Iain Abernethy Newsletter: 15th of Feb 2019
Hi All,

Welcome to the new look newsletters! The aim is to send you shorter and more frequent newsletters. I hope you find them of value! So, without further ado, let’s get to the content!

All the best,

Iain

Note: This is an opt-in newsletter and if you want to unsubscribe at any time all you need do it click the link at the foot of this email

1 – Subscribers Questions

Going forward, in each edition I will include a short article on a topic of a subscriber’s choosing. If you’d like to suggest a topic, please email that topic to iain@iainabernethy.com IMPORTANT: Please make the subject of the email “Newsletter Question”. That will ensure the email is automatically forwarded to the right place. I will then choose a topic based on what is most requested and what I feel will be of most interest to the subscribers. I’m sorry to say that time constraints, and the volume of email I receive, mean I will not be able to answer each question individually. I nevertheless hope these question and answers are of value to you.

2 – Added to the App this Week!

This week we added a number of new videos to the app!

a) A new weekly video message from myself.

b) A look at the Wing-Chun dummy from a karate perspective! I’ve never practiced Wing Chun but I was asked to give my thoughts on motions of the Wooden Dummy Form from a karate perspective. This was a fun experiment! It has also inspired me to acquire a dummy to see how karateka can use it to practise the limb-control elements of our kata.

c) Further instruction on my two-person ground fighting kata. This kata is ideal for karateka looking to add some basic ground fighting to their training and teaching. Karate is first and foremost a striking system – in line with its civilian self-protection roots – but we also need solid grappling skills to support and augment the striking. The app has a lot of information on ground work from a self-protection perspective. This two-person kata covers the core movements, grips and escapes that the pragmatic karateka can use as a base for other forms of training (just as all kata should).

WERE TO FIND THE APP: Search the App Store or Play Store for “iain abernethy”.

NEED HELP JOINING? I appreciate that, like me, you may not be that clued up when it comes to technology. I also appreciate that all apps are different and hence it may not be obvious how to set up an account … so let me do that for you! All you need to do is send an email to app@iainabernethy.com with “New App Account” as the subject. I will then send you an invite with a username and pin that you can use to sign into the app. NOTE: You will not be charged anything until you personally set up a subscription. The account I set up for you will simply allow you to sign in, explore a little, and then set up a subscription should you chose to.

3 – Suggested App Video

There is a huge amount of material in the app, so each newsletter I will suggest a video to check out.

Naihanchi / Tekki Trapping Drill: This 40-minute video breaks down a trapping flow drill using bunkai from Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan. You can find it here:

Main Menu > Exclusive Seminar Footage > Naihanchi / Tekki Trapping Drill

In reality, trapping range quickly collapses so we don’t see those extended “trap-a-thons” so ubiquitous in modern movies. However, there is value in isolating the range to practise the tools needed to ensure we have clean paths for our strikes. That’s what this drill does. It’s not a replication of a fight, but a flow drill specifically designed to help you practise the trapping / limb control elements of Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan. It’s one of the drills that is a grading requirement for 1st dan in my dojo. I hope you enjoy working it. Please feel free to video yourself doing it and send over links so I can see how you are getting on.

4 – Recommended Forum Topic

As you know, the forum has great set of contributors and it’s definitely a community you should keep an eye on. I do appreciate there is loads to look at though, so each newsletter I will pick out a thread I feel will be of particular interest.

This thread looks at the application of traditional arts in self-defence:

It specifically looks at specificity in training, how to ensure relevance to reality, addressing limited training time, and other benefits of martial practise.

5 – Recent things you may have missed but will absolutely love!

Iain Abernethy & Andy Allen on the Motion Martial Arts Podcast:

Gretchen Carslon on “Two Approaches to Mental Strength”:

Kung-Fu Podcast: Primary Source of Ming Dynasty Martial Artists

Jamie Clubb Podcast: The Way of the Wolf

6 – Just for Newsletter Subscribers

Here are three “secret” things you should know about!

a) There’s a hidden YouTube video looking at a practical karate combination and three ways to train it: https://youtu.be/YpqT40TRs24 It will eventually go public, but newsletter subscribers will be getting advance warning on these things!

b) There a “long forgotten” and free karate e-book on my website. It’s not linked to any other pages, so it’s not easy to find. Well worth a download though:

c) Newsletter subscribers can get 20% off all downloads for 1 week (ends 22nd Feb) by using the coupon code “Newsletter” in the shopping cart. (Books, DVDs, etc are excluded).
