New Podcast! - Your Questions Answered!
Hi All,
Welcome
to the latest iainabernethy.com newsletter! This month we have a new podcast and
a new online video for you! The new podcast is listeners’ questions and it
covers the following topics: realism in training, kicking in self-defence,
scenario training, training with joint injuries, the evolution of kata, the
physiological and psychological effects of conflict, the specifics of female
self-defence, home training, using weights to increase punching power, time
management for training, and loads more! It’s around one hour twenty minutes
long so make yourself comfortable when you sit down to listen to it!
The video shows a bunkai drill for Kushanku / Kosokun / Kanku-Dai and was filmed
at the seminar in Idar-Oberstein, Germany earlier in the month. The drill is
intended to act as an aid to memory and as time efficient form of practise for
some of the applications associated with Kushanku / Kanku-Dai. I hope you find
it of interest.
In other news, my books are now available on Kindle! Kindle books can be
purchased from all Amazon websites (just search “iain abernethy” to find them)
and viewed on kindle devices or any device with the Kindle Ap installed.
We’ve also got lots of other news too so please check out the contents list
below and see what is of interest!
Thanks once again to all for their support of these newsletters! Please be sure
to keep telling your friends about them as every bit of support helps me to keep
bringing you this material.
Speak soon!
All the best,
Iain

1 - Your Questions Answered! (New Podcast)
It’s
been sometime since we last turned the podcast over to the listeners, so I’ve
put that right this month. I asked for questions via the website, facebook and
twitter and we did our best to cover as many of them as we could.
Topics covered include: realism in training, kicking in self-defence, scenario training, training with joint injuries, the evolution of kata, the physiological and psychological effects of conflict, the specifics of female self-defence, home training, using weights to increase punching power, time management for training, and loads more! It’s around one hour twenty minutes long so make yourself comfortable when you sit down to listen to it!
This podcast is a little different from the normal as I’m joined by a co-presenter; namely the lovely Becky. She’s a goju practitioner who comes from a good karate family (her granddad, dad and brother are all black belts) and, in the interests of full disclosure, she is also my girlfriend :-) Becky asked me the questions and then we chatted around the subjects in order to ensure they were thoroughly explored. I think this format works really well with this type of podcast and I’m sure you’ll find it an interesting listen. Thanks once again to everyone who submitted questions for the podcast! I’m sorry we could not get to them all.
WARNING: Becky is not from my beloved Cumbria and hails from the south of England. Her accent is therefore a little strange and I’d ask you all to bear with it ;-)
I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with more soon!
You can listen to and download the podcast on this webpage: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/your-questions-answered-podcast
2 - Kanku-Dai / Kushanku Drill (video)
This drill was filmed at the seminar in Idar-Oberstein, Germany in November 2012. The drill is intended to act as an aid to memory and as time efficient form of practise for some of the applications associated with Kushanku / Kanku-Dai. This short clip can't convey how the drill is intended to sit in the totality of practise; nor can it capture all that was covered in the ten hours of practise at this seminar. Viewers need to appreciate that this short clip is not intended to be a substitute for in-depth instruction. It is nevertheless hoped that the clip is of interest.
You view the video on this webpage: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/kanku-dai-kushanku-drill-video
3 - Iain's Books now on Kindle!
My
books “Mental Strength”, “Bunkai-Jutsu: The Practical Application of Karate Kata”,
“Throws for Strikers”, “Arm-Locks for All Styles” and “Karate’s Grappling
Methods” are now all available on Kindle via Amazon! Kindle books can be viewed
on kindle devices, and almost any device that has the Kindle App installed i.e.
iPhones, iPads, PCs, Macs, etc.
REAL BOOKS: The demise of many book stores, printing costs, storage costs, shipping costs, the high percentage that Amazon take, etc means that my books will probably not be reprinted when stocks run out. Printed books are becoming less and less viable so if you do like “real books”, and you’d like any of mine in that format, then it would be wise to purchase sooner rather than later: http://shop.iainabernethy.com/acatalog/Iain_Abernethy_Books.html
FUTURE BOOKS: I’ve had a few books on hold due to the difficulties faced by the publishing industry, but if Kindle does prove a popular format I will consider putting these new works out in that medium.
Thank you all for the support!
4 - World Combat Association News - New 17 Minute Online Arm-Lock Video
Congratulations to Nick Hofele and Carsten Schmitt of Germany who successfully
gained their WCA 4th dans in karate last weekend! Both men are WCA Instructors
and the gradings consisted of kihon, kata, bunkai, written papers, throws,
weapon defence, escapes, dealing with multiple enemies, impact drills, etc. Well
done to both on a very impressive performance and a well earned grade! You can
see some pictures from the grading on the news page of the WCA website. I think
their smiles and sweat soaked gis tells it all!
http://worldcombatassociation.com/?page_id=18
I have just added a new seventeen minute video on arm-locks to the members
section. In the video I show a few different arm-locks (both standing and on the
floor) and discuss how they can be combined. I also look at the role of
arm-locks in both self-defence and fighting. The video can be viewed by all WCA
members and instructors by signing into the website:
http://worldcombatassociation.com/
One of the key aims of the WCA is to help share information and raise the
profile of instructors who wish to share what they do with the wider world. All
WCA instructors should therefore feel free to get in touch about and articles,
drills, videos, etc that they have produced and we will be sure to share it
widely through all our various lists. Drop me a line at
iain@worldcombatassociation.com
if you have any questions about this.
Membership of the WCA continues to grow and we have had a number of syllabuses
approved now. Thanks to everyone for their support and I’ll be back with more
very soon!

5 - Old Man's Bubishi: An introduction to Bunkai from Karate's Kata
"I
love this book! Oldman’s Bubishi includes some really interesting kata
applications in a very easy to follow and engaging way. The applications are
“deadly serious” and I found the carton illustrations much easier to follow
that the vast majority of photo sequences I’ve seen. Don’t make the mistake
of assuming that the humorous illustrations mean the information is not for
the serious martial artist! This is solid stuff! There’s no denying the
illustrations are very humorous though! I found myself giggling more than
once at the factual expressions of both “Oldman” and his unfortunate “uke”.
I guess the best description for the book would be “serious information
delivered in a light-hearted way”. Just what good martial arts should be!" -
Iain Abernethy 6th Dan
Now available from Prairie Martial Arts. "Oldman's Bubishi", is a richly
illustrated introduction to the Bunkai of Karate Kata. The book by Mark "Oldman"
Cook focuses on the widely practiced kata series, the Pinan / Heian / Pyung Ahn
series. If you have learned this kata series or even the Hyung and Poomse
variations they inspired in Korean Karate and Tae Kwon Do, this book is for you.
Let Oldman and his nemesis introduce you to the bone breaking beauty of the kata
/ Form. Dance class is over. It's time to put the fun AND function back into
your karate training.
Oldman's Bubishi, is the visual record of a deep dive into the waters of Karate
Kata by Mark "Oldman" Cook. It is an 8.5 by 11", 136 page, spiral bound butt
kicking. Written in the international language of line, with over 500
illustrations, it's not meant to sit on a shelf, look pretty and collect dust.
It is a workbook for you to take onto the mats with you. What's inside? An
artist's perspective on Kata. Insights on finding form, function for yourself.
It's time make the art your own. There are sequential drawings of each of the
five Pinan / Heian / Pyung Ahn Kata and an insightful, practical step by step
analysis of each.
