December Newsletter:

Pressure Points Podcast & Iain on Facebook!

Hi Everyone!

Pressure Points PodcastWelcome to the December newsletter! It’s a bit of a bumper Christmas issue ... and we’ve also got a bumper Christmas podcast for you! A whopping fifty-five minutes of pressure-pointy podcasty goodness! The podcast covers my take on pressure points – and a few other issues – and we’ve also added a few little enhancements to the podcasts which will hopefully make them all the more useful to you in your studies (see section 1).

The Beyond Bunkai DVD has got off to a fantastic start and thanks to everyone who has purchased it! Making DVDs is always very time consuming and expensive and it’s great to know that the work and investment has been worthwhile and that you are finding it of value. The newsletters, website, podcasts etc all take time and money to produce and it is those of you who buy the DVDs etc that keep the whole thing rolling along. If you like your Bunkai fast, frantic and free-flowing please be sure to check out Section 3.

We’ve finally set up a Facebook page! I know lots of you are Facebook users and have been extolling the value of Facebook to me for sometime. Apologies for being a little slow on the uptake, but it’s up and running now and I hope you find it a good and useful source of regular information. Please see Section 2 and if you could find your way to “liking” the page I’d really appreciate it!

The last few things I’d like to draw your attention to is Rakesh Patel’s regular Bunkai-Jutsu / Kata Combat classes (highly recommended – section 8), Louis Thompson's self-defence course, the pre-announcement of the Extreme Impact courses Steve Williams and I will be running in the spring of 2011 (section 6) and the Extreme Impact T-Shirts (section 7)!

There’s also loads of other stuff that I hope you’ll find of interest!

Thanks to you all for your support of these newsletters in 2010! If we don’t speak beforehand have a fantastic festive season and I’ll see you again in the New-Year. Have a good one!

All the best,

Iain

It is said "Kyusho is Kyusho" or Moxa cautery treatment points are vital points ... However, some points among them, which are comparatively difficult to attack or are less impact effective, seem to be excluded as vital points in karate and judo. This has to be so as their objectives are so different." - Gichin Funakoshi, Karate-Do Kyohan

1 - New Podcast: Pressure Points!

Pressure Points PodcastThis month’s podcast covers the always controversial subject of pressure points! In the podcast I give my own take on pressure points including my thoughts on chi, acupuncture theory and its relationship to pressure points, modern medicine vs. a traditional Chinese medicine approach, the relationship between power and accuracy, my five key places to strike, and my own “zone approach” to striking areas.

In order to thoroughly explore the above issues the podcast is a little longer than normal (55 minutes) so we can count this one as a “Bumper Christmas Special” ;-)

We also address quite a few listeners’ questions including bunkai and compliance, the gap between kata and self-protection in many dojos, training outside the dojo, how to teach bunkai to children and at what grade bunkai training should begin.

The podcast also has links embedded in the “comments” with links to related books and an online video. This is something I will continue with from now on to ensure the podcast is as useful to you as possible in your studies. We also embedded a little “pressure points” picture to give you something to look at when listening to the podcast on your i-pod or MP3 player!

I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with a new one in the New Year!

All the best,

Iain

2 - Iain on Facebook!

Iain on Facebook!I’ve finally got around to setting up a Facebook page! OK, so I’m a little behind the curve here as the Facebook phenomenon has largely passed me by and I was a little concerned about the extra “online time” it could generate. I already spend a lot of time keeping this site up-to-date, answering emails etc (around 4 hours a day), so I was not keen to add “Facebook time” to that.

However I’ve had chat with a few people and a Facebook page would seem to be a most elegant solution. Hopefully this will be a time efficient way off getting regular information to all Facebook users with an interest in what we do. So we set up a Facebook page last week!

