Hi All,
Firstly, thank you for your patience! I know it’s been a
little while since the last newsletter! This one is going to be brief too
because it’s past 1am on Christmas eve and, if I keep working, I’m in danger
of being visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future! Being self-employed,
I’m both Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchit in this scenario! :-)
My “Ebenezer side” has had my “Cratchit side” working hard
and I’ve managed to get 212 minutes of podcast out today!
Part 1: 76 mins on self-defence, kata history and general
training!
Part 2: 70 mins on bunkai and my personal like and dislikes!
Part 3: 66 mins on the future of practical karate, teaching
and miscellaneous questions!
I’ve also added a 76-minute video to YouTube today too! The video
cover some of the key aspects of my approach to kata and bunkai. While it’s
obviously not possible to cover all aspects in a presentation such as this, I
nevertheless hope that this general overview is of some value. Topics covered
include:
- Fighting vs Martial Arts vs Self-Protection
- Consensual vs Non- Consensual Violence
- Traditional view of Pre-Emption
- Pro-Active vs Reactive
- The Practicality of Reactive Methods
- The “Reinterpretation” of Close-Range Methods
- The Role of Stances
- Angles and Tactical Positioning
- The Three Keys to Understanding Bunkai
- The Four Elements of the Kata Process
- History vs Pragmatism
- The Three Elements of Valid Bunkai
- And More!
This video was added to the iain abernethy app earlier in
the year, so app users have already seen it. I have decided to make this one
public though in the hope that it encourages more people to explore kata in
greater detail. If the approach outlined in the video is of interest to you,
please email app@iainabernethy.com for
a free app account and trial.
Details of other events will be added soon!
I hope you all have a great Christmas and thank you for your
support in 2019!
Speak soon!
All the best,
Iain
