Subject: Iain Abernethy October Newsletter (Itosu's 10 precepts of karate)
Iain Abernethy Newsletter: October 2007
Hi All,
Welcome to the latest Iain Abernethy.com Newsletter! As usual it's a week or two late! And as usual I have loads of stuff to share with you! I hope you enjoy the newsletter and find the information contained useful.
This month we have a fresh translation and podcast on Anko Itosu's 10 Precepts! Itosu was the creator of the Pinan (Heian) kata and one of the most influential masters in karate's history. In 1908 he wrote his 10 Precepts of karate, and this must be one of the most important documents on karate. Unfortunately translations of this document vary and these translations sometimes express very different sentiments. This newsletter (and the associated podcast) include a translation taken from scans of Itosu's original hand written document and carried out by an expert in this kind of translation (not as straight forward to translate as you may think!). Details can be found in section 3 of this newsletter and I hope you enjoy pondering the thoughts of one of the most important figures in karate's history.
This newsletter also contains on update on the progress of my new interactive drills DVD. As I've said in previous newsletters, I am incredibly proud of this DVD and believe it to be truly revolutionary. If you're looking to add a new dimension to your solo training, then be sure to check out section 2.
The third and final part of our "how to spar for the street" series is also included in this newsletter. This month sees us cover four more keys to ensuring your sparring is realistic and will develop true combative skill. This newsletter also includes finalised details of Kris Wilder's first UK seminar - including how to book your place - and details of Peter Consterdine 8th dan's upcoming DVD (which contains a few "hitchcock-esque" style appearances by yours truly ;-).
Anyhow, I'll shut up now and let you get into the body of the newsletter. Please have a look at the contents list below and see what grabs your attention!
Thanks for your support of these newsletters!
Best Wishes,
Iain

2, Iain Abernethy Interactive Martial Arts Drills DVD
We've had loads of pre-orders for the
new Interactive Solo Training DVD
and we had expected to take delivery of the DVD this week. The bad
news is we have been informed that the DVD is likely to be delayed by a
fortnight due to a delay in pressing (will be with us at the end of the
October).
Thanks once again to all those who pre-ordered
the DVD for their patience.
We are really are proud of this title and we are confident you will
feel it is worth the wait. The DVD provides a potentially infinite number of
solo training workouts and it will make a productive contribution to your
training regimen. It is possible to pre-order the DVD, and as soon as we
take delivery we will ship all pre-orders ASAP.
The NTSC version (USA and Canada) is still being produced and I'll let our American and Canadian contingent know when their version of the DVD is available via these newsletters.
You can also find further details of the new DVD via: http://www.iainabernethy.com/videos/MartialArtsDrillsInteractiveSoloTrainingDVD.asp
If you've not yet heard about the DVD, I've copied a brief write-up below that explains what it is all about:
I want to tell you all about my new DVD! We've been working on this project for two years and I'm delighted that it is now available. It's probably an overused word these days, but I really do think this DVD is revolutionary.
Up until now, martial arts DVDs have been instructional in nature, or contained a single workout for the viewer to do along with the DVD. However, the technology of DVDs means it is possible to make a DVD which is a totally interactive training tool.
The DVD is designed to help you develop a wide variety of martial attributes and get you motivated to train on those days where you don't have a training partner or can't get to the dojo or gym. The DVD will provide a complete martial workout every time it is viewed and is split into 10 sections. You can select to do any or all of these sections in any given workout. Each section contains a variety of drills, and each of these drills has further options within it. Instruction is provided for all the drills on the DVD. The DVD also contains all the required timers and counters and will automatically take you to the right one for each drill! To use the DVD you need no equipment except a little room and the DVD itself.
The upshot of all this is that the DVD will provide a huge variety of workouts. Indeed, you need never do the same workout twice! The drills are also constructed so that they will be relevant to all styles and all abilities.
The DVD includes a Warm-Up, Repetition Drills, Shadow Fighting Drills, Will Drills, Skills Training, Lower Body Conditioning, Upper Body Conditioning, Exercises for the Abdominals, Back and Neck, Flexibility Training (basic and advanced) and Mental Training. Not bad for a single DVD!
