Subject: October Newsletter: New Podcast - What is Kata? / Applied Karate Outtakes

October 2009 Newsletter!

Hi All,

Welcome to the October newsletter! The first thing to tell you is that a new podcast has been added to the blog! The podcast is called "What is Kata?" and in it I return to basics and discuss what kata is actually for. Some see kata as a kind of shadow-fighting, a physical exercise, a form of moving mediation, a "movement drill" ... but for me, while kata can be all those things, they are not primarily what kata is all about. As you'd probably expect, as part of the podcast there is a good bit of discussion on the relationship between combat and kata. You can find more details in section 1 and I hope you all enjoy it.

I've also added a selection of outtakes from the Applied Karate DVDs to the blog. These were from the filming of the introductions, conclusions and interviews which took place on the south coast of England. During the filming we were interrupted by airplanes, cars, postal workers, cyclists and a whole host of other stuff too. The guys at Summersdale edited all the problems into a 50 second montage which is pretty amusing (even if it is at my expense). I hope it gives you all a few giggles (section 3).

The main thing I'd like to do in this introduction is give a massive thanks to all those who have purchased the New Pinan / Heian Drills DVDs (see section 2). We have never had any of our previous DVDs sell this quickly on launch. The feedback has been great and it's particularly gratifying to hear that many of you are already making use of the drills in your classes and on your syllabuses. Thank you for the support!

We've continued converting the DVDs to downloads and this month we managed to add Seminars 1, Seminars 2 and Bunkai-Jutsu: Volume 1 (Pinan/Heian Series). The download format seems very popular and we hope to add the rest of the Bunkai-Jutsu series to the downloads over the next few months.

In section 4 you can find out about the "Extreme Impact" units that we filmed late last month. It was a fun day, but the demonstration of around 60 high impact drills took it's toll! Both Steve and I were suffering the next day! I feel sure this training system will be of great interest and I'll keep you all informed as things develop.

The final things to mention is that section 10 of this newsletter has a quick update on the progress of The Society of Applied Traditional Martial Arts (SATMA) and that Jissen 6 is coming soon (section 6)!

I hope you enjoy this newsletter, the podcast, the outtakes and all the other stuff we have for you this month. Please check out the contents list below and see what interests you!

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

1 – What is Kata? (New Podcast)

What is Kata?In this latest podcast we look at what kata actually is and what purpose it serves. Kata can be a kind of shadow-fighting, a physical exercise, a form of moving mediation, a pointless dance, a relic that should be consigned to history, a repository of forgotten "secrets", and a whole host of other things besides. All of these views on what kata is can have merit depending upon what is meant by "kata". However, none of them get to the heart of the matter in my view. In this podcast I explain what I see as the core purpose of kata.

As part of the discussion that leads to my definition of kata, we also discuss how kata came into existence and the nature of the link between kata, kumite and combat. I also look at the relationship between principles and techniques as it relates to kata. Whether you agree with my final definition of kata or not, I hope that you enjoy the podcast and find it interesting and entertaining.

I'd like to thank you all for your support of the podcasts. All feedback and suggestions are always gratefully received (iain@iainabernethy.com) and I'll be back with another one very soon!

2 - New Pinan / Heian Drills DVDs Update & Reviews

As mentioned in the introduction, the new Pinan / Heian Drills DVDs have got off to a flying start! The DVDs show around 40 two person drills that cover the "primary bunkai" for the whole of the Pinan / Heian Series. The thing that people seemed to really like was the way the drills follow the kata series with each one building on the next in a way that develops a holistic combative skill set. Below you can find the initial feedback on the DVDs and a review by Michael Rosenbaum.

