August 2011 Newsletter: New Podcast and New Online Videos!

Hello Everyone!

Multiple Enemies PodcastI hope this newsletter finds you in good health and high spirits? An especially warm welcome to the new people who have joined us since the last newsletter.

The main item for this newsletter is a new podcast on multiple enemies! If you see section 1 you can find out more. I was also on the martial secrets podcast with Kris Wilder recently and you can find out how to get hold of that in section 3.

We’ve also added quite a few new online videos since the last newsletter. In particular we have added one video on Kushanku / Kanku-Dai bunkai, and another on groundwork since the last update. If you see section 2 you can find all the details and a link to the webpage where you can view all the videos put up over the last month.

Marc MacYoung will be teaching in the UK in October! I highly recommend Marc and anyone who wants their training and teaching to address the realties of violence needs to get to this course. I think you would be hard pressed to think of anyone who has done as much, for as long, for ensuring self-defence is approached realistically as Marc. Please check section 7 for more details.

The final thing I’d like to draw your attention to in this introduction is upcoming private sessions on Naihanchi / Tekki (section 4) and our current 3 for the price of 2 offer (section 6).

Thanks for the support of these newsletters! We have thousands of subscribers from all over the globe and I think it’s great that people are finding them useful.

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

1 – New Podcast: Multiple Enemies

Multiple Enemies PodcastWelcome to August’s podcast! In this podcast we discuss the issue of multiple enemies. Despite the fact that multiple enemies are a likely occurrence in self-protection situations, I think it would be fair to say that the majority of groups ignore this likelihood and concentrate solely on one-on-one methodologies and tactics. Unfortunately, one-on-one methodologies and tactics can work brilliantly when things are one-on-one, but can be totally inappropriate and fail dramatically when the numbers increase. The need for solid technique at all ranges remains constant, what changes is what techniques we choose to use and how we choose to use them.

In this podcast we look at multiple enemies from both a self-protection perspective and, towards the end of the podcast, from the perspective of karate kata. We also look at what tactics are most effective when facing multiple enemies, how to pre-emptively strike when facing a group, the basics of designing training drills for multiple enemies, some multiple enemy myths, and how kata can help prepare us for multiple enemies (and it’s not how many people think it does!).

It’s obviously a very big topic – one we are sure to return to – but I hope you find the podcast touches on the key issues and provides some food for thought.

One other thing mentioned in the podcast is that these podcasts will have been going for five years in October! I’m hoping to do something a little special for that one, but I’ve no idea what! If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I hope that you enjoy this podcast and thank you for your support of them!

2 – Online videos since the last newsletter!

Online VideosTo make things easy for newsletter subscribers I thought it would help if I put all the videos we have done since the last newsletter update (July 8th) on the webpage linked below. I’ve embedded all the “practical kata bunkai” videos put out during that time on this page.

I’ve been sending out the occasional update too, but since the last one I’ve added a video on Kushanku / Kanku-Dai bunkai and another on grappling and groundwork. Please follow the link to view these videos.

Since the last newsletter, we also put up the final part of the three part Extreme Impact drill. So that people can view the full drill more easily, I’ve embedded all three parts on this page too.

1 - Ground Work and Valley-Drop Takedown

2 - Kushanku / Kanku-Dai Bunkai (Strikes into Neck Crank)

3 - Stances & Heian Shodan Application

4 - The "Two-Hands" Principle

5 - What Angles Mean And Why Things Are In Threes

6 - Extreme Impact Drill Week 1 of 3

7 - Extreme Impact Drill Week 2 of 3

8 - Extreme Impact Drill Week 3 of 3

I hope you enjoy the videos and there are plenty more to come!

3 - Iain Abernethy chats to Kris Wilder on the Martial Secrets Podcast

Kris Wilder (co-author of ‘The Way of Kata’ & ‘The Little Black Book of Violence’) and I had a 45 min chat for his Martial Secrets podcast when I was in the USA last week. It was a fun discussion on stances, writing, my teachers, unhealthy (but delicious!) food stuffs, and a few other things besides. You can download and listen to the podcast via this link:

http://www.martial-secrets.com/2011/07/24/iain-abernethy-animal-list-bbq-interviews-2010/

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did recording it.