As I said earlier, the DVD is constructed such that I will ask you to make selections from the on screen menus as I guide you through each workout. It is therefore totally up to you what each workout consists of, how hard it is, and how long it is! To my knowledge nothing like this has ever been done before in the martial arts or fitness worlds. If the technology is there though, we should be making use of it! I feel this DVD will add a whole new dimension to your solo-training and I'm sure you'll enjoy using it.
Best Wishes,
Iain
The DVD costs just £19.99 (including UK shipping) and can be purchased by following the link below:

3, Anko Itosu's 10 Precepts of Karate: Podcast & New Translation
In this month's podcast we will be examining Anko Itosu's 10 precepts of karate! In 1908, Itosu - who was the creator of the Pinan (Heian) kata - wrote a letter outlining his views on karate and explaining why he felt karate should be introduced on to the Okinawan school system. This document gives us an insight in to the original karate system at the time where the "modern tradition" was being formed.
There are many English translations of this important document; but unfortunately they vary quite a bit and in some instances the various translations express very different sentiments. There is a 1938 book called 'Karate-Do Taikan' which contains relatively good quality photographs of Itosu's 1908 letter. To get the translation discussed in the podcast, I scanned the pictures of the original Itosu document from the book and sent those scans, without any background information, to one of the UK's leading translation companies. As non-karateka and professional translators I felt that they would be able to give an accurate translation.
The translation company informed me that the document was written in "a very old literary style" and hence was difficult to translate; even for professional translators. This may also help explain why the existing translations of the document vary so much? The translation company contacted a specialist based in the USA who would be able to accurately translate the document and the scans were sent to him.
The translation was taken from scans of Itosu's original handwritten letter. This translation was also done independently by a professional translator, who is a specialist in this kind of work. The translator was also not a martial artist and he therefore has no specific view to promote. I therefore have no reason to doubt its accuracy (copied below).
This podcast discusses Itosu's precepts and some of the ramifications they may have for how we should view karate. I hope that you enjoy it!

________________________________
Itosu's 10 Precepts (1908)
Karate did not develop from Buddhism or Confucianism. In the past the Shorin-ryu school and the Shorei-ryu school were brought to Okinawa from China. Both of these schools have strong points and I therefore list them below just as they are without embellishment.
1. Karate is not merely practiced for your own benefit; it can be used to protect one's family or master. It is not intended to be used against a single assailant but instead as a way of avoiding injury by using the hands and feet should one by any chance be confronted by a villain or ruffian.
2. The purpose of karate is to make the muscles and bones hard as rock and to use the hands and legs as spears. If children were to begin training naturally in military prowess while in elementary school, then they would be well suited for military service. Remember the words attributed to the Duke of Wellington after he defeated Napoleon, "Today's battle was won on the playing fields of our schools".
3. Karate cannot be quickly learned. Like a slow moving bull, it eventually travels a thousand leagues. If one trains diligently for one or two hours every day, then in three or four years one will see a change in physique. Those who train in this fashion will discover the deeper principles of karate.
4. In karate, training of the hands and feet are important, so you should train thoroughly with a sheaf of straw (#). In order to do this, drop your shoulders, open your lungs, muster your strength, grip the floor with your feet, and concentrate your energy into your lower abdomen. Practice using each arm one to two hundred times each day.
5. When you practice the stances of karate, be sure to keep your back straight, lower your shoulders, put strength in your legs, stand firmly, and drop your energy into your lower abdomen.
6. Practice each of the techniques of karate repeatedly. Learn the explanations of every technique well, and decide when and in what manner to apply them when needed. Enter, counter, withdraw is the rule for torite.
7. You must decide if karate is for your health or to aid your duty.
8. When you train, do so as if on the battlefield. Your eyes should glare, shoulders drop, and body harden. You should always train with intensity and spirit as if actually facing the enemy, and in this way you will naturally be ready.
9. If you use up your strength to excess in karate training, this will cause you to lose the energy in your lower abdomen and will be harmful to your body. Your face and eyes will turn red. Be careful to control your training.
10. In the past, many masters of karate have enjoyed long lives. Karate aids in developing the bones and muscles. It helps the digestion as well as the circulation. If karate should be introduced, beginning in the elementary schools, then we will produce many men each capable of defeating ten assailants.
