The post covers what Funakoshi said about the fist in his various books (along with illustrations), the main justifications for it, examples of masters who didn’t use it, when it fell out of favour, and why I feel it most likely originated as a “makiwara hack”:

As soon as this newsletter is sent, I will be editing together two new videos for the app! The first is on the “cultural” parts of traditional karate that I no longer practise. The second one is an instruction video on the basics of skipping, that I will be adding to the workout section of the app. I figured it may be a nice addition for those who have the goal of improving the fitness in 2020.