The more observant among you will no doubt already have noticed the associated Facebook boxes on the home page and main forum page. Don’t they look cool! ;-)

It’s all a little new to me, so please have patience with me as I get it up to speed. However, if you could pop along to the page below and give me a “like” that would be very much appreciated:

As always, I want the page to be of service to you so please let me know your thoughts as things take shape via iain@iainabernethy.com

All the best,

Iain

3 - Beyond Bunkai DVD now Available!

This DVD presents a unique non-scripted flow drill that includes all the motions found within Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan. Ideal for the more experienced bunkai practitioner, and essentially infinite in its variations, this drill shows the depth of Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan and includes gripping skills, head-butting, biting, gouging, seizing, locking, controlling limbs, chokes, cranks, takedowns and close-range kicking.

This drill is also unlike most flow drills in that it is not carefully scripted nor does it involve giving up a position of advantage so your partner can have their turn. The drill instead enables the practitioner to dominate at close-range, flow past any obstructions the enemy may present, safely escape, and practise applying the bunkai of the kata in a realistic context. This DVD also includes a breakdown of the kata itself and a discussion on the history of Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan.

Iain Abernethy is one of the world’s leading exponents of kata application and practical karate. He has been invited all over the globe to teach his approach and to help people return to the original combative nature of the traditional martial arts.

4 - Iain on Geoff Thompson Podcast

Iain on the Geoff Thompson PodcastThe 100th Geoff Thompson podcast has just gone out and I’m pleased to say that I was the “special guest” alluded to in the podcast blurb.

For my part, the podcast includes what I find inspirational, my thoughts on self-defence, my tastes in music, suffering for your art, and how it’s a foolish man who crosses my mother!

You can listen to it via the link below and I hope you enjoy it:

6 - Extreme Impact Course!

Hi All,

Extreme ImpactIain and I have received tremendous interest and support for our Extreme Impact work, for which we are very grateful. We are now in the process of organising an Extreme Impact course to begin in the spring of 2011.

The course will consist of 3 workshops running over 3 consecutive months (Saturday is looking like the preferred day). It will focus heavily on helping you create dynamic, effective and practically applied training programmes. We will also take a close look at the 3 strength system which comprises of physical, mental and technical strength and which is the foundation of all Extreme Impact drills. Through a better understanding of this you will be able to develop training drills with meaning and focus that will benefit both you and your students.

Everyone who attends the Extreme Impact course will experience great personal development and both Iain and I guarantee that you will be able to hit harder, faster and for longer with improved technique.

More details including dates, cost and itinerary are to follow in the New Year.

Enough said!

7 - Extreme Impact T-Shirts!

Extreme Impact T-ShirtsSince Steve Williams and I first wore the Extreme Impact T-Shirts in the first five Extreme Impact units, people have been asking if they can buy the shirts. As it was, there were only two in existence and those were the ones Steve and I had specially made for the filming. However, with so many people asking, we decided to get some made!

Never ones to do things by half, we contacted Randori Fight-Wear and worked with them to make a high quality shirt. Indeed, we are looking to do a full range of equipment (gloves, shorts, hoodies, etc) in the longer term. Anyhow, if you were one of the people who’d like their own Extreme Impact T-Shirt, please follow the link below:

9 - X-Po "League of Super Friends" Podcast Parts 4 to 6

X-Po Podcast parts 4 to 6Below is the link to parts 4 to 6 of the wide-ranging discussion recorded on the evening before the USA side of the X-Po event earlier this year:

http://iainabernethy.co.uk/news/x-po-league-super-friends-podcast-parts-4-6

Kris Wilder, Rory Miller, Marc “Animal” MacYoung, Al Peasland, Nicholas Yang & myself had a good chat about all things martial at Kris’s place and recorded it. It has been split into eleven parts and we’ll be sure to bring you all other episodes as they become available. I hope you enjoy them!

All the best,

Iain

PS The "league of super friends" title was totally my idea, it has not been endorsed by any other participants, I'd now like to be known as "Captain Awesome" and I've renamed my home (lair?) as "The Impenetrable Fortress of Crystal"! ;-)

10 - Rory Miller Courses 2011

Message from Rory Miller

(NOTE: Rory has told me he is interested in visiting Europe to teach too so if any of you on this side of the pod want to train with Rory be sure to drop him a line - Iain)

I'm setting up my 2011 calendar. it will be a work in progress all year, but now is the time to lock in dates.