If the students at teacher training college learn karate in accordance with the above precepts and then, after graduation, disseminate this to elementary schools in all regions, within 10 years karate will spread all over Okinawa and to mainland Japan. Karate will therefore make a great contribution to our military. I hope you will seriously consider what I have written here – Anko Itosu, October 1908
(#) – Translator not a martial artist and hence translated the word "Makiwara" to "Sheath of Straw" when leaving the word un-translated would have been fine.

4, How to Spar for the Street: Part 3 by Iain Abernethy
The third and final part of the "How to Spar of the Street" series has now been added to the website. This series of articles is adapted from my contribution to Loren Christensen's "Fighter's Fact Book 2". All martial artists should read that book and details of the book can be found on the associated webpage.
How to Spar for the Street: Part 3 by Iain Abernethy
In this series of articles we are discussing how to make your sparring relevant to real situations. As we've discussed in previous articles, the sparring in many dojos has little in common with real situations. Karateka train for a variety of reasons, so it is to be expected that they will spar in a variety of ways in order to address a variety of goals. If being able to protect yourself is one of your reasons for training, then your sparring needs to specifically structured so that it has relevance to the street.
In previous articles we have covered six of the keys to practical sparring. In this final part, we'll be covering the final four keys to making your sparring relevant to the street.
Don't limit the techniques or ranges
Anything goes in a real situation and hence you need to ensure your street sparring isn't limited. As a karateka, you need to ensure that you bring grappling into your sparring. There are a great many grappling techniques in kata and they should be brought into everyday training. The more wide-ranging you make your sparring the more realistic it will be.
You also need to ensure that you include the techniques not allowed by the rules. In combat sports, there are two groups of techniques that will be banned. First, there are the techniques that are banned in the name of the purity of the sport, i.e. boxing is about punching so anything that can stifle the exchange of punches is prohibited. All combat sports have similar restrictions in order to maintain the purity of the sport and give the spectators what they want to see. Secondly, there are the techniques that are banned in the name of safety, i.e. low blows etc. All of these banned techniques can be used in a street situation.
A real fight has no rules, and hence you need to ensure you ignore the rule book when you structure your street sparring. It's pretty easy to ignore the purity-based restrictions, but great care needs to be taken when ignoring the safety-based ones. In some instances you can substitute dangerous techniques for less dangerous alternatives. For example, if your partner secures a grip on the knot in your belt, it's a safe assumption he could also have attacked your groin in the same fashion. Likewise, putting the thumb on your partner's forehead above the eyebrows can be used as a substitute for eye gouges.
Substitutions like these ensure that you develop the skills to use and defend against such attacks. The flaw in this training is that if you're not mindful of the intent of the substitution, you may find yourself using the substitution in the street at a time when you should be using the real technique! As I said in part one of this series, always be aware of the flaws of any drill. Because the alternative is to omit the techniques completely, I feel substitution is the best way forwards.
In addition to substitution, you can also reduce the intensity of certain techniques to ensure safety. For example, if you nip your partner with your teeth, they can be sure they would be missing flesh if the fight was for real. It is very important that your sparring is closely supervised by a suitably experienced and qualified person when bringing potentially dangerous techniques such as biting and gouging into your sparring. The person supervising the sparring will be able to advise you on substitution, omission and intensity .....

6, Fast Track Arnis 2 / Dan Anderson UK 2008
Last month I told you about Dan Anderson's Fast Track Arnis 2 DVD. The Fast Track approach to Arnis is designed for people who want to add weapons skills to their arsenal, but who may not wish to study the entire system. I really am very impressed by this system and greatly enjoyed the seminars and instruction that Dan kindly gave me on his trip to the UK earlier this year (http://blog.iainabernethy.com/?p=58).