4 - Mastering Bunkai: Naihanchi / Tekki (coming soon)

In 2012 I will be running some private sessions for those wanting to get into the fine detail of various aspects of my approach to practical karate and kata bunkai. I’ll be running 3 days (1 day a month / 18 hours of total instruction) on the detail of the Naihanchi / Tekki bunkai and drills that I teach. There will just be 10 places available and if you’d like to be one of that ten, please drop me an email (iain@iainabernethy.com) and I can send you further details.

5 - Full Iain Abernethy Animal List BBQ Seminar Online Soon

If you check out the webpage below, you can see three clips filmed last month at the Animal List BBQ in Colorado, USA. At the session I covered the fundamentals of my approach to kata bunkai, and I think the video of that session made a pretty good summary of what I do.

The video was not professionally filmed, but as you can see if it clear enough and the sound is good. So my plan it to edit the full thing together and make it available for download. We need people to pay for our professionally filmed downloads in order to recoup costs and to keep this whole thing rolling along. However, I want to use this footage as gift for my supporters … so please watch this space! As soon I’ve got it all edited together, I’ll let you know how you can get hold of it.

Watch the clips made available so far via this link: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/all-practical-kata-bunkai-pad-drill-videos-july-8th

6 - Buy 2 get 1 free on all our books and DVDs!

For those who don’t know, we have an offer running on the website whereby anyone buying 2 DVDs can select a 3rd DVD for free! (#) The same offer means that anyone buying 3 books will get the cheapest one for free. The way it works is that when you add the third item to your shopping cart, the website will automatically discount the cost of that item. If you take advantage of this offer you can make significant savings.

(#) – This offer only applies to books and DVDs. Downloads are excluded.

7 – Marc "Animal" MacYoung in UK in October (Rescheduled)

Marc MacYoung SeminarMarc MacYoung will be teaching in the UK in October! I highly recommend Marc and anyone who wants their training and teaching to address the realties of violence needs to get to this course. I think you would be hard pressed to think of anyone who has done as much, for as long, for ensuring self-defence is approached realistically as Marc. I’m helping with the organisation and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me (iain@iainabernethy.com). The chief organiser is Mick Franklin and you can find more details from him below:

Message from Mick Franklin:

Greetings,

My name is Mick Franklin, I am a 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate but today I am writing to you as a representative of Conflict Communications. I wish to make you aware of our upcoming course on De-escalation. This 1 day course will be conducted by internationally acclaimed Marc MacYoung, a man who has lived and worked on the sharp end of life dealing with violent and aggressive people, but more importantly was able to attain and master the skills to defuse potentially violent situations, and then successfully pass those skills on to martial artists, hospital and police staff all around the world.

This course really is one of a kind. Rather than just being an "aggression management" course you will learn the source of all conflicts and more importantly what to do about them. The skills you will learn are not just useful for preventing violent attacks, but will also greatly benefit the way you interact with people in all situations, including at work and in your personal relationships. Your martial arts techniques may be superb but can you recognise when someone really intends to hurt you? Can you defuse a violent individual? Do you have the skills to explain to the police and courts what steps you took to avoid it becoming physical, and explain, in a legal sense, why you did what you had to do?

Course Dates: October the 29th for De-escalation (9am to 5 pm), October the 30th for the Body Mechanics in Martial Arts course (9am to 5 pm)

Course Costs: £40 for 1 day only, or £70 for both days

Location: 19 Arthur Street, Edinburgh,
EH6 5DA

Duration: 8 hours each day

Bonus workshop: there is also a Knife Defense workshop running on October the 28th, which is £20 for 4 hours (6pm to 10pm)

If you would like some further insight in to Mr MacYoung's training you should begin with his website, I think you will be impressed:

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/

I have also included a brochure of the De-escalation Course for you below.

If this is something you would like to press ahead with, or if you just have some questions, then let me know. I am taking note of interest now.

