May 2011 Newsletter: Arm-Lock Principles Podcast & Lots More!
Hi Everyone!
A
warm welcome to May’s newsletter! OK, so I know it’s a couple of days early but
I thought those in the UK may enjoy listening to the podcasts, watching the
videos and reading the newsletter over the long weekend, so I got it done early!
We have a new podcast called “The Principles of Arm-Locks”. Can you guess what
it is about? How did you know?!? That’s right, it is about the principles of
arm-locks! It’s on the website to listen to and download now and should be on
iTunes within a few hours (see section 1).
We also have some videos to tell you about this month. Those in need of a bit of
inspiration and motivation should checkout the videos in section 4 and section
7. Both are “TED Talks” and I recently added them to the site. Both superb and I
hope you enjoy them.
On the more martial side of things, in section 5 we have a great video where
Michael Jai White and Kimbo Slice Discuss Telegraphing Punches. If you’ve not
yet seen it, be sure to watch as it’s really good stuff.
Also lots of training opportunities to let you know about. For those in the UK,
Mike Liptrot and I will be teaching our annual weekend course on the 28th and
29th of this month and please book ASAP if you have not yet done so (section 2).
For those in the USA it is now confirmed that I’ll be teaching for a weekend in
Kansas City, Missouri in October (section 6)! You can now download all the
details and a booking form from the website and it seems people are travelling
from far and wide to attend. Very excited to be teaching for a full weekend in
the USA! The profits from this weekend will go to “karate for life” and you can
find out more about that in section 3. Everyone on Facebook needs to “like”
their page!
Don Came’s Kissaki Method DVD is now available for purchase! It’s a great DVD
and well worth checking out. I’m told some previews etc will be forthcoming too,
but in the meantime you can find all the details in section 9.
The final thing to mention is I need your help in dealing with my out of control
email situation!!! I also want you all to join me on Twitter and Facebook so we
can communicate more directly and efficiently. Have a look in section eight for
details!
I hope you enjoy all the information we have to offer so please check out the
contents list and see what appeals!
All the best,
Iain

1 – New Podcast: Principles of Arm-Locks
Well
here we are with May’s podcast! This month we will be looking at the principles
of arm-locks. The podcast is in two sections. The first section covers some of
the general issues surrounding the role and application of arm-locks. The second
section covers some of the key principles that need to be adhered to if
arm-locks are to be effectively applied.
The
podcast looks at the role of arm-locks in live situations, how arm-locks should
be integrated with other methods, how the principles of arm-locks relate to
kata, and principles vs. techniques. We also examine the key concepts of push /
pull, good leverage, mechanical advantage, continuous control, confusion and
distraction, and the structure and weaknesses of the joints of the arm.
The
podcast also has news of some upcoming events on both side of the Atlantic, my
attempt to find the optimum podcast length, how to keep in touch and I ask for
your help managing my out of control email situation!
One
thing all listeners should be aware of is that the embedded comments / notes for
the podcast contain timings and listings so you can easily fast-forward to the
relevant section on future listens.
I hope you enjoy this podcast and if you listen to the very end you get to hear me swallow an insect live on air! Enjoy!

2 – Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot Course 2011 (28th & 29th May)!
On
the 28th & 29th of May Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot will be teaching a
not-to-be-missed two day martial arts seminar! This is the fifth annual seminar
Iain and Mike have done together. These events have been extremely popular and
we expect this year's event to fill up very quickly.
Once again, this event will take place in the highly impressive Kendal Judo Club Dojo - a recognised Olympic facility - which is in the heart of the Lake District national park.
This seminar is open to all martial artists - regardless of background, style, and current level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations).
Topics covered will include: karate trapping / limb-control drills, practical throws and takedowns, effectively dealing with multiple assailants (drills and theory), developing an effective physical conditioning program, kata application, result and context driven training (“the martial map”), effective groundwork, and a whole host of pragmatic grappling, striking, fighting and self-protection drills and concepts.