The basics: I can do one, two or multiple days.

The one day seminar covers:

Introduction

Safety briefing

My basic physical drill, the One-Step. It is a practice for efficient motion and steps off into a number of concepts.

Probably a demonstration of the difference between an assault and a feed, or sparring.

Lecture 1: The context of violence which covers seven things: 1) Legal and ethical overview; 2)Violence dynamics overview; 3)Avoidance, escape&evasion and de-escalation; 4) reflex training for counter-ambush; 5) Recognizing and breaking out of a freeze; 6) Fighting (just a taste of the differences, like environments, dynamics, luck and adrenaline that can affect skills and; 7) Aftermath, legal, physical and emotional.
Depending on the group, one or more skill development modules. Blindfolded infighting is fun, but some people need power generation more. With cops I usually do one on locks or pain compliance. It's all conceptual, so there aren't any techniques to memorize.
Operant conditioning: how to train reflexive response to an ambush.

Lecture 2: Self Defense Law. More one-step and skill-development modules. Leverage and leverage points; getting behind a threat (and why social conditioning makes that difficult) and face-masking/spine manipulation

Lecture 3: Violence dynamics (with videos - the videos are why I say no children unless I've personally talked to the parent and the parent is present). Different types of attacks, how to ID them, how the type affects everything from de-escalation to how to fight. We'll touch on gender differences in violence as well, and how to use them.
Debrief

This can be held anywhere.

The two day covers the above and then on a second day:

Dynamic fighting
Groundfighting
Environmental fighting
Scenarios, where each participant gets a live-action situation, responds and then must explain his or her decisions tactically and legally to the other students.

The second day requires the groundwork of Day One, particularly the legal aspects. I can make exceptions in some cases.

Conflict Communications is a program designed by Marc MacYoung and myself. It is a one-day seminar that can be taught by either or both of us.
ConCom covers
Root sources of conflict
Detecting when you have been emotionally hijacked
Identifying scripts
Manipulating scripts
Aborting, satisfying or changing social conflict scripts
Explaining when verbal de-escalation will fail

Primarily aimed at women, Understanding Violence is a two hour lecture on identifying, avoiding and de-escalating the different types of violence. It can be paired with hands-on training.

The Dream Team is available. The price is $20,000- $25,000 (depending on whether a location is supplied and travel) and requires ninety days to set up. For that up to twelve people will get an introduction to criminal violence that will include how to read a nightclub, identify different strata of criminals, notice weapons, hand to hand, weapons and scenario training...an experienced former bad guy will also explicitly explain how marks are chosen, set up, taken out and how evidence is destroyed and the interview process is manipulated. If you have a need to know how bad guys think and how they are taken down, I have people for that.

Custom courses can be designed for specialized classes, for instructors, for LE personnel and formats can range from likely assault analysis to following the Force Continuum.

My apologies if some of you are on multiple lists and get this a couple of times.

If you want to get on the schedule, e-mail me (rory@easystreet.net).

Rory

11 - 2011 Now Fully Booked

As I’ve mentioned in the last few newsletters, my diary has been filling up quickly for 2011 due to increased demand and the fact that I’m making less dates available for seminars (I need a little more time to push other projects forward). All the dates I had put aside for 2011 have now been booked up and there is nothing else available for next year. Although the dates are all taken, details for the seminars in the last few months of the year are still being finalised and I’ll put those details on the website and in the newsletters as things are confirmed.

For those who would have liked me to visit them next year but who have left it too late, please accept my apologies. I do hate to disappoint, but if you bring your students along to the nearest event in your area than you will still have the opportunity to train with me. Details of seminars for the next few months can be found below.

