Hi All,
Welcome to the latest newsletter! An especially warm welcome to all the new
members! It’s good to have you join us!
The first thing is that a new podcast called “Money and the Martial Arts” has
just been added to the website and iTunes! This new podcast looks at the ever
controversial topic of money in the martial arts, and includes our first ever
musical section! You can find more details in section one.
I’ve also uploaded quite bit of video footage since the last newsletter! If you
check out section two you can find a link to a single webpage where you can view
all 30 minutes. The videos cover the bunkai of the “u-punch”, advanced drills
for Pinan / Heian Yodan and Godan, leg-trap takedowns, pad-drills for hip
movement, and more.
The newsletter also includes an updated seminar list for the next few months.
One upcoming event that is sure to be of interest is the first “Bunkai Bash”
which sees many of the UK’s pragmatically focused traditionalists meet to swap
ideas and have some fun. Everyone teaching is well known to me and I this is
sure to be lots of fun! I’m really looking forward to it! Check out section 3
for more details!
The 7th of July sees my first ever UK seminar on the applications of Wanshu /
Enpi and Neiseishi / Nijushiho. This newsletter also has information on my joint
seminar with Kris Wilder later in the year!

1 - New Podcast: Money and the
Martial Arts!
This
new podcast looks at the ever controversial topic of money and the martial arts.
In the podcast I share my views on whether it is right to take payment for
martial arts instruction; what amounts to unethical behaviour; the different
attitudes that exist to money; how people can unwittingly help unethical
instructors; how to most effectively combat money hungry “McDojos”; how money
can effect the teacher / student relationship; how money can further good
quality martial arts; and more besides!
This podcast also includes the usual news and our first ever musical section!
Towards the end of the podcast we have (in full and with permission) the
brilliant song “Dojo Blues” by The Aspiring Legends! It’s a brilliant song that
all martial artists will be able to relate to, and once it gets into your head
it will be there for days!
I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with move soon!
All the best,
Iain

7 - Heian / Pinan Kata Bunkai The Fundamentals by Lee Taylor Update
Lee
Taylor's first book - ‘Heian Pinan Kata & Bunkai The Fundamentals is now
available in print and digital formats from Lulu and Amazon.
"Can I take this opportunity to thank those people who took the time to purchase
my book, and those who have given me great feedback about it, I truly am humbled
from peoples’ generosity and support. The original intention of the book was for
my students to have a reference point for their kata and bunkai training, but it
has been well received in and out of the karate fraternity, so many thanks." -
Lee Taylor

Here are some reviews about the book:
"In Heian / Pinan Kata & Bunkai, Lee Taylor has used photographs to provide an
illustrated step-by-step demonstration of the five main Heian / Pinan Kata (Shodan,
Nidan, Sandan, Yodan and Godan). The book also provides alternative suggestions
for finishing moves and a brief, but informative history on the evolution of
kata. This book is a great aid for students who want to sharpen up their kata
away from the dojo" - Andy Higgson, Martial Arts Illustrated
This is NOT your standard kata book showing just the moves and maybe a few
unrealistic applications that would only work against another trained martial
artist attacking with pre-arranged martial arts techniques...Lee's excellent
pragmatic book demonstrates realistic and workable techniques that can be used
as they were originally intended - in a civilian self-defence scenario against
an opponent that is not compliant or has martial arts knowledge. Highly
recommended!" - Karate_Lofty, 14 Mar 2013
“A few days ago I received a phone call from Lee Taylor. Apart from us swapping
a few emails, this was the first time we chatted together and it was evident
after the first five minutes (the call then went on for almost an hour) that we
had a great deal in common with regards to our approach to karate. I mentioned
to Lee that I was looking to start conducting some product reviews as part of my
website developments and asked whether he would like his new book entitled
'Heian/Pinan Kata & Bunkai: The Fundamentals' to be one of the first. A couple
of days later, I received through the post a copy of the book from Lee with a
cover note inviting my honest review and opinion. So here goes...
During an initial flick through the pages, which is something I always do when I
get my hands on a new book, it became quickly evident that this book is well
structured, presented and formatted. Heavily illustrated, the pictures are
large, clear and relevant. The cover art certainly catches your attention plus
the size, text and fonts give the text a 'manual' feel that can be used in the
dojo alongside your training with enough space around the pages to scroll some
relevant notes and comments should one see fit to do so.
The short foreword for the book was written by Iain Abernethy, who is of course
globally well-known for his work in the 'kata bunkai' field. It becomes clear
from the start that Lee has taken great influence from Iain's approach since
apart from a small number of alterations to suit his own style of kata, the vast
majority of applications demonstrated within the pages are the same as those
given in Iain's 'Pinan/Heian Kata: The Complete Fighting System' DVD’s. I know
that Lee has trained with Iain in the past, having also been awarded an
instructors certificate by him, so I would consider him more than suitably
qualified to present his own take on these applications. In my view, he achieves
this very well.
The book starts off with a concise introduction that talks about the basis of
the Pinan/Heian forms, how they are constructed, sequenced and ordered. Lee also
discusses the need to understand 'context' when practicing karate and his views
on correct application for civilian self-protection.
The remainder of the book then looks at each of the five Pinan/Heian kata in
turn, covering the solo choreography followed by a number of bunkai sequenced to
match the kata movements. Intertwined between these are a selection of quotes
from past masters that help to support the notion that the comprehensive study
of kata has traditionally been the main focal point of karate training. Many of
these quotes are by Kenwa Mabuni (the founder of Shito-Ryu karate), who was
himself regarded to be a very knowledgeable master with respect to kata analysis
and had extensive exposure to the training practices of both the Shuri and Naha
lineages.
In summary, this book is straight to the point, easy to follow, well written
without ambiguity and clearly formatted. It provides a selection of practical
applications for the Pinan/Heian kata series that combine together with
progressive and integrated themes for the prime objective of physical
self-protection. Since Lee's views are very similar to those of my own, it was
an enjoyable read and I noticed numerous times that my head was uncontrollably
nodding in agreement with many of the points discussed
All in all, I would certainly recommend this book to sit on the shelves of all
pragmatically minded karate practitioners - preferably well read and dog eared!”
– Chris Denwood
8 - The Spirit of the Sword by Nakamura Taisaburo (translated by Gavin J.
Poffley)
“It’s
been a long time since I formally studied swordsmanship, but it is nevertheless
a topic which I find fascinating. This is a great book which I feel should be
part of every martial artist’s library! A great read!” – Iain Abernethy
Nakamura Taisaburo's landmark book on the art of the sword includes technical
information, thoughtful analysis, and fascinating recollections of his own
training and teaching. One of the most famous Japanese swordsmen of the
twentieth century, Nakamura sensei is widely acknowledged as the preeminent
reinvigorator of the practice of tameshigiri (test cutting) as a test of
technical and spiritual mastery. The Spirit of the Sword--first published in
Japanese in 1980, now translated into English for the first time--is regarded by
many as the most complete of Nakamura's writings on Japanese swordsmanship. Here
Nakamura instructs the reader on the integration of iaido, kendo, and
tameshigiri; the correct mental approach to sword practice; training methods;
numerous kata or forms; a guide to sword maintenance; and historical notes on
the use of the sword as a weapon. Illustrated with over 800 original
photographs, this book is a must-have for any student of the Japanese sword and
an excellent resource for sword enthusiasts in general.
About the Author