Iain Abernethy: Iain has been involved in the martial arts since childhood. Iain holds the rank of 6th Dan with both the British Combat Association and Karate England. One of the leading exponents of applied karate, Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts recorded in the traditional kata. Iain is in great demand on the seminar circuit and has taught in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Ireland and elsewhere. Iain can be contacted on iain@iainabernethy.com or 01900829406
Mike Liptrot: Mike – a full time international judo coach – started judo at the age of six. Mike teaches grappling skills to Judoka, traditional martial artists, self-protection exponents and MMA fighters. Thanks to the massive influence of Tony Macconnell, Mike had a successful competition career. His first International experience was when he was sixteen years old. It was the Dutch Open and for his first contest he had, as his opponent, World and Olympic Champion, the Russian, Nicolai Soloduchin. Mike says he still remembers the left Uchi Mata! One of the UK’s leading grappling coaches, Mike’s teaching is in great demand. Mike also recently produced his first DVD on Judo. Mike can be contacted on mike@mikeliptrot.com or 07708968194

4 - 3 things I learnt as my plane crashed (great 5 min video!)
Here is an interesting 5 minute video that Geoff
Thompson made me aware of via twitter. Well worth a watch and it’s sure to get
you thinking about what is important to you in life. 5 minutes well spent!
Ric Elias had a front-row seat on Flight 1549, the plane that crash-landed in
the Hudson River in New York in January 2009. What went through his mind as the
doomed plane went down? At TED, he tells his story publicly for the first time.

7 - Coach John Wooden explains true success (video)
Here is
a great video (17 mins) that I hope you will all enjoy. John Wooden ("Coach")
explains his definition of success which I feel has some relevance to how we
approach the martial arts and our lives outside the dojo too. I really enjoyed
this one and I hope you do too.
All the
best,
Iain
John Wooden, affectionately known as Coach, led UCLA to record wins that are
still unmatched in the world of basketball. Throughout his long life, he shared
the values and life lessons he passed to his players, emphasizing success that’s
about much more than winning.
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/coach-john-wooden-explains-true-success-video
8 - Twitter, Facebook and too many emails! :-)
I have a little favour to ask. I’m always
simultaneously honoured, humbled and delighted with the level of interest in my
approach to the martial arts. As you know, I do my best share what I do openly
with as many people as possible, and to provide a platform for others to do the
same.
The popularity of the website has meant that I get a lot of emails each day
asking questions and seeking guidance on various issues. I really like getting
such emails and always do my best to give everyone a thorough and timely
response.
The trouble I’ve had over the last few years is that the level of emails has
increased to where spending 4 hours a day (28 hours a week) answering them is
pretty standard. The last six months or so has seen the volume increase yet
further and we are now at a point where the number of emails received is beyond
what I can realistically manage. I therefore have some alternatives to suggest
and a few requests for help and understanding.
I’ve now joined the “social media revolution” – OK, I know I was late to the
party but I’m there now! – and facebook and twitter are proving great and very
efficient ways to keep in touch with everyone.
TWITTER: I love Twitter! Seriously, I think it’s awesome! I really enjoy
it as an information source and a means of fun social interaction. I’ve made
some good friends via Twitter. All the tweets sent to me come directly to my
mobile phone (during UK daytime) so it’s a great way to keep in touch wherever I
happen to be. Any sent to me in UK night time, will be answered the very next
morning. I put updates / links of interest on twitter regularly and I’m pretty
active on it. I can be tweeted @iainabernethy and found here
www.twitter.com/iainabernethy
FACEBOOK: I update on facebook daily and replying to comments is one of
the first things I do each day. Please consider facebook as a means by which we
can talk to one another and swap information on a daily basis:
www.facebook.com/iainabernethy
WEB FORUM: I love the forum on the site and play an active part in as
many discussions as possible. It’s not an “ask Iain” forum so please avoid
direct question to me. It’s not in your interests to do that either because I’ll
still respond to open questions and the other members are an open and very
knowledgeable bunch and hence you’ll get way more out of it than just my own
views. A forum post (as opposed to an email to me) will be better for you as you
are tapping into a greater knowledge source and it is useful to all forum
members and visitors who will gain from reading the discussions too. I’ve learnt
loads from the forum and I’m sure you will to:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/forum
All of the above are better ways to keep contact, to get timely answers to
questions, and to strengthen our little community (of around 7000 :-). Email is
better for some things though and obviously has an important part to play. It
would however help me if it could be used in a more moderate fashion than it is
at the moment.
I never what to be “that guy” who “ignored” your email. However it has become
clear that the volume of email is preventing me from pushing forward other
projects that I feel you will all enjoy.
People are always asking about the books I’m working on, SATMA, the frequency of
Jissen issues, more video on the site, more DVDs on other kata etc., etc. One of
the key things that prevents all those things moving forward as quickly as we
would all like is the many hours spent answering individual emails to me. I
therefore need your help in finding the balance between remaining accessible and
moving important projects forward. If you could consider the following it would
really help me out.
1 – If you have a question for me, never hesitate to email! This is request
is not to be mistaken for me saying, “Don’t email me!” :-) It would however help
greatly if you could consider the following points too.
2 – Please keep all emails succinct and to the point. That makes it much easier
for me to answer.
3 – I will always get back to you as quickly as I can. Please don’t send “can
you please reply to email I sent yesterday” emails. I will get back to you as
soon as I can (normally within 3 or 4 days) and other emails just add to the
overall volume.
4 – Please understand that we need to prioritise emails. The ones relating to
orders, seminars, the website etc are normally answered within 24 hours (by me
or Helen). We prioritise those above all else. General questions on my thoughts
on given issues etc are answered when I have time and hence you may need to wait
a little while longer for an answer.
5 – Most of the time I find myself including a link to an article, podcast,
forum post, etc where I have written on the issue in more depth than is possible
in an email. If you could use the search function on the website first, you may
find the email is not needed; or if it is still needed the extra reading should
help you ask more specific questions which will benefit us both.
If you could consider the above it would really help me. Thanks in advance for
any help you can provide! The hours saved should enable me to bring you all even
more things more often. Thank you for your understanding.
All the best,
Iain
9 - Kissaki-Kai Practical Karate DVD
In
the last few newsletters I've been telling you about a forthcoming DVD by Don
Came 6th dan and UK Kissaki-Kai chief instructor. Well it's now available and I
can tell you it's superb! You can buy it from Amazon.co.uk and I've copied all
the details below. The DVD has great production values (same team who did my
last DVD) and its good close-range no-nonsense stuff. Just the kind of thing I
know you'll all enjoy. Definitely one to add to your collection!
BLURB: The Kissaki Method: Kissaki-Kai is karate returned to its practical and functional roots. It was founded by Vince Morris, 8th dan, in 1993 at the behest of senior black belt students who had become disillusioned with what the "traditional" karate schools had to offer in terms of "real" fighting techniques. It is less a style but more a series of principles guided by Sensei Morris' "Rules of Combat", a groundbreaking analysis of strategies derived from many real world conflicts. Here, UK Chief Instructor Don Came, presents a series of drills following these Rules that you can apply to your own teaching or training, which can also help you unlock the hidden applications of the kata or forms within your own system. Contents include: Flow drills + defences against a series of common methods of assault, including straight and hook punches, combination punches, headbutts, and various grabs seen as a precursor to a strike... all practised from realistic ranges! These can be used to enhance your own lesson plans and be incorporated into any martial system.

