The Priceless Training Partner by Steve Williams

Legal Note: The picture accompanying this article was inserted by Iain and is in no way is meant to suggest or even infer that Steve Williams is recommending Iain Abernethy as a training partner!!! ;-)

Steve and IainEvery martial art and combat system offers the practitioner the opportunity to train alone. For many people this makes up a large proportion of their training regime. Now good progress can still be made here, and I personally spend several hours each week developing footwork, shadow sparring and working bags, but there are still limitations with training alone. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to give yourself constructive feedback or to gauge how hard you are striking just by the swing of a heavy bag. Making you work beyond your comfort zone, when alone, takes an enormous amount of mental strength and many people never really master that process.

For some people training alone is the only option, and I have massive respect for everyone who does this and it can still be very productive and worthwhile. For the many people who have the option of a training partner, it is one of the most precious things to enable us to progress and develop our skills.

I have had many training partners over the years, granted some have been better than others, and some have been more fragile than others and have ended up broken! Fortunately though they do mend. All, however, are people that I have developed a special bond with as they have endured the same insane workouts that I have, always in search of improvement.

If you’re training in a club environment then you will work with many different partners, this can be a good and a bad thing. When you work with many people it gives you a good indication as to how good your skills are in relation to others. It also teaches you as to where different peoples strengths lie in relation to their genetics and how fighting ranges change due to people’s different abilities and reaches. Unfortunately when working with many people you never reach the level of trust and understanding which you get from the same regular partner.

If you are fortunate enough to select your training partner then two things need to apply, firstly commitment. You must try to ensure that your partner has the same commitment and work ethic as yourself, not turning up for a training session is strictly forbidden. Remember, excuses are for weak minded people who lie to themselves and others and who clearly lack the focus and motivation to reach the next level. A hit and miss partner does not just effect their training but yours too. When you have found the right person who is as committed as you are, then regular, productive sessions will always take place.

Secondly, if you can find someone with a similar ability to yourself, then this can make it easier when selecting drills. You will also find that their perception of what should be happening during a session will be similar to yours.

Now you have your ideal training partner, this allows you to use some of the best training aids available: the focus mitts and the kick shield. Sparring is now also an option…it just gets better!

Let’s just take a moment to look at what you want to achieve, I would guess that you have similar aspirations to me. To hit harder, faster and longer than anyone else and to achieve this with good form.

So, back to the pads. It is vital when you train with pads that the holder gives you solidity when you strike, otherwise you may as well hit fresh air. Good solid pads allow you to develop impact without damaging joints and for many people the practical application of what we do is of paramount importance.

You have now got the right partner and equipment and Extreme Impact can assure you of the best training drills and principles, so what’s next…? Positive feedback and encouragement. Nobody has a better view or feel than your training partner so they are best placed to give you constructive feedback and you to them. Remember; keep it positive, everyone develops better when confident and motivated.

Extreme Impact drills are challenging but nothing worthwhile ever came without hard work and dedication. Your training partner’s encouragement will allow you to get through the most fierce session, battling till the end. Together you can achieve so much more than training alone.

Enough Said!

Crossing the Pond Details: The last few days!

Crossing the Pond Information! It recent newsletters I've been telling you about "Crossing the Pond" which is an amazing training opportunity in August for those on either side of the Atlantic! Well you now have around three days in which to book!

The European event has people travelling from as far away as Spain and Norway! The USA event also has people travelling from all over the states! This truly is a not to be missed event.

The first event will take place in Seattle in the USA (14th and 15th of August) and the second event will take place a week later in Coventry in the UK (21st and 22nd of August).

This seminar is open to all adult martial artists - regardless of background, style and level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by the instructors - will be issued to all participants.

Nicholas Yang - Chinese Long Fist and White Crane

Al Peasland - Real world self-protection

Iain Abernethy - Close-Range combat / Applications of kata

Marc “Animal” MacYoung - knife, gangs, guns and jail

Kris Wilder - Okinawan structure, power, and mind set

I’m thrilled to be able to meet up with members and visitors from the USA as well having the opportunity to teach as part of such an amazing line up! I have to say this is an amazing mix of the “traditional” and the “reality based” (not that I see a difference between the two terms) and I’m sure serious martial artists in both the UK and USA will be very keen to be part of this history making event!

Upcoming Iain Abernethy Seminars!

Below you can find details of my upcoming open seminars until the end of 2010. I look forward to seeing you at the next event in your part of the world!

As you can see 2010 is now fully booked and dates for 2011 are filling up. This year I have dropped the number of dates available for seminars by around one-third. Next year I intend to drop the number of available dates still further because, as much as I enjoy the seminars, there is now simply too much demand for me to meet and I need the time to do other things. I really do hate to disappoint people, so if you do want me to visit you in 2011, you need to be thinking about that sooner rather than later.

Please don't hesitate to contact me (iain@iainabernethy.com) should you have any questions on any of the upcoming events below!
