New Podcast: Street-Fighting?

Street-Fighting?Welcome to the latest IainAbernethy.com newsletter! It’s been a little while since the last one so lots to tell you about!

The first thing is that we have a new podcast called “Street Fighting?” In it I explore what the term actually means, the connotations it can have, and the confusion and dangerous thinking that can result. The podcast looks at the vital differences between “street fighting” and “self-protection” and explores the why fighting skills are not what is needed to deal with criminal violence. See Section 1 for more information.

The second section of this newsletter gives details of the new weekly online newspaper we’ve set up called “Practical Karate Weekly”! It’s been running for around 1 month now and is off to a great start! The newspaper contains videos and articles from many great sources and I’m sure you will enjoy it. Please read that section for details of how you can ensure you don’t miss future issues.

Section 4 has details of some new online videos and Section 7 has details of how you can get on the waiting list for our residential courses. We also have news on lots of books, downloads and events that are you are going to want to check out!

1 - New Podcast - Street Fighting?

Street-Fighting?In this podcast we look at Street Fighting! In particular, I explore what the term actually means, the connotations it can have, and the confusion and dangerous thinking that can result. The podcast looks at the vital differences between “street fighting” and “self-protection” and explores the why fighting skills are not what is needed to deal with criminal violence.

The podcast highlights and explores the key three problems with “street fighting”, why neither you nor the criminal wants a fight, vital legal considerations, and why most martial artists as blind to what truly works when things get physical.

We also have the usual quick round up of news and some new theme music! Thank you for your support of these podcasts, and in particular a huge thanks to all of you who keep telling your friends and training partners about them! There would be no podcasts without your support!

I hope you enjoy this latest offering and I’ll be back with more soon!

3 - Bonus Podcast - Iain interviewed by MartialPreneur TV

martialpreneur-tvThis is not the latest iainabernety.com podcast, but a “bonus podcast” of my recent interview with MartialPreneur TV! It’s just over 50 minutes long and looks at my experiences as fulltime martial artist. In the podcast I am asked about how I came to be a full time martial artist, what lessons I have learnt along the way, what is my advice for those who similarly want to commit to the martial lifestyle, my advice for those looking to publish books and DVDs, and quite a bit more too. I really enjoyed chatting with Scott and I think that comes across. I hope you the podcast! I’ll be back with the next iainabernethy.com podcast very soon; which is on the subject of “street fighting” :-)

Listen to the podcast and download it here: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/bonus-podcast-iain-interviewed-martialpreneur-tv

MartialPreneur TV Blurb: “This week’s special guest is Iain Abernethy. Iain is best known for his work on the practical application of karate and kata bunkai or application of the moves within kata for real combat. He has been a published author and has produced many books and training DVD’s. He also produces and hosts a successful podcast which I like to listen to regularly which spurred me to ask him to come onto the show. Iain produced a podcast episode in which he called “money and the martial arts” which I think every martial preneur should listen to. In our martial preneur tv episode I expand upon that podcast Iain did and also ask Iain to guide us on how he went from an electrician to full time instructor and published author. This episode is a real cracker and is absolute fried gold for anyone wishing to pursue a career as a full time teacher in the martial arts.”

4 - New Online Videos: Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan Bunkai; Basic Ground Escape Linework Drill; Iain's 400ft Bungee Jump, etc

Since the last newsletter four new videos have been added to the website!

Naihanchi / Tekki-Shodan Bunkai (video)

This video was filmed at a weekend seminar I taught in Kansas in September 2013. This clip looks at the application of the “lower block, punch, step across, block” sequence.

This short clip is taken from a full weekend of training and viewers should be aware of that. The applications shown are part of a much larger methodology and the nature of this short clip obviously means the overall context cannot be communicated.

If you’d like to learn more, please attend a seminar or see my DVDs / Downloads which are available form the shopping side of iainabernethy.com. “Beyond Bunkai: A Holistic Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan Close-Range Flow Drill” would be the DVD / Download to view in this case.

http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/naihanchi-tekki-shodan-bunkai-video

Basic Ground Escapes Line Drill (video)

This video was filmed at a weekend seminar I taught in Denmark in September 2013.

In “Karate-Do: My Way of Life” Gichin Funakoshi (“The Father of Modern Karate”) talks about the Tegumi grappling drills of his youth. He discusses how this native Okinawan grappling art has influenced karate and how Tegumi drills are beneficial for the karateka.

One drill described by Funakoshi is being held down by one or more opponents while the person doing the drill tries to wrestle their way back to their feet. Escaping from holds / regaining the feet is obviously an important drill for self-protection and I agree with Funakoshi that such drills should be part of training: just as it was in Funakoshi’s youth.

This is a basic “line work” drill to practise escapes from underneath the enemy.