the Nakamura-ryu style of sword arts. He was the chief instructor of the
All-Japan Toyama-ryu Iaido Federation and the head of the All-Japan Battojutsu
Federation. He held a 9th-dan rank in Battojutsu and Iaido as well as an 8th-dan
rank in Jukendo and a 7th-dan rank in Kendo.
Gavin J. Poffley has a master's degree in Japanese translation from the School
of Oriental and African Studies and has also studied at Tokyo University of
Foreign Studies and Hiroshima University, writing dissertations on the
modernization of Japan's martial arts and the history of Okinawan karate. He has
dan ranks in Shorin-ryu and Goju-ryu karate and aiki-jujutsu as well as
experience in many other systems. Gavin currently resides in East London with

11 - Stop Bullies Now
The
Stop Bullies Now video workshop has been developed from the Team Black Belt
Anti-Bulling workshops which we utilise for our own students and external
clients.
The video is aimed directly at school children and encourages the planning and
practice of both “soft skills” such as improving a child’s body language,
through to “hard skills” such as diversion and evasion strategies and on to
dealing with direct physical confrontation and escape.
The Video workshop would be an excellent foundation for any Martial Artist
wishing to run an Anti-Bullying programme in their school, we also run an

12 - Shoot Wrestling Canada
Shoot Wrestling
Canada is celebrating 35 years! We have grown into a national coaching
association for both Martial Arts and Law Enforcement. I would like to reach out
to the UK.
Highlights of
the Shoot Wrestling Canada program are ,
Sport Specific
drills and games, for example developing throws:
“Up Root the
Tree” in 3 skill levels. 3 x 3minute rounds
Level 1) I try
to get you in a bear hug and lift you off the ground, you do the same.
Level 2) I can
use the bear hug and a “designated “throw you continue at level 1.
Level 3) I can
use random throws, you continue to up root the tree.
Chain Wrestling:
A continuous looping motion , escape the hold , reverse it put it back on your
partner. and a loop is created! There are examples on web site i.e. "chase the
arm bar", chain wrestling drills for triangles leg locks etc.
Shoot Wrestling
Series : submission holds flowing from one to another using the action reaction
formula. Upper Body 1: uses large resistance. Upper Body 2: uses small
resistance. Upper Body 3: combine large and small resistance
I have authored
5 books and 3 training manuals and have references. My goals are to create a UK
branch through our coaching certification programs.
I would like to
teach via skype and personal seminars.

14 - Jion Seminar Series with Mark Bonner
On the
31st of August 2013 I will be running an open session on the practical
application of Jion.
The
session is titled ''Narrow and deep (part one)'' and will focus on the Kata from
the opening Yoi to the first double Age Uke-Junzuki.
I will
look to create a holistic series of applications which will solve a set of
predictable responses whilst taking and re-taking the initiative in a close
quarter altercation.
The
session will also include pad drills to enable the practitioner to increase
proficiency at delivering impact with different striking weapons at close
quarters.
As any
technique, or sequence of techniques in Kata can have several applications this
session will be part one of two and will primarily deal with denying the
opponent an avenue back into the confrontation.
Part
two will consider the kata further to deal with a significant loss of advantage
by the Karateka.
The
session will run from 11.00am-3.00pm, the venue is Serbian Orthodox church, Heap
street, Boothtown, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 6JE. The cost of the session is
£10