Kind regards,

Mick Franklin

P.S. Marc MacYoung will be running a course on Body Mechanics in Martial Arts on the day after the De-escalation Course. This course will show you how to generate more power from your techniques (regardless of your style) and to apply a critical eye to why a technique works or doesn't work, as well as making students aware of important elements that are currently missing from the way bunkai and kata is taught in most schools. I can honestly say, however, that despite my 10 years of full contact Kyokushin Karate I have learned a lot from Marc in a very short time about good technique and generating power.

Details from Eric Parsons:

Hello,

I hope everyone is managing to keep cool during this summer heat wave.  After a month of 90+ degree weather, I think we're all looking forward to the break in the heat that the autumn weather will bring.  And along with that cooler weather, we have an awesome martial arts seminar coming to the Kansas City area.  Iain Abernethy will be leading his first ever solo seminar in the US on October 7-9 at MCC - Blue River in Independence, Missouri.  This is not an event to be missed.  Since my last email, we've added several states to the roster of those represented - Georgia, Connecticut, and Washington, to name a few.  As you can see, martial artists are coming from all corners of US to attend this seminar, so register now to reserve your space.  This one is likely to sell out.

And for those few of you out there who aren't familiar with Iain's work (Where have you been hiding?) and need more convincing, check out his website www.iainabernethy.com.  Make sure to block out some time when you do so, though, as you are likely to get lost in all of the top-notch information available there.

We've also set up a great hotel deal for all of the attendees coming in from out of town.  The Hilton Garden Inn (19677 East Jackson Drive, Independence, MO  64057) has given us a special room rate of $89.00 a night (tax not included) for a double room.  These rooms typically run $140 a night, so this is a very nice rate, especially as Oct.7-9 is NASCAR weekend in Kansas City.  If you're interested in taking advantage of this offer, just contact the hotel at 816-350-3000 and tell them that you're part of the "Iain Abernethy Seminar" group.  Space is limited, however, so make sure to book your rooms early.

Well, that's all I have for now.  I have attached the seminar flier/registration form to this email.  Feel free to pass that on to anyone you believe will be interested and/or post it to your blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Registration payments can be made either through Paypal (contact me for details) or via check (cheque) made out to the Karate for Life Foundation.  Registrations should be returned to the venue address or directly to me at Eric Parsons, 3711 Oakland Gravel Road, Columbia, MO  65202  USA.

I can't wait to meet and train with all of you in October!

All the best,

Eric Parsons

10 - Shaolin Warriors 2011: A Journey Across Europe

(or Where’s the cucumber?) by Russell Goold

This article by Russell Goold is a fantastic and amusing insight into life on the road with the Shaolin Warriors. Thanks to Russell, my family and I got to see their show this year and it was superb! You can find my write up on that experience here: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/news/iain-and-shaolin-monks

Russell sent me this tale of their travels and I really enjoyed it! I asked Russell if he would be OK with me posting it here for members and visitors to this website and I’m pleased to say that he was!

I hope you enjoy this article and if you want to contact Russell you can reach him via his karate group’s website: http://midlandwado.com

All the best,

Iain

Shaolin Warriors 2011: A Journey Across Europe (or Where’s the cucumber?) by Russell Goold

Shaolin WarriorsBefore we begin this journey, I need to make you aware of a small piece of paper. This paper is called an ATA carnet, and is an official document which details all the goods in the back of the vehicle, and is stamped by an official, thus rendering ones transit across the world in peace and harmony—The ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows the holder to temporarily (up to one year) import goods without payment of normally applicable duties and taxes, including value-added taxes.

You will need this nugget of information later.

When we were told by Corrado, our European booker that there is a chance to take the Shaolin Warriors show to Geneva, and subsequently Belgrade in Serbia after the UK leg of the tour, we were all very excited, and it seemed that finally the company; Theatre Productions International, had made the first steppes (sic) into mainland Europe!

After the very successful UK and Ireland tour, all was geared up to take 3 large vans with the equipment for the show to Jersey, where we were to  play half a week, and then onwards to la Continent. (We decided not to take the tour Lorry, as there are driving restrictions in Switzerland at weekends)

We all (sort of) knew that we needed various documents to transit (see what I did there?) across certain borders, but because we were travelling mostly in the EU, we also knew that Europe has free borders, and that really we shouldn’t have too much problems getting through. It was only a theatre show after all, and everyone loves a show!