Watch the introduction to Volume 1 online: http://blog.iainabernethy.com/?p=310

Feedback on "The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System" Volumes 1 & 2

"The DVDs are clear, concise, very informative and simple to follow. They are a great way for students to get a good understanding of the concepts and principles of the Heian/Pinan katas. I wish I had these 10 years ago!" - Lee Taylor

“I think it’s great how you can clearly see that each kata builds on the principles from the previous one whilst still adding more” - Greg Lynham

"Thank you for the DVDs. I’ve had a run through them and they look superb, definitely the best yet!" - Simon O'Brien

"I have recently received your 2 new DVDs (The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System). As with all of your previous DVDs I have purchased I am more than pleased with the content. I am currently a 2nd Dan Taekwondo student and instructor and these drills will really help in class to add more depth to the applications of forms whatever style of martial arts practiced." - Colin Mowatt

"Thank you for your latest DVDs demonstrating two-man Heian bunkai drills. As usual they are excellent quality! I believe with your books and DVDs (and seminars!) you have created/presented an invaluable karate-do legacy." - Paul Davis

"These DVDs pretty much cement the Pinans to their true potential. Brilliant DVDs!" - Nigel Lee

"The DVD's are very good quality with excellent content, as usual, and I look forward to putting the drills in to practice." - Paul Morey

"More excellent work that you've managed to put on to DVD. Totally brilliant." - Harry Boag

“Iain's DVD's have always been informative and well produced. However, in my opinion the latest DVD's are the best yet. Anyone looking to implement practical applications into their training or syllabus needs to have a copy. For the less experienced, It's also an excellent way to pick up the principles of Bunkai Jutsu” – Paul Newman

"The DVD’s are great. It is excellent as there is loads of stuff on both volumes." - Andrew Daly

"The presentation is very clear. The drills are demonstrated and explained very well. If you've ever been to one of Iain's seminars it's like having him and the boys conduct one in your own living room. If you've any interest in bringing the Pinan/Heian kata to life then these discs (and Bunkai Jutsu Vol.1) are a must. Even if you don't want to take the drills shown here 'as is' there is more than enough food for thought to enable you to create your own." - Lee Richardson

"With his latest DVD's The Pinan / Heian Series:The Complete Fighting System, Iain Abernethy continues to shut the gap between "form and function" within traditional kata practice. Not only are the techniques shown highly effective, but as clearly demonstrated they are also in line with the kata's key principles. Add to that Iain's extensive knowledge on the history of the kata's and their founder Anko Itosu, and you have an extremely informative piece of work which I would recommend to any karateka serious about their art" - Andy Shipton

Review by Michael Rosenbaum:

Iain has done a marvelous job with the presentation, writing and production of these new DVDs. The manner in which Iain presents the kata as a continuous stream of knowledge that intensifies with each Pinan is very clever and nicely done. It makes each kata part of a holistic process, which over the course of time, the karate-ka absorbs more and more of. Similarly Iain’s presentation of the kata as drills breaths life into the Pinan series and returns them to the rightful function as combative paradigms.

I found Iain’s solo execution of kata very impressive, but more importantly his presentation of Bunkai was more inline with street fighting than the ascetics so commonly associated with kata performance. In fact Iain’s explanations and execution of techniques conveyed the awkwardness of a real fight. For example, Iain’s using of the whole arm to smash and bash with is a very common occurrence when things turn bad. Likewise there were no techniques based upon a 5 or 6 step process, all were pragmatic, precise and to the point. In short what he has done is made Okinawan karate out to be the formalized system of street fighting that it really is.

Iain’s discussions on the four step process of kata and the Pinan’s history was very informative and added much to the DVD. In fact, I’d liked to have heard more. I do, however, have two complaints neither of which is very significant. The first is the black background helps illuminate Iain and his opponents, but during some of the long shots they both faded into the background. The gym atmosphere on previous DVDs was much more to my liking. The second complaint I have is that Iain’s presentation of using kata principles against weapons was a welcome departure from the old ‘empty-handed only fighting routine,’ but there wasn’t enough of it. I found myself saying “more, more, and more”. Perhaps someday he’ll consider doing a series on that subject alone.

Overall I’d recommend these DVD to anyone interested in legitimate bunkai application and the practice kata. – Michael Rosenbaum

The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System: Volume 1

Shodan, Nidan & Sandan

Pinan Drills 1This DVD series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of two-person drills for the Pinan / Heian series that will enable karateka – of all styles and levels of experience – to return practical combat skills to the heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.

