VIDEO 1: Seienchin (Seiyunchin) Bunkai

This video looks at bunkai for the opening sequence of Seienchin (Seiyunchin) kata. It was filmed during a four day residential course in the UK. Seienchin (Seiyunchin) is not a kata that is part of my personal practise or teaching, but I believe that the principles of combat and kata transcend individual kata. We therefore applied the process of analysis to the kata and this is what we feel the kata is showing. I obviously defer to those who have studied the kata in the depth it deserves, but I nevertheless hope that our take on the sequence is of interest.

VIDEO 2: Two-Person Passai / Bassai-Dai Drill

This short video was filmed at a seminar in Kansas in June 2014. It shows a two-person drill for all the primary applications of Bassai-Dai / Passai; in the order they are presented by the kata. The purpose of such a drill is to permit time efficient practise of the bunkai and to give a direct two-person complement to the solo form of the kata. Such drills are a small part of the overall methodology however; and they are certainly not a substitute for the practise of individual techniques in complaint and non-compliant drills.

The drill shown took two days to teach to a group of experienced karateka and this short clip can in no way capture all the details or give a full explanation. This should therefore not be mistaken to be an instructional clip. It should also be accepted that all the nuances of the drill may be unclear to viewers who were not there. We nevertheless hope that the clip is of interest.

VIDEO 3: Gojushiho Bunkai: Multiple Nukite Sequence

In this video we look at bunkai for the multiple nukite sequence found in Gojushiho. There are a number of differing versions of this kata. The suffixes sometimes used also vary from group to group i.e. what some label as “dai” others label as “sho” (and vice-versa). This sequence should be recognisable to all those who practise the kata through; regardless of style or preferred suffix.

This sequence contains a number of potentially dangerous techniques and hence it should only be practised under the close observation of a suitably qualified and experienced instructor.

The sequence also contains a number of options to be used if a technique does not work as planned. As a general point, it should be understood that kata contain both combinations (i.e. do this AND this) and options (i.e. do this OR this). This sequence contains both “AND”s and “OR”s and hence is a good illustration of that concept.