11 - Iain Abernethy at Animal List BBQ in Colorado, USA in July
On the 15th, 16th and 17th of July I will be at Marc MacYoung’s annual Animal List Event in Colorado, USA! This is a private event for members of the “Animal List” so it is not open to all. I’ll be doing at little teaching there and I’m looking forward to training, teaching, talking, eating and generally spending time with everyone. Helen will also be with me and she is also excited to be able to meet some of you in person. I also understand that Rory Miller and Kris Wilder will be there too and it will be good to see them in person once again. This promises to be a fun weekend! Looking forward to it!
12 - Iain Abernethy Instructor's Courses (express
your interest)
It’s been a few years now since I last ran an
introductory instructors’ course. Demand has been quite high and hence I’m
looking to finally run one early next year. I’m letting everyone know now
because places will be limited and hence I need to make an interested persons
list as soon as possible. To be eligible for the course you need to fulfil the
following criteria:
All participants must hold a dan grade.
All participants must be a certified instructor with their governing body
All participants must have teaching experience and be actively teaching others
All participants must be over 18 years
All participants must be in good health and have valid insurance
All participants must have had sufficient exposure to Iain's methods (i.e. a
regular at the seminars etc)
If you meet the criteria, and would like to do the course, please send me an
email (iain@iainabernethy.com) and
I’ll keep you in the loop as things progress.
Note: If you are training under one of the small number of instructors to
complete the FULL instructor’s course, please contact them about this. Because
they will be able to help you prepare, I’m planning a special “fast track”
course for the students of existing full instructors later in the year.
13 – Marc "Animal" MacYoung in UK in 2011
Here is your chance to train with Marc MacYoung in September! I’ve been a fan of Marc’s work for decades and it was great when I got to meet him in person last year. He’s a great guy, with a superb teaching style, and his material is as practical as it gets. This is not an opportunity to miss so be sure to contact Mick and let him know you would support this event. Mick Franklin is the organiser you can find all the details below. Be sure to contact him ASAP.
All the best,
Iain
(Left to Right: Nick Yang, Marc MacYoung, Rory Miller, Al Peasland, Iain Abernethy, Kris Wilder)
Message from Mick Franklin:
Greetings,
My name is Mick Franklin, I am a 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate but today I am
writing to you as a representative of Conflict Communications. I wish to make
you aware of our upcoming course on De-escalation. This 1 day course will
be conducted by internationally acclaimed Marc MacYoung, a man who has lived and
worked on the sharp end of life dealing with violent and aggressive people, but
more importantly was able to attain and master the skills to defuse
potentially violent situations, and then successfully pass those skills on to
martial artists, hospital and police staff all around the world.
This course really is one of a kind. Rather than just being an "aggression
management" course you will learn the source of all conflicts and more
importantly what to do about them. The skills you will learn are not just useful
for preventing violent attacks, but will also greatly benefit the way you
interact with people in all situations, including at work and in your personal
relationships. Your martial arts techniques may be superb but can you recognise
when someone really intends to hurt you? Can you defuse a violent individual? Do
you have the skills to explain to the police and courts what steps you took to
avoid it becoming physical, and explain, in a legal sense, why you did what you
had to do?
Course Dates: September the 3rd for De-escalation, September the 4th for the
Body Mechanics in Martial Arts course
Course Costs: £40 for 1 day only, or £70 for both days
Location: Edinburgh
Duration: 8 hours each day
If you would like some further insight in to Mr MacYoung's training you should
begin with his website, I think you will be impressed:
http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/
I have also included a brochure of the De-escalation Course for you below.
If this is something you would like to press ahead with, or if you just have
some questions, then let me know. I am taking note of interest now.
Kind regards,
Mick Franklin
P.S. Marc MacYoung will be running a course on Body Mechanics in Martial Arts on
the day after the De-escalation Course. This course will show you how to
generate more power from your techniques (regardless of your style) and to apply
a critical eye to why a technique works or doesn't work, as well as making
students aware of important elements that are currently missing from the way
bunkai and kata is taught in most schools. I can not say much about it now -keep
an eye on the magazine Martial Arts Illustrated for the first news on this
exciting material in an indepth interview with Mr MacYoung. I can honestly say,
however, that despite my 10 years of full contact Kyokushin Karate I have
learned a lot from Marc in a very short time about good technique and generating
power.