Volume 1 shows the two-person drills associated with the first three of the Pinan / Heian series (Shodan, Nidan and Sandan). Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. This includes striking, breaking balance, controlling limbs, takedowns, a variety of locks and cranks, grappling and throws. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion of the background and history of the Pinan / Heian series.

Iain Abernethy is one of the world’s leading exponents of kata application and practical karate. He has been invited all over the globe to teach his approach and to help people return to the original combative nature of the traditional martial arts.

Volume 2 shows the two-person drills associated with the final two Pinan / Heian kata (Yodan and Godan). 3 - Karate is Easy: Applied Karate Out-Takes (Quite Funny!)

This clip always makes me giggle so I decided to put it on the blog so you could have a giggle too! It is made up of outtakes from the Applied Karate DVDs. During the filming we were interrupted by airplanes, cars, postal workers, cyclists and a whole host of other stuff too. 4 - Coming Soon: Extreme Impact with Iain Abernethy & Steve Williams

eXtreme Impact"I fall to the floor. I’m breathing so hard that my lungs feel like they are about to burst. I look down at my broken body. I can hear nothing but the sound of my pounding heart. I have a splitting headache as my brain screams for oxygen. My muscles are so exhausted that my body can no longer move. So it doesn’t. Mentally and physically I have nothing left. This is hell. And then it starts; like it always does: “Get up! Get a grip of yourself and get on your feet!” The inner voice. My will. My sprit. It’s the one thing that will never lie down and die. So I get to my feet and I do it all again. This is how I train. This is INTENSITY."

In the last newsletter I told you that Steve Williams and I were working on a project called "Extreme Impact". Extreme Impact is a training system that reflects the drills that myself and Steve use to develop power, technique, anaerobic fitness, speed and explosiveness. We recently filmed five units which cover drills to develop all aspects of the following techniques:

  • Extreme Impact Unit 1 - Developing a Knockout Jab!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 2 - The Cross: The Ultimate Knockout Shot!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 3 - Roundhouse: The King of Kicks!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 4 - Front and Side Kicks: Straight Down the Line!

  • Extreme Impact Unit 5 - Strength & Plyometric Drills: Not for the Fainthearted!

These units will available exclusively as downloads in coming weeks. All five of these units have been filmed and they are currently being edited together. Both Steve and I are looking forward to launching this training system. If you are a martial artist who wants to train in a way that will separate you from the crowd, I think this training system will be great interest to you. Regardless of whether you are a "traditionalist" like myself, or a "modernist" like Steve. Please watch this space for details as things develop!

An extension of me…..not a sport

I was born with this inside me

A force beyond normality

A power beyond belief

Hard work, dedication

Commitment, belief

Attitude coupled with talent?

A blessing, a gift, a curse?

Training is me, I am nothing without it

My body feeds from it, my life revolves round it

The drive is overwhelming….

Training….It’s personal!!

Bunkai-Jutsu 1Bunkai-Jutsu: Practical Kata Applications Volume 1 - The Pinan / Heian Series (Download)

Bunkai-Jutsu is the analysis of the karate katas (forms) and their application in real combat. The fighting applications of the katas is one of the most fascinating and sadly misunderstood aspects of karate practice.

Volume 1 covers the applications of the Pinan / Heian (peaceful mind) series. The great Anko Itsou formulated these katas in the early 1900s. They are a complete system of fighting in their own right and were designed to be a collection of the most effective methods being practised in the Shuri region of Okinawa at that time.

This download examines the strikes, locks, throws, chokes, strangles, traps, ground-fighting and combative strategies recorded within the Pinan / Heian series.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + No Shipping Costs)

Important Notes for Downloads: It is strongly recommended that all customers purchasing downloads have a good quality broadband internet connection due to the large file size. Whilst we have done all we can to minimize file size, even with a broadband internet connection, downloads may take a little while and patience is required.

You must also ensure that your computer has sufficient RAM to play a file of this size prior to purchase. Insufficient RAM will result in the download stalling and freezing during playback. Such playback difficulties are not the fault of the download, but the limitations of the computer in question.