So off to Jersey Opera House

Getting the ferry to Jersey from Poole harbour was easy, and the fast boat was –fast! (I had trouble standing up in the duty free shop, which is where I had based myself for the duration)

Arriving in Jersey, we found the accommodation eventually, and had a relaxing evening. The next day we went straight to the Theatre (Opera House) and had a great time with the local crew (sounds different when you say it out loud) and a very successful run.

Jersey is a lovely island, and we did get time to explore the town and the surrounding countryside. Going to a beach and having ice creams with Jersey cream. If you can imagine England in the 60’s but with a French feel to it, then that’s what Jersey is like. Think Sophisticated, with a touch of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot thrown in (oops should have mentioned Bergerac if I was doing the detective theme).

The Warriors were staying in a hostel, which was lovely and recommended. They even had a Zorb ball, in which you put yourself in a big balloon and roll down a hill. (I don’t know either)

Footnote to this: If you bring a van longer than 13 ft, then parking is impossible, so be warned, however you can park at the harbour, if you are prepared to walk back to town.

Another note: Don’t take a 3.5 tonne Luton van down the “green routes”, although you will see red squirrels (yes I did) and deer, you will also have to reverse 2 miles if something comes the other way—oops.

So Jersey was a success and it was a wrench to have to leave.

The morning dawned when we were to get the fast boat to St Malo, (France) and continue on to Geneva, (Switzerland) and we needed to be at the Jersey harbour port at 6am, so we were up very early on that Sunday morning.

11 - New Neil Pottinger DVD:

Kata Bunkai & Theory: Pinan Kata Bunkai, Muchimi & Balance Points

Note from Iain: We have some preview footage of this great DVD that we will be sharing very soon!

Neil Pottinger: My aim was to challenge myself with a Jissen Karate 4th Dan. I aspired to pursue ‘the best’, a realistic challenge under the examination of Sensei Iain Abernethy 6th Dan.

New Neil Pottinger Bunkai DVDFor me the term ‘’Jissen’’ means more than only ‘realistic fighting’, it can mean realistic self challenging within all areas and attributes within the pursuit of the application and perfection of karate as a whole.

This project without doubt fulfilled and stretched me beyond what I believed to be the limits of my capabilities.

I now wish to share the DVD and E-book production which was the primary part of my project.

The work covers two main concepts which I address in depth, the first being ‘Balance point Theory’ covered within personal Bunkai examples from the Pinan series, and the second being the sticking concept of ‘Muchimi’. Rather than dissecting an existing Kata to find my ideas and applications, For this concept I developed a personal Kata which I recorded all drills and sequences which I express within a methodical and structured way. My interest and what became a fun challenge was to conceal certain alternative options, and back ups in a clever way throughout the Kata. It is clear that the past masters also did this in their historical creations.

To order a DVD copy by Paypal go to my website, www.shetlandbudokai.com

Bonus work included is a personal biography of my years in Karate on route to this level, and also a copy of the syllabus worked on the grading day.

“Neil Pottinger has a superb understanding of Kata and how it should be applied in real conflict. This professionally filmed DVD is one that all Karateka should own and spend time studying. The applications are highly functional, the demonstrations are very impressive, and the explanations very thorough. The DVD is also information dense and not only contains some superb Bunkai for the Pinan / Heian series but also bonus instruction on Neil’s Muchimi drills (and the associated Kata). And not only that! You can also receive an E book of the written work that supports the DVD and tells you all about Neil’s journey through the martial arts. Great content and great value!” Iain Abernethy 6th Dan.

“Neil is a very committed and dedicated instructor, with a strong determination and passion for karate. I am privileged to be one of the first to have the opportunity to study Neil’s 4thDan project. I have trained with him a few times, and can truly say that this project sums him up to a tee. The work is veryprofessional, with complete attention to detail and a passion for karate that spills out from every page. I have picked it up and re-picked it up, and when I read the biography I could not put it down until I had finished. In my humble opinion this project for a 4th Dan was excellent. As I have said to Iain in the past, there are many karatekathat have so much to give which they do for little or no reward. I feel honoured to have trained with Neil to be on the receiving end. This is one for the true traditional karateka”Michael Smith 1stdan Kernow Karate club, Essex.

