Subject: The Gospel Continues to Declare that #BlackLivesMatter

Dear Hot Metal Community,

I write once again in the wake of a murder of a black man at the hands of police. George Floyd was a beloved child of God. His life was taken away cruelly and inhumanely and for no reason other than he was dehumanized by the racist inclinations of the police that detained him. And yet, this action is not simply the individual act of 4 cops. It is another example of the deep-seeded racist system all around us.

Calling out these racist acts, and doing all we can to break down the racist system that feeds them, is holy work. It's work the Church has too often neglected to do, much to our detriment. And yet, if we firmly believe in the belovedness of all of God's children, we must do and be better. As we prepare to celebrate Pentecost this weekend, we remember that the Church was formed by the Spirit being poured out on a multitude and diversity of people. 2,000 years later, the work of anti-racism is part of the work of restoring and healing that holy multitude.

Please join the HMBFC Anti-Racism group as we try to figure out how to do that work as people of faith (and others who are allies). We will not do this work perfectly. The road is long and the work is hard, but we are committed to slowly bending the arc toward justice.
