New Podcast: Life-Preserving and Life-Enhancing!

Hi All,

Welcome to the latest newsletter! The main bit of news is a new podcast has just been added to the website! Long overdue I know! The good news is that I also have podcasts on Self-Defence Law, and an in-depth discussion with Jamie Clubb (see section 6) lined up and ready to go! I also plan to do the usual Q & A podcast before the end of the year. So, lots of good stuff to come! In the meantime, be sure to enjoy the latest “Life-Preserving and Life-Enhancing” podcast (see section 1).

I’ve also included details of all the open seminars up until the end of March 2018 in this newsletter! 2018 is now pretty much fully booked and 2019 is starting to fill up too. If you’d like me to visit your dojo within the next 18 months, please get in touch ASAP!

The other bit of news I’d like to share in this introduction is that I’ve been promoted to 7th dan karate by Peter Consterdine 9th dan (BCA, BCKA, WCA) and this has been ratified with the EKF (English Karate Federation). I can’t think of anyone more knowledgeable than Peter when it comes to the real-world application of the martial arts; it is therefore a great honour to receive such a rank from him.

This newsletter also contains other news and information that I hope you find interesting and useful. Check out the contents below.

Please also bookmark “Practical Karate Weekly” (https://paper.li/iainabernethy/1376566131#/) and pop along each Wednesday afternoon for the weekly collection of news, articles and videos!

Thanks for the support of these newsletters!

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

1 – New Podcast: Life-Preserving and Life-Enhancing!

New podcast! There are lots of different martial arts and innumerable approaches to them. We all need to find an approach that we enjoy and that will most efficiently help us achieve our objectives.

In my case, I feel any martial art that I am to invest time and effort into must achieve two key things:

It must be both live-preserving and life-enhancing.

I feel any worthwhile martial arts needs to achieve both objectives; one without the other is not enough.

In this podcast, I breakdown what “life-preserving” and “life-enhancing” actually mean to me and hopefully cover a few interesting talking points along the way.

Topics covered include: self-protection, how the martial arts can impact on mental and physical health, longevity in training, common things to avoid, how martial arts can contribute to happiness, maximising training benefits, and loads more! I hope you enjoy it!

3 – New Practical Kata Bunkai Videos!

Two new videos since the last newsletter!

Kushanku-Sho (Kanku-Sho) and Bassai-Sho Bunkai

This video shares bunkai for the rising motion (morote koko gamae) common to Kushanku-Sho (Kanku-Sho) and Bassai-Sho. This is not my bunkai, but that of Norwegian karateka André Pedersen. I was teaching in Norway and chatting with André when he shared these with me. I really liked them and encouraged André to share them. André suggested that I should share them via my channel, so here you are! Thank you André!

Watch here: https://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/kushanku-sho-kanku-sho-and-bassai-sho-bunkai

Placement and Pad Drill

This basic pad drill includes tai-sabaki (body shifting), limb-clearance, a straight palm-heel, a dropping-slap and a rising face kick. Rather than drill such things individually, I believe it is better to drill them in innumerable combinations so they are always viewed in a combative context (it’s more fun too). We begin by practicing the combination on a partner, with control, so we get to practise the placement of the techniques on a human body. We then take the same combination onto the pads so we can practise the methods with impact. Partner drills lack power, and hitting the pads is not the same as striking a person. The two forms of practice therefore complement each other.

5 – Karate Throws Volume 1!

Karate Throws Volume 1 is now available on Download, DVD, and with App Subscription!

“In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and joint-locks are included” – Gichin Funakoshi

This video series looks at the “forgotten” throws that were once commonly practised within karate. The throws of karate can be found throughout the traditional kata and are well documented in the writings of the past masters. This video series will help practical karateka reintroduce this now neglected practise back into karate so it can once again be the holistic art it was originally created to be.

In addition to showing how to perform the throws, this video also shows where the throws can be found in the traditional kata and the writings of the past masters (complete with photos where possible). Additionally, this video also examines the underlying throwing principles encapsulated by the kata examples and shows additional ways in which they can be applied.

This volume looks specifically at the lifting throws which involve lifting the enemy’s feet off the floor. Volumes 2 and 3 (coming soon) will look at throws that trap the leg, and throws which disrupt posture.