MartialPreneur TV interview Iain (video)

My video interview with MartialPreneur TV is live! It’s just over 50 minutes long and looks at my experiences as fulltime martial artist and gives advice for those who similarly want to commit to the martial lifestyle. I really enjoyed chatting with Scott and I think that comes across on the video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :-)

Iain’s 400ft bungee jump (video)

Nothing at all to do with applied martial arts, self-protection or kata! This is footage from my bungee jump in Chepstow, UK on the 17th of August 2013.

At 400ft, this is the highest bungee jump in the UK ... and it was great fun! A highly recommended experience.

8 - Ramblings from a Ten Foot Square Hut: Reflections After 50 Years in the Martial Arts (Bunkai Book Review)

Iain Abernethy Review

“In the interests of full disclosure: The author was kind enough to send me a copy of this book. I have, however, never communicated with the author at the time of writing this. I’ve never met Christopher Clarke and I was sent a copy because my own work is critiqued in the book. Obviously, I was keen to see what was written about me, so I dived straight in. I got nothing else done that day! The author’s knowledge and passion for bunkai makes this book an enjoyable and informative page-turner.

What I really liked about the book is that it draws together many sources from the past and present. Unlike any book I’ve read on kata application before, this book not only brings together information from the past, it also looks at many of the contemporary approaches to bunkai and their proponents. I was honoured to feature in this, and just in case you think this is a bit of “mutual back slapping”, let me assure you the author’s critique of my work is not without criticism. The reason I’ve written this review is because it’s a great book which has much to add to the modern conversation around bunkai.

The book is concise without being shallow; a difficult thing to pull off. Every page has valuable information and the author does a great job of guiding the reader through it all. The author also manages to strike the balance between giving his own views on the source material, and yet never letting his views obscure the nature of that material.

It truly is a superb read which is very information rich. This is a book that all karateka with an interest in kata application need to read. In a word: Excellent!” – Iain Abernethy

Book Description

What is a "martial art"? Are we practicing an “art,” which by definition is a means of self-expression without the need for any practical application or self-justification? Or are we practicing a “martial” discipline, something that requires effective training in combative technique, that prepares us to defend ourselves, perhaps even to take another person’s life or lose our own in self-defense or in the effort to defend our loved ones or our principles? What relationship does our “modern” “martial art” bear to the old samurai way of life, the way of Bushido, the way of the warrior? What should we expect of our "martial arts"--and of ourselves? Related to this, how did we get from the highly practical original Okinawan “te” to the often stylized, unrealistic, and competitive "karatedo" we practice today? Does our modern karatedo provide realistic methods for confronting the kinds of self-defense and combative situations we face in the 21st century? If not, did something get lost in the transmission from the 17th and 18th century to the 21st? The popularization of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) since the 1990s has reinforced this dilemma for practitioners of such “classical” martial arts as karatedo. Why do our traditional methods not prepare us for grappling or fighting from the floor? Why did classical karate practitioners keep losing to grapplers? Do we need to drop our traditional karatedo and take up MMA to find an effective self-defense or fighting system for the 21st century? These questions bedevil those of us who love and cling to our "traditional" martial arts. This books carefully examines how we arrived at this situation, how various experts have thought about it and attempted to find answers to our dilemma, and provides a sensible, workable set of principles that show that traditional martial arts are not obsolete, that they contain a wide range of effective combative strategies, tactics, and techniques that are just as usable today as they were when they were assembled into "kata", or forms for helping the student remember and practice realistic self-defense and combat while alone. For those wrestling with how to make their karate "work," this is a must-have book. Don't flounder or lose faith. And don't ignore the problem. Buy this book and start to discover your own answers to how to make your karate effective.

10 - Perspectives by Elaine Johnston

You have got to understand what you do when your training. Understanding is an acknowledgement of resolution. What I mean by this is, if you are just going through the motions because everyone else is’ you’re not fully immersing yourself into the learning aspect and the personalisation of your art. Acknowledgement resolves your need for understanding so when you have accomplished this you can practise techniques with more purpose and intensity. When you have understood why you do what you do with conviction, you can inject enough intention into it to make it feel more realistic, giving it more self expression. The more confident you become with your techniques the more likely you are to be expressive. To me this is like making big bold movements with character, drama, controlled aggression and intention. Doing things like this has improved my level of proficiency.

11 - Iain Abernethy Instructors Course in Germany

Can everyone based in Germany and nearby countries who is interested in doing my introductory instructors course please drop me an email at iain@iainabernethy.com There are a number of people in Germany and surrounding countries who are very familiar with my methods so it makes sense to organise a course on German soil. I will make a list of interested parties and work from there. The course will be held in the Stutgart area (in 2014), and the exact date will be organised, as far as possible, around the attendees. This course is aimed at existing black belts who are regulars at my seminars in Germany. Please let me know if you have any questions. Speak soon!