We are in the process of organising Dan's 2008 UK visit and it currently looks like he'll be back in the Autumn of 2008. The good news is that Dan's DVDs are very easy to follow and can help keep us ticking over in the meantime: http://danandersonkarate.com/store/arnis_FT6.html
There are two fast track DVDs and Dan's explanation of them and the fast track system are copied below:
Fast Track Arnis is a sub-system of MA 80 (Modern Arnis 80). MA 80 is a complete system meaning that all aspects of the core system - Remy Presas' Modern Arnis - are included. MA 80 is a life pursuit. Fast Track Arnis is designed to train the student/instructor in the essence of arnis without going through the entirety of a particular system (in this case, MA 80). It is divided into two distinct phases. Fast Track Arnis is motion based and each of the two phases is based upon a particular set of motion templates.
FT1 is based on a series of 6 flowing motions arranged in an X pattern
divided by a horizontal motion.
FT2 is based on a 1-4-12-9 template action with checking actions
interspersed.
FT1 emphasizes larger motions, flow, and largo (long) and medio (medium)
range applications.
FT2 emphasizes compact motions, finish, combatic application, medio & corto
(close) ranges.
FT1 is a broad shoot look at FMA and gives an overall view of it.
FT2 gets more into angular applications and is more specific.
The goal is to marry the two approaches towards the end of FT2 training so that one has long distance application as well as a close range application of the cane. Together they give you the essence of Filipino Martial Arts.
Fast Track Arnis is a single stick based system that can be translated into empty hand actions but does not necessarily need to. It is directed to previously trained martial artists who already have an empty hand skill base.
Each could be a stand alone training system but for best results they should be done in order; Fast Track Arnis Training Program volume 1 followed by volume 2.

8, Iain Abernethy in Norway (November 2007)
Details below taken from www.karate-jutsu.no an English version of this text is also available on that site.

elever.
Seminaret tar også denne gangen utgangspunkt i kjente grunnleggende
karate kata.
seminaret.
Samlingen er åpen for alle graderte over 16 år, uansett grad, stilart
finner du her.

11, Nick Hill Gold in British Masters Judo Championship
Nick Hill has been training in karate with me for years and is one of the stalwarts of my dojo. Nick's primary art is Judo; an art he has practised for decades (lots of decades! ;-). In addition to Judo and Karate, Nick has also practised and competed in wrestling and sombo. Nick and I visited Japan together and it was Nick who first introduced me to Mike Liptrot (my judo coach). On the 29th of September Nick competed in the over 55 years of age section of the British Judo Masters Championships. Nick won gold in the under 66kg category and silver in the under 73kg category. A picture of Nick and I in Japan can be seen on the news page of the website (www.iainabernethy.com/news_page.asp). Some of you will recognise Nick from the British Combat Association courses - where he was once mistaken for my Dad! - so I should probably point out that I'm the one on the left :-) Congratulations Nick!
12, Danny Corr Gold in World Jujutsu Championship
Danny Corr of Zanshin Karate is currently the only person that I have graded to 4th dan. A grand believer in holistic karate training and practical bunkai, Danny has also recently become involved in competitive Jujutsu. In the last weekend of September, Danny travelled to compete in the world sport jujutsu championships with the Irish team.
During the preparation for the tournament Danny broke his leg in sparring. Whilst that would be enough to finish off any hope of competing for most people, Danny let the injury heal and then trained like a crazy man! In August Danny weighed in at 88kg, but due to his hard work and a strict diet he had dropped to 79kg in time for the September tournament (the last time I visited his dojo - a fortnight before the tournament - I convinced him to join me in some fried eggs; so I'd like to think I did my bit to help ;-).
In the light-heavyweight final Danny faced a three time former world kickboxing champ and a BJJ black belt (competing for Australia). Danny told me it was "probably the toughest event I've ever experienced". As you've probably guessed from the title of this report, Danny did the business and won Ireland's first ever gold in the world championships! Congratulations Danny!
A picture of the new light-heavyweight champion of the world can be seen on the news page of the Iain Abernethy.com and on Danny's own website: http://www.truekarate.co.uk/index.html
13, Karate in the Cage Latest (footage of Neil Grove at Cage Rage 23)
In last month's newsletter I told you about Neil Grove (Goju Karate) and his upcoming MMA fight in Cage Rage 23. Neil - a student of renowned teacher Gavin Mulholland - has developed a reputation for quick finishes in MMA events (i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SsAmJz6-ZU) and this latest bout was no exception! Below I have copied a little bit of what Gavin told me of the event and a link to where you can view the fight (won't take you long to watch it ;-):
Neil was called up to
fight again on short notice. His opponent was Domagoj Ostojic, a Croatian
Thai Boxer with 35 wins and 29 knockouts under his belt. Apparently he was
Cro Cop's sparring partner for a long time.
