End of Year BUMPER Q&A Podcast!
This year's Q&A end of year podcast has been split in to three parts! Thanks to everyone who submitted questions and topics! In total, we have around 3.5 hours of martial discussion for you! I therefore felt it best to split the podcast into three parts, with each part looking at various topics.
Part 1: Teaching, Kata & Bunkai, and Impact Training!
Part 2: Self-Defence, Training, Teaching Children, and Female Self-Defence!
Part 3: General Karate Questions, Cross-Training, Pressure-Points and Miscellaneous Questions!
I’ve also included some of my favourite “Martial Arts Fun Facts” … none of which are true, but hopefully they will raise a smile :-)
Enjoy!
All the best,
Iain

3 – New Practical Kata Bunkai Videos!
Two new videos since the last newsletter!
Restricted Punching Pad Drill
The chaotic reality of self-protection means we need to be able to hit hard from any angle and any position. This pad drill is designed to help us develop explosive punching power from non-ideal positions. This drill includes striking while unstable, while kneeling, while sitting, while on our backs, while rising, etc. Additionally, the holder is not permitted to hold the pad flat, horizontally or vertically. This means we need to adapt the strike, and select the striking surface, to match the unorthodox angles presented. This is a very important drill and I hope you find it interesting.

Variations on a Bubishi Takedown
In this video we look at some variations of the bubishi technique called, “like an imp helping someone remove their shoes”. The first variation we look at is one to help us regain our feet should a criminal knock us to our knees in a self-protection situation. It is a technique of last resort to be used from a position of huge disadvantage.
The other variation is for fighting. It would be unsuitable for self-defence because it sees us deliberately seek the ground which would leave us incredibly vulnerable third parties. It can however be very useful in one-on-one consensual fights.
Both methods are useful in the right circumstances. As always, it is a matter of matching the methodology to the objective.

5 – Karate Throws Volume 1!
Karate Throws Volume 1 is now available on Download, DVD, and with App Subscription!
“In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and joint-locks are included” – Gichin Funakoshi
This video series looks at the “forgotten” throws that were once commonly practised within karate. The throws of karate can be found throughout the traditional kata and are well documented in the writings of the past masters. This video series will help practical karateka reintroduce this now neglected practise back into karate so it can once again be the holistic art it was originally created to be.
In addition to showing how to perform the throws, this video also shows where the throws can be found in the traditional kata and the writings of the past masters (complete with photos where possible). Additionally, this video also examines the underlying throwing principles encapsulated by the kata examples and shows additional ways in which they can be applied.
This volume looks specifically at the lifting throws which involve lifting the enemy’s feet off the floor. Volumes 2 and 3 (coming soon) will look at throws that trap the leg, and throws which disrupt posture.

10 - The World Combat Association
Iain’s Introduction To The WCA
The
exponential growth in those returning to practicing the martial arts in a
practical way means that there is now a pressing need for a global dedicated
association so practitioners of applied martial arts can band together for the
benefit of both the arts and themselves.
The bodies set up to promote sporting offshoots or a particular style or
methodology – as useful as they can be for their members – do little to promote
and enhance what we see as an extremely important aspect of the martial arts.
An open and inclusive worldwide association is needed for pragmatic
traditionalists and practitioners of functional martial arts. The World Combat
Association (WCA) fulfils this need!
Many martial arts bodies have a recurring bad habit of trying to limit the
freedom of their members and hence the WCA aims promote and enhance the wide
variety of pragmatic approaches without imposing unnecessary limits upon people.
The WCA will wholly dedicated to the promotion and furtherance of applied
martial arts. Your standard association will typically deal with things like
insurance, providing representatives for competitions etc. That is not the role
of the WCA.
The WCA has been set up to be an independent association of likeminded
individuals who believe that applied martial arts needs a body to address the
specific issues associated with our pragmatic approaches ....