Marc MacYoung is a highly respected expert on conflict and violence. He is the
author of 15 books and 6 videos dealing with different aspects of de-escalation,
conflict resolution, self defense and use of force. He has conducted many
seminars for police, security, hospital staff and martial artists alike around
the world. He has lived and worked on the sharp end of life, including the mean
streets of Los Angeles, and working in security and correctional services.
The sharp end is not an exaggeration. Despite 100's of incidents involving
physical violence, he feels his greatest achievements are the 1,000s of
incidents that were peacefully resolved. He has been very successful at talking
down violent, sometimes psychotic, people. He honed his communication skills
because the options were 'de-escalate or bleed.' He knows first hand conflict
situations are emotional, stressful and scary. His proven ability as a 'Thug
Whisperer' isn’t magic. It is a learnable, teachable skill.
Teaming up with Rory Miller, a retired Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff and CERT leader, they developed Conflict Communications. During the development of the program for law enforcement, they realized insights and conflict strategies developed for de-escalating physically violent people also work with employees, managers, co-workers, spouses and teenagers. The had stumbled across the Rosetta Stone of conflict. Hence, Conflict Communication training is available in six different areas.
Law Enforcement Training
Correctional/Sworn Officers
Human Resources
Legal
Social Services/Schools
High Risk/Conflict Management
Why this course can help you:
*One, your safety. Knowing the 'check list' of pre-attack indicators, you can tell the difference between a loud and emotional -- but harmless -- threat display and when someone is preparing to attack. We also teach the importance of tactical positioning as an important component of de-escalation (without threatening someone you can still show them you are not safe to attack)
*Two, there are two kinds of bad use of force, excessive and unnecessary. Excessive is rare. Unnecessary is a legal nightmare you don't want to find yourself in. This training reduces these kinds of unnecessary incidents.
*Three, it indemnifies and protects you by teaching you to better articulate use of force incidents -- especially the build up to violence.
*Four, We are the only program that addresses how not to get caught in the emotional and primitive 'monkey dance' of conflict. One of our mottos is 'De-escalate yourself first.' If you can't do that, you are heading for an unnecessary use of force incident. You cannot be professional and let 'the monkey drive the bus.'
Before you can de-escalate someone else, you must de-escalate yourself.
We give you the means to do that.
Before you can apply other training you must have emotional control.
We'll show you how
Before you can find the 'best answer' for a situation, you have to know what's happening
We'll teach you the key points to look for in conflict
Before you can explain yourself in court, you have to know what happened
Well teach you how to articulate what you did to calmly resolve the situation and why you had to do what you did.
This program doesn't replace any previous training.
It makes it work better.
But more than all of that, this program is about improving communication and strategies to reduce and better deal with conflict. Other programs teach tactics. This program teaches WHY conflicts happen and how they manifest in different circumstances. We also teach about the irrational, emotional 'monkey brain agenda' issues that -- until they are addressed -- the conflict will NOT be resolved. These unresolved agendas which cause conflict will return. Whether the same fight over and over again or an argument over something completely different.
Basically it isn't that other programs don't work. The information is sound and technically correct. What people are lacking is this foundation to be able to apply those techniques out where they need them. We supply that. We don't replace any training, we just help people apply it out in the field.
This program is also useful in the workplace. Within many organisations there are serious problems between workers and departments. Politics, conflict, people not meeting professional standards, legal issues, troublesome behaviors and sometimes even physical violence ... the list is endless. And this list of problems costs more in time, money and waste than the correct training to deal with them effectively ever will.
That's where we can help. By teaching about the dynamics of conflict, monkey brain agendas and default emotional scripts, those issues that create ongoing conflicts and tensions within a group can be addressed and problems actually solved. When that happens productivity goes up, money is not only saved, but made and the likelihood of being sued goes way down.
Yes, this is a de-escalation program. Yes, it is a conflict management program. Yes, it is a conflict resolution program. It's all of that and more. What it really is is a bridge over the gap between training and application. It is what a person needs to know so they can take their previous training and actually apply it in a stressful, emotional and even dangerous situation.

