Subject: Iain's New Kata, Solo Training Throws & More!

Hi All,

I hope this newsletter finds you all in good health and high spirits. Just a few quick things to update you on:

----------------

1) Tandoku Kata

Monitoring the position of the target with one hand, while striking with the other, is common in the traditional kata. By placing a single focus mitt on one hand we can replicate a located target and hit with real impact. I have created a kata called Tandoku (“Alone”) specifically for this type of training. Each sequence exhibits different combative concepts and the kata contains a wide variety of techniques. It’s a good workout too! I have begun teaching the kata in the app this week. When app users have learnt the full kata, I think it would be fun to a do a live online session to go over the details!

You can see an extract of the kata here:

You can find the first lesson on the kata here:

Main Menu > Misc Techniques and Drills > Solo Training Ideas > Tandoku Kata > Tandoku Kata 1-3

2) Three Ways to Solo Train Throws (New YouTube Video)

https://youtu.be/cbIgcG5pe9o

In this video we cover three ways you can solo train throws. Obviously, nothing is better than a partner and there is no substitute for live practise. However, on occasions where a partner is not available, we can still work some elements of throwing.

This video shows how we can:

1) Practice throwing movements solo with no equipment
2) Practice throwing movements solo with a belt and secure anchor point
3) Practise throwing movement solo with a punch bag and a belt

To illustrate each of the practise methods, we show how they can be applied to both a one-handed and two-handed shoulder throws. However, the same methods can also be used for many other throws too. We see these throws in a number of the kata and older texts. They should be part of the practice of all serious karateka.

“In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and pressure against joints are included” – Gichin Funakoshi

“There are also throwing techniques in karate… Throwing techniques were practised in my day, and I recommend that you reconsider them.” – Shigeru Egami

"One must not lose sight of the fact that karate is "all-in" fighting. Everything is allowed … This is why karate is based on blows delivered with the hand, the foot, the head or the knee. Equally permissible are strangulations, throwing techniques and locks.” – Henri Plee

“In karate it is important to study and be familiar with chokes, throws and trips because failing to do so can place you in serious danger.” – Morinobu Itoman

3) Side Lines Heroism

In this week’s video message, I talk about “Side Lines Heroism”. Every week I post a message in my app to tell members about that week’s new additions. For the last few weeks, we’ve also been discussing the current situation and potential ways in which we can take care of ourselves and each other. I’m pleased that these “messages from the shed” are going down well. You can view it here:

4) Unsu In-Depth

As app users will know, one of our ongoing series has been Unsu In-Depth. We have broken down bunkai for the entire kata and are now looking at how we can use the methods in live drills. Next week’s episode (Part 16) will look at the use of Unsu’s throws in live drills. We then move on to look at pad drills for Unsu. I think this has to be the most in-depth breakdown of the kata that is out there. If you’ve not yet watched it, you can find it in the app here:

Main Menu > Kata Bunkai > Unsu > Unsu In-Depth > Parts 1 to 15
