Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | January 2025

January 29, 2025

Happy New Year!

The new training semester has kicked off with 43 men returning for 2nd phase, and 5 men in the Leadership & Communications class. With leadership, we have 59 men in the Battalion. Please be in prayer for all of our staff and students as we launch into another year of training and service.

ALERT Reunion 2025

ALERT's 31st anniversary is right around the corner, and we'd love to see you at the 2025 Reunion (February 7-9). If you haven't ever been to one of these reunions, they are a great time of reconnection, fellowship, and fun. We are honored to have Lt. Col. Russell Moulton as our opening night speaker, and we are looking forward to a great weekend together. We are also adding four names to the Alumni Memorial Wall in a ceremony on Saturday night, February 8. We are remembering the following men who passed away last year:

Schaeffer, Zane (U63)

Exstrum, Thomas (U9)

Moulton, Daniel (U17)

Johansson, Anders (U13)

During the ceremony there will be a time for people who knew the deceased to share a little about their life before we add their nametape to the wall.

If you are attending the Reunion and would be interested in helping memorialize any of these men, please contact Cpt. Winkler (swinkler@alertacademy.com). We will also be livestreaming the ceremony on ALERT's Facebook page for those who can't attend in person. Schedule and registration details are available at alertacademy.com/reunion

New Alumni Signal Chats

Some of you may be aware that there is now an unofficial, but formal, text thread for professional networking, engaging our communities and spheres of influence, and sending valuable information to the extensive ALERT alumni network.  Micah Rawlins from Unit 31 put this together on Signal. You can find and join the group chat here.

There is also a more informal one as well, which is just for general catching up between Alumni: You can join that group here.

Anders Johansson’s Funeral

Two weekends ago I had the privilege of being able to attend the funeral of Anders Johansson (Unit 13). It was a bittersweet occasion, to say the least. The loss of Anders, and the accompanying deep grief, was palpable all weekend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The opportunity to reconnect with many alumni, and meet new ALERT men from all over the country, impressed upon me once again just how important the work we are doing here is. The bond and connection that ALERT creates, and has created for over 30 years, in the lives of the alumni is unique and real. It's something worth being a part of, it's something worth continuing to create, and it's something worth passing along to future generations.

Forge on!