Volume 1 now available on:

6 – Self-Protection for Children

"When Parents Arent Around: A Young Person’s Guide to Real Self-Protection" by Jamie Clubb

When Parents Aren’t Around” offers up-to-date and well researched information that is easy to read for 8-13 year old children and their parents. The aim of the book is to teach children basic behavioural skills for self-protection, designed with a proactive approach that switches them onto survival without making them paranoid. It is written so that information can be learnt and retained with a special introduction and a chapter for parents to help in their child’s self-protection education. This book focuses on the soft and hard skills needed to be in place in order for a child to have a better chance to avoid or escape safely from a physical confrontation.

USA: https://www.amazon.com/When-Parents-Arent-Around-Self-Protection-ebook/dp/B076HQYZ27/

REVIEWS:

“At long last a real-world self-protection book for children! This is a million miles away from the collections of impractical “martial arts tricks” that normally masquerade as children’s self-protection. Both parents and children need information that avoids the false confidence of the quick fix, but instead promotes the life skills to correctly perceive and handle threats. This book encourages understanding and using natural instincts, critical thinking, empirical learning, developing communication skills, and understanding self and others. A fantastic book that will genuinely contribute towards a child’s safety and self-confidence.” – Iain Abernethy 7th dan karate

“When Parents Aren't Around' A young person's guide to real self-defence provides comprehensive insights into the world of self-defence, and debunks many myths and misconceptions. It is an excellent resource, which parents and children can use together to learn a range of practical techniques and life skills, which will enhance their confidence and self-esteem. The message that integrating a genuine self-defence framework into a person's life helps to achieve an independent and safer future is a powerful one. I recommend this book as very readable, and one which gives sound advice to parents and young people about how to deal with actual and potentially challenging situations.” – Claude Knight, Director of the Kidscape children’s anti-bullying charity.

"There is so much in this book that will genuinely empower children. What sets Jamie Clubb's approach apart is his emphasis on self-defence as an attitude of mind rather than just a series of physical moves. This book will be of real value to any child who feels bullied or is unsure how to handle other people's aggression. By teaching children how to read threatening situations accurately and cultivating their self-awareness Clubb's methods will help children keep themselves out of danger, as well as giving them the self-assurance and practical skills they need to handle it when they cannot." – Dr Stephen Briers – TV child psychologist on numerous programmes including Little Angels, Teen Angels, The 10 Demandments and author of Superpowers for Parents

10 – Virgin London Marathon in 2018 for The Stroke Association

Marcus is a member of our website and he is running the London Marathon to raise money for The Stroke Association. It would be great if you could lend any support.

Message from Marcus: I am running the Virgin London Marathon in 2018 for Team Stroke, so for the the charity The Stroke Association. This charity is something close to my heart following a number of my family members having suffered from strokes including most recently my mother in 2008.

Some facts about stroke can be found here : https://www.stroke.org.uk/

Strokes really can be devastating for those who suffer them and those who care for them after (mainly the family members).

I know it is a cheek but can I ask if any of you are able to, to consider sponsoring me to help me reach my total of £2000 that I have said I will raise for The Stroke Association in order to help them to help those suffering from the aftermath of a stroke and their families etc. My fundraising page is linked here:

Many thanks

11 – 5th Annual Charity Training Camp

12 - The World Combat Association

Iain’s Introduction To The WCA

The exponential growth in those returning to practicing the martial arts in a practical way means that there is now a pressing need for a global dedicated association so practitioners of applied martial arts can band together for the benefit of both the arts and themselves.

The bodies set up to promote sporting offshoots or a particular style or methodology – as useful as they can be for their members – do little to promote and enhance what we see as an extremely important aspect of the martial arts.

An open and inclusive worldwide association is needed for pragmatic traditionalists and practitioners of functional martial arts. The World Combat Association (WCA) fulfils this need!

Many martial arts bodies have a recurring bad habit of trying to limit the freedom of their members and hence the WCA aims promote and enhance the wide variety of pragmatic approaches without imposing unnecessary limits upon people.

The WCA will wholly dedicated to the promotion and furtherance of applied martial arts. Your standard association will typically deal with things like insurance, providing representatives for competitions etc. That is not the role of the WCA.

The WCA has been set up to be an independent association of likeminded individuals who believe that applied martial arts needs a body to address the specific issues associated with our pragmatic approaches ....
