life, including the mean streets of Los Angeles, and working in security and correctional services.

The sharp end is not an exaggeration. Despite 100's of incidents involving physical violence, he feels his greatest achievements are the 1,000s of incidents that were peacefully resolved. He has been very successful at talking down violent, sometimes psychotic, people. He honed his communication skills because the options were 'de-escalate or bleed.' He knows first hand conflict situations are emotional, stressful and scary.  His proven ability as a 'Thug Whisperer' isn’t magic. It is a learnable, teachable skill.

Teaming up with Rory Miller, a retired Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff and CERT leader, they developed Conflict Communications. During the development of the program for law enforcement, they realized insights and conflict strategies developed for de-escalating physically violent people also work with employees, managers, co-workers, spouses and teenagers. The had stumbled across the Rosetta Stone of conflict. Hence, Conflict Communication training is available in six different areas.

Law Enforcement Training
Correctional/Sworn Officers
Human Resources
Legal
Social Services/Schools
High Risk/Conflict Management

Why this course can help you:

*One, your safety. Knowing the 'check list' of pre-attack indicators, you can tell the difference between a loud and emotional -- but harmless -- threat display and when someone is preparing to attack. We also teach the importance of tactical positioning as an important component of de-escalation (without threatening someone you can still show them you are not safe to attack)

*Two, there are two kinds of bad use of force, excessive and unnecessary. Excessive is rare. Unnecessary is a legal nightmare you don't want to find yourself in. This training reduces these kinds of unnecessary incidents.

*Three, it indemnifies and protects you by teaching you to better articulate use of force incidents -- especially the build up to violence.

*Four, We are the only program that addresses how not to get caught in the emotional and primitive 'monkey dance' of conflict. One of our mottos is 'De-escalate yourself first.' If you can't do that, you are heading for an unnecessary use of force incident. You cannot be professional and let 'the monkey drive the bus.'

Before you can de-escalate someone else, you must de-escalate yourself.

We give you the means to do that.

Before you can apply other training you must have emotional control.

We'll show you how

Before you can find the 'best answer' for a situation, you have to know what's happening

We'll teach you the key points to look for in conflict

Before you can explain yourself in court, you have to know what happened

Well teach you how to articulate what you did to calmly resolve the situation and why you had to do what you did.

This program doesn't replace any previous training.

It makes it work better.

But more than all of that, this program is about improving communication and strategies to reduce and better deal with conflict. Other programs teach tactics. This program teaches WHY conflicts happen and how they manifest in different circumstances. We also teach about the irrational, emotional 'monkey brain agenda' issues that -- until they are addressed -- the conflict will NOT be resolved. These unresolved agendas which cause conflict will return. Whether the same fight over and over again or an argument over something completely different.

Basically it isn't that other programs don't work.  The information is  sound and technically correct. What people are lacking is this foundation to be able to apply those techniques out where they need them. We supply that. We don't replace any training, we just help people apply it out in the field.

This program is also useful in the workplace. Within many organisations there are serious problems between workers and departments. Politics, conflict, people not meeting professional standards, legal issues, troublesome behaviors and sometimes even physical violence  ... the list is endless. And this list of problems costs more in time, money and waste than the correct training to deal with them effectively ever will.

That's where we can help. By teaching about the dynamics of conflict, monkey brain agendas and default emotional scripts, those issues that create ongoing conflicts and tensions within a group can be addressed and problems actually solved. When that happens productivity goes up, money is not only saved, but made and the likelihood of being sued goes way down.

Yes, this is a de-escalation program. Yes, it is a conflict management program.  Yes, it is a conflict resolution program. It's all of that and more. What it really is is a bridge over the gap between training and application. It is what a person needs to know so they can take their previous training and actually apply it in a stressful, emotional and even dangerous situation.

Pad-work drills: We will look at the vitally important area of pad-work drills.