No refunds can be given for downloads once the download link has been sent.

All downloads contain anti-piracy warnings and anti-piracy features. Your purchase of this of a download is taken as a guarantee that you understand unauthorised distribution of your download is a crime for which you can be personally prosecuted.

10 - Society of Applied Traditional Martial Arts Update

SATMAThis is just a quick note to update you about the progress of SATMA (the Society of Applied Traditional Martial Arts). The number of people who have registered interest is now way in excess of what we anticipated and we should have a strong number of founder members with which to hit the ground running.

We are a little further behind that we hoped to be with regards to getting everything in place. The paperwork for the grade recognition side of things is complete and all the associated membership books are likewise completed. We are finalising the design of the certificates. All the membership forms have been designed and the associated databases have been constructed. We also have things in place for the newsletter list by which we can all share information and the SATMA forum. The main piece of work at the moment is finalising the SATMA constitution. We then need to get the remaining items off to the printers so we are ready to launch.

As I say, we had hoped to be further along that we currently are. However, I feel it is very important we take the time to ensure everything is place before launching. I do appreciate everyone’s patience and all going well you won’t have too much longer to wait.

If you’d like to be added to the email list in order to receive direct information, please email us at

Instructor Lineup

We are very pleased to announce that we have two of the U.K’s foremost martial artists for the course, being Dave Hazard and Russell Stutely. Both Peter Consterdine and Geoff Thompson will be instructing assisted by a line-up of the top coaches of the BCA.

Dave Hazard
: A 7th Dan in Karate with a worldwide reputation, Dave is acknowledged as one of the great technicians of the Karate world, but with a fierce fighting reputation and a karateka acknowledged by all top Japanese masters as one of the very best UK practitioners.

Dave started his Karate career in 1969 training with Sensei Eneoda, Kase, Shirai, Kawasoe and Masatoshi within the K.U.G.B as well as Nakayama. A graduate of the infamous JKA ‘Instructor’s Class’. Few foreigners survive the rigours of this course which is acknowledged as some of the hardest Karate training in the world, attendance being only by invitation.

Russell Stutely: Acknowledged as Europe’s Number 1 Pressure Point Expert, Russell has revolutionized the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pressure point techniques with the traditional martial arts.

What Russell has done with his art is to open the door for all martial artists, from whatever discipline, to massively enhance their effectiveness through pressure point applications. Boxing, grappling and, in fact, any punching and kicking systems stand to be improved with these remarkable techniques.

What Russell can give you is the ‘magic bullet’ you’ve always been looking for - it’s like having a genuine ‘Vulcan Death Grip’ These techniques are real ‘force multipliers’.

Peter and GeoffPeter Consterdine & Geoff Thompson: Hopefully, we don’t need too much of an introduction, however both Geoff and I recognize that people expect our usual high level input to the course and they won't be disappointed. This is an opportunity that we both look forward to, for us to get in front of our BCA and non-BCA people on the course and inspire and motivate as well as instruct.

If you read the testimonials on the BCA website you will get a real feel for the friendliness you can expect and the openness displayed by all the instructors. Everyone is made to feel welcome and this is a course where no-one will expect you to be bowing and scraping but where we are simply ‘first amongst equals’. Whether you want to learn to ‘hit like a train’, or be motivated to actually change your life, you will get this from Geoff and myself.

Geoff and I will have presentations on various subjects in the evening Lecture Theatre sessions and are always on hand to answer your questions and help with your techniques.

BCA Coaches: We always ensure that the instructor to student ratio is high and throughout the weekend you will also have some of the U.K.s foremost combat coaches. You should, hopefully be familiar with our instructor cadre.

The support line-up includes; Iain Abernethy • John Skillen • Alan Peasland • Peter Lakin.

In their own right these are some of the most sought after seminar instructors both in the U.K and Internationally. They are some of the BCA’s frontline people and you will have numerous opportunities to pick their brains and plug into their unique skills.

The course will be held Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November and will include ALL accommodation, meals and training. Lilleshall is one of the finest sports training venues in the U.K.