21 - BCA / BCKA Kudo course at the end of this month
Message from Peter Consterdine:
I’VE
SEEN THE LIGHT! For years I’ve put my not inconsiderable brainpower(!!!!) into
thinking about what would be the finest ‘full contact’ competition – and never
came up with it. That is until Iain Abernethy sent me a video link to look at
and it was the Kudo World Championships and this was my ‘light bulb’ moment. So
much so that I’ve spent a large part of the past week going over as much footage
as I can to analyse the elements of Kudo competition and I now ‘get it.’ It is
simply fantastic.
Although on the world stage, Kudo has a history going back to the early 80s when
its founder, former Kyukoshinkai world champion and Judo player, Master Takashi
Azuma developed the format, it has only had a foothold in the UK for a few
years. Originally, Master Azuma called it Daido Juko, changing the name to Kudo
allowed it to be recognised as an official Japanese Cultural Budo sport.
However, this is under the watchful eye of one of Britain’s foremost MMA/Full
Contact fighters and old friend of the BCA, Lee Hasdell. I’ve had a long
conversation with Lee, after which I’ve been even more convinced that Kudo is as
near to the perfect format for a fighting system as it’s possible to get and not
just competitively, but as a real and practical combative system, if one trains
for the complete range of permissible techniques, which (and because of the
equipment) include head butts, elbows and knees to the head and a limited time
on the ground and any throw you can make work.
I feel within the BCA/BCKA population we have people who would shine at this
format and I want to get a combined Kudo squad together and to this end I’ve
arranged for Lee to come and do a seminar for us on Sunday the 29th May.
The real beauty of Kudo is that it doesn’t prescribe any specific martial art –
so whatever your background you could have a chance of making it work. I’m
limiting the numbers for the seminar and keeping the cost down to £50. To get
the chance to train with Lee is a fantastic opportunity in itself.
The seminar will take place at the British Combat Academy in Ossett (Wakefield),
W. Yorkshire. For more details and to secure you place please email me at

The information pack and application form have also been uploaded to my website

The BCA (British Combat Association) has undoubtedly had a bigger impact on UK
martial arts than any other body and I’m really excited about the positive
effects I see the British Combat Karate Association having. I strongly feel the
British karate scene needs an organisation like this and I’m sure it will be of
interest to many of you.
Please check out the downloads and the information below and if you have any
questions Peter will be only to happy to answer them. He can be reached at