“This DVD is outstanding work. I am really impressed! The drills are easy to understand and utilize. It is an excellent combination of explanation, technique, application, and linkage to Kata. This is a great benefit for traditionalists. Neil does a very good job of explaining how each of the drills works as well as how one might (or might not) utilize each application in a self-defence situation.” – Jamie Gray, Chief Instructor of Musashi Karate www.musashikarate.co.uk

“Neil’s DVD addresses important and indeed vital aspects of Kata Bunkai and original work. He begins by exploring balance point theory with particular reference to the hip, leg and arm. He then continues to clearly demonstrate Muchimi kata which he created specifically for this project. This kata is exemplified by dividing it into six individual bunkai/aspects. These are all closely analysed and relevance and continuity are emphasized. This approach thoroughly and credibly exposes its depth, application and originality. As well as original work we are invited to observe opening applications for all of the Pinans. These are professionally executed and detailed explanations are offered. I feel that special attention should be given to the powerful semi-live drills section which might sometimes be viewed as a little chaotic but reasonably reflects what might happen, in reality, on the street.” – Charles Jones. Wado Karate. 1st. Dan

“I am more than happy to highly recommend this work. This is a fascinating study, not only of how a 4th Dan project evolved into a new Kata but also into a DVD with an accompanying Ebook.

The main topic of the 4th Dan project is Muchimi Kata, with clear step by step instructions and practical Bunkai drills could easily pass off as an ancient Kata, which like Tekki / Naifanchi has a very deep meaning with many Bunkai applications both in the form of Do and Jutsu.

Neil then goes on to write a biography of the trials and tribulations of his struggle and commitment to get the best out of life and the way of martial arts within Karate.

Neil is very passionate about Karate Jutsu, it is always an honour and a pleasure to train with him therefore I have no hesitation in recommending him for seminars and courses on the Kata Muchimi and principles.”
– Steve Gordon 1st Dan Satori Shito Ryu.

Latest seminar feedback (ZOKU Shotokan Karate, Herts UK) on Sunday 17th July, 2011:

We had 19 students take part in our Kata Bunkai Seminar, held by Sensei Rakesh Patel. This course taught the realistic 'combat' aspect of Kata and helped the students raise their Bunkai knowledge and skills to a completely different level. The lower grades attended a two hour course and the higher grades attended a full 4 and half hour seminar. The comments and feedback has been fantastic! The course went very quickly...too quickly according to some. Everyone who attended had their licenses signed by Sensei Patel and they thoroughly enjoyed their experience.”

17 - Itay Gil in Edinburgh on the 19th of September

Message from Mick Franklin

Greetings,

On the 19th of September a 1 day Restraints course will be held in Edinburgh and will be taught by Mr Itay Gil, the man who has led and trained the Israeli Special Forces and the Yamam Counter Terror Police.

This is a 1 day course and will cost £90.

Mr Itay Gil will be running the course personally. He is considered to be the top trainer of prison guards in Israel. He currently has 55 prison guard teachers who are always keen for his training and are paying him well for the privilege. Also, the course is normally about twice the price in Israel, but since Mr Gil is relatively new in the UK we can lower his prices just this once.

This course is suitable for martial artists, police, security personnel, mental health nurses and anyone concerned about self defence and defending others. The concepts that participants on the course will learn are the following:

defense in confined spaces

takedowns, groundwork and restraints

escapes from holds/chokes

teamwork against violent inmates

Legal use of force vs Illegal use of force

Body language and reading suspicious behaviour

Pre-emptive measures in self defense

defense against objects that are sharp/blunt/improvised

The emphasis of the course is on learning effective techniques and then applying them at the right time and for the right reasons in scenario based situations.

All participants will be awarded with Certificates at the end.

If you have any questions you would like me to answer please let me know and I'll be as much help as I can.

Thank you sincerely for your time,

Mick Franklin

I strongly feel the British karate scene needs an organisation like this and I’m sure it will be of interest to many of you.