PS I'm looking to sort out a UK one soon too - watch this space! :-)

12 - Dojo Dairy.Com

Message from Dojo Diary:

If you run a dojo (any style) that welcomes visitors, here's a website you have to know about! The concept is pretty simple, create a world-wide directory of karate clubs that the travelling karateka can visit to find a club in the city they are going to, connect by email (or phone) and get permission to train, turn up and join in!

You'll find a growing list of dojos that welcome visitors at: www.dojodiary.com

On the other side of that coin, if you would like to find a review of the training at a club in the city you're going to, then they've got that covered too!

But it's more than that. Much more. There's a growing roster of bloggers, Sensei profiles, a free newsletter, reviews of courses, gis and gear, books and DVDs, and many videos (instructional and/or entertaining) to view.

Run by a karateka for karateka this site is a labour of love. There are no membership fees or any other costs whatsoever. There are some interesting and sometimes controversial blogs (one comes to mind that addressed the impact of MMA on traditional dojos) carried by Steve (some written by him) so take a minute and check it out. The address once again is
www.dojodiary.com

13 - "Ignorance, Myth and Martial Arts" by Wallace Smedley (Update)

Message from Wallace Smedley:

I would like to say thank you very much to those of you who ordered my book! I hope you find it to be both useful and an entertaining read. Feel free to contact me anytime with follow up questions or further discussion! I love hearing from readers! For any who missed it and want to order, it can be found at

Blurb: Within the martial arts a person will find outrageous claims, and subtle lies. There are tales of ancient masters who had powers usually reserved for Superman or Santa Clause, but there are also instructors who use misleading marketing tactics to entice students to pay to be safe. Few instructors actually tell students that the best way to be safe is to be nice to people and not act like a raving ding-dong anytime someone rubs you the wrong way. One will also find absurd practices and a near brainwashing process where you surrender your critical thinking in favor of herd mentality. It is easy to not question the instructor, or the proceedures and policies of the class and organization. There is a much more difficult road in questioning, but questions must be asked.

Wallace Smedley has trained in the martial arts since the early 1980’s. He has traveled the path of esoteric and mystical martial arts, spent a few years wandering the musky halls of a McDojo, and trained in very rough self-defense schools. He uses his experience to give the reader an enjoyable and thought provoking book. Plain hard facts, statistical based points, and stories from his many and varied experiences give the reader much to consider, and re-examine

15 - Kendal Judo Club: Mats for Sale

My good friends at Kendal Judo Club have some mats they are looking to sell. I’ve been slammed into those mats and I can personally attest to their quality :-) The have 54 green and 28 red. They are 40mm X 1 meter X 2 meters and are being offered at £50 each. Ideally they would like the buyer to collect, but delivery is possible depending on the distance and amount bought. To purchase, please contact “Nick” on 07980638609 or nick.hill@edenmortgages.co.uk

16 - Ryujin Karate WCA Syllabus Approval

Congratulations to Ben Hollins and Ryujin Karate for attaining WCA approval for their syllabus! It’s a very strong syllabus that holistically blends traditional kata and modern world self-protection.

Ryujin Karate was formed in 2008 in Okotoks, Alberta. Ben Hollins started Wado Training in the UK in 1990 under Sensei Andrew Dare and Barry Wilkinson. At Ryujin Students learn Wado Kai Fundamentals, and Tony Blauer’s Personal Defense Readiness Programme. Ben has been a Police Officer for 18 years and currently works with the Officer Safety and Tactics Training Unit for Calgary Police. Ben is a Certified Blauer SPEAR instructor for Law Enforcement and PDR Coach.

Ben has qualifications with the Force Science Institute, a certified instructor with PPCT and Certified instructor with Verbal Judo Canada. He is also qualified to instruct and teach using Simunition training aids, and certified through Calgary Police to run scenario based training. Students at Ryujin get the full package, reality is front and foremost however the building blocks of traditional karate still remain as the fundamental foundation.

During classes students learn how to apply self-defence within the Canadian law, tactical communication and threat awareness and avoidance. The goal at Ryujin is to have fun, get fit and be able to WIN any unexpected confrontation. Website www.ryujinkarate.org

17 - Get Involved in Geoff Thompson's New Feature Film!

Geoff Thompson has decided to launch his new feature film, Volatile, based on a story from his best selling book, Watch My Back, using kickstarter and he wants everyone to be involved.

In order to create the powerful, beautiful creative film Geoff and his team want to, he has decided to take a step outside of the industry norm and fund the film himself. This means Geoff and his the crew can do all of the things that they need and want to make the film amazing without the restrictions and changes that can quite often be put on you when a normal production company is funding the film.

We will be using a website called kickstarter.