16 - Kurikara: The Sword and the Serpent (Book by John Evans)

The sword and the serpentIn Mikkyo—Japanese esoteric Buddhism—the dragon Kurikara symbolizes the internal energy developed through sword practice. Kurikara is a manifestation of the fierce bodhisattva Fudo Myo O, the patron of ascetics and warriors in Japan, who uses his sword to destroy delusions and sever attachments. Fudo’s sword represents the gaining of discriminative power and decisiveness—the ability to cut through illusion and attachment. This leads to the development of an inner energy that allows one to “burn up” all obstacles to spiritual freedom.

Kurikara: The Sword and the Serpent sets out the eight basic principles of swordsmanship common to all Japanese sword schools, emphasizing the cultivation of power and mental focus. Accomplished martial artist John Evans provides practical examples from his experience with the sword arts as well as Mikkyo (Japanese esoteric buddhism) and shugendo (mountain asceticism). The first foreign student to train with Nakamura Taisaburo sensei—widely acknowledged as the master of the sword art battodo—Evans clearly explains how skill such as Nakamura sensei’s can be systematically developed through tanren, exercises that meld “inner” and “outer” power. Filled with fascinating anecdotes from Evans’s training in Japan, Kurikara is a useful, inspiring guide to Japanese sword practice and its spiritual underpinnings.

18 - Fighting Tactics & Strategies Book by Dan Anderson

Hi All,

Dan Anderson BookSeeing as how my online store is filled with all sorts, it is easy to get lost in the "library." I though I'd showcase a book or DVD now and again to cut through the mass of materials. Shown below is the follow up to American Freestyle Karate: A Guide To Sparring. AFK was the first book on karate sparring. This book deals with many of the actual techniques that I used to compete with over the years. As you can tell the front cover is taken from an actual match of mine. Here is an email from a happy reader:

"Dan, I received the book. Excellent. I find your explanations of techniques very readable and user-friendly. You provide enough detail so non-experts, such as myself, can really comprehend what you are explaining. Over my many years (although I think you have about 3-4 more years than me) I have seen instructors using some of these techniques, but I guess they were 'secret' because the exact 'how-to', step-by-step was not explained. I appreciate your sharing this knowledge.
Jim L."

You can find this book at this link

Enjoy,

Yours,

Dan Anderson

19 - Charlie Wildish Free Online Videos

Message from Charlie Wildish:

Charlie Wildish from www.BunkaiJutsu.com is offering 2 free informational video bonuses to anybody who signs up to his newsletter.

The first video is about quick fight finishers for when your attacker is drunk, high on drugs or so adrenalized that they don't feel pain in the normal way as these thing numb the senses. Even a kick to the groin, thumb in the eye or a broken joint will not necessarily stop somebody who that far gone with drink, drugs or adrenalin. So how do you stop somebody who does not seem to feel pain and who is completely beyond any reasoning. This worst case scenario will be covered by the first video; but be warned some of the techniques are dangerous and should not be used unless you are in real threat of harm.

The second bonus video is a comparison of circular and linear techniques. This may seem obvious on the surface, but most techniques contain circular and linear movements. For example with a reverse punch you rotate your hips, yet your fist goes out straight (linear and circular movements in the same technique). Charlie explains what is actually meant by these terms, along with the relative advantages of each type of technique. This is useful to understand because every style contains elements of both circular and linear technique and by being able to identify the differences and knowing relative strengths, you will be better able to work out applications for yourself.

Also, when using circular techniques, it is easier to get a "whipping" feeling into your technique (the old Okinawan masters often spoke of using your body like a whip). However, many people practicing what are primarily linear styles (Karate/TKD) often have trouble translating the "whip" into their linear punches. Charlie explains how to do this at the end of the second video.

Charlie works with his friend Keith McKay Cormack, a Kung Fu exponent on their main website, which contains articles and video's about practical application for all traditional martial arts. You can check this out at www.BunkaiJutsu.com or go straight to the Newsletter sign up page at http://bunkaijutsu.com/?page_id=544