The fight was on Saturday and can be seen here.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x31pqu_neil-grove-vs-domagoj-ostojic-cage_extreme
Again, Neil stuck to the plan, grabbed Ostojic from the start, took him down and finished him there. Excellent performance from Neil.
14, Rory Miller Online blog
Rory Miller is the author of the soon to be released book "Martial Meditations: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training and Real World Violence" (published by YMAA). I've seen the manuscript and the book truly is first rate!
"One of the best books on self-protection ever written! This book is packed with vital information and is certain to be of great benefit to all martial artists wise enough to read it. Outstanding!" – Iain Abernethy, British Combat Association Coach, 5th Dan Karate, Member of Combat Hall of Fame
Kris Wilder's Martial Minute newsletter recently included details of Rory's blog (well worth checking out!): http://chirontraining.blogspot.com
To get you started, the following link takes you to a post on a seminar that Rory and Kris did together: http://chirontraining.blogspot.com/2007/08/short-and-simple.html
If you've not yet listened to it, I strongly recommend the Podcast on Kris's site where he interviewed Rory. Please click on the link below to be taken to the page were you can download the podcast. Rory's is 4th up from the bottom of the page: http://westseattlekarate.com/podcast.shtml
15, SENI 2008
This year's SENI event will be held on the 26th and 27th of April 2008. Unfortunately that weekend clashes with the birthday of one of my children. I therefore am unable to attend on the Saturday and, because the event is at the other end of the country from where I live, I also can't make the Sunday as it would mean leaving my family to travel on the Saturday. As it happens I also have a seminar in the north on the Sunday so I would not be able to attend on the Sunday regardless. I've really enjoyed SENI in previous years and it is a shame that I can't make it this year. I will of course be sure to spread the word about the event and pass on all information as I receive it! Looks like being a good one!
16, Fighting Forms Latest Video Clips
Regular subscribers to these newsletters will be aware of Matthew Miller's book "Fighting Forms" and the video clips he has been posting on his website. For those who don't already know, the book covers how Kushanku kata (Kanku-Dai) can be practised as a two man form. To support the book, and so people can see Matthew's drill in action, there are a number of video clips that can be downloaded from Matthew's website (www.fightingforms.com). A brand new video clip has recently been added to the articles section (www.fightingforms.com/articles.html)! Like the last clip, this one was also filmed on a beach in Ibiza and is well worth checking out. When combined with the previous three clips, you really start to get an idea of the compete drill.
17, New Peter Consterdine DVD
As all those who attended the recent Peter Consterdine 8th dan course will know, the event was filmed! Peter's power generation, transitions and training drills are the stuff of legend and they have had a great influence on my own training and methods. You really do have to feel Peter hit to appreciate his power and realise just how different it is from what most martial artists would class as "powerful". I'm in the privileged position of being one of the very few who gets to train with Peter on a weekly basis. However, for most people the only chance to train with Peter at his open seminars; and such seminars are few and far between. It was therefore not surprising that most recent seminar was packed! Those there got to see the man in action and experience a tough and highly educational session. For my part, I got to help with the teaching (along with John, Peter, Steve and Mo), assist in a number of demos and generally kick back and enjoy myself ;-) It was a fun day!
The great news is that - unbeknown to the rest of us - Peter has arranged for the event to be filmed! The DVD is obviously no substitute for being there. However, if you want to improve the speed and power of your striking, as well as get some great ideas for effective training drills, then this DVD will be one you'll want to add to your collection. The footage is currently being edited and I'll be sure to let you know when the DVD is ready via these newsletters. Some pictures of Peter and myself taken at the event can be seen on the news page of the website: www.iainabernethy.com/news_page.asp
That's all folks! If you've any comments or suggestions relating to the website or these newsletters, please don't hesitate to drop me a line: iain@iainabernethy.com
All the best,
Iain Abernethy
