Subject: A new Spencer LaJoye song for Lent!

Dear Hot Metal Community,

This week we enter into the season of Lent. This is traditionally the 40(ish) days leading up to Easter that was used to prepare those who would be baptized on Easter Eve. In the centuries of the Church, it has become synonymous with fasting or "giving up" something, inspired by Christ's own fast in the desert for 40 days as he sparred with the devil (the story we'll read Sunday!).

This year, our theme is "Seeking: Honest Questions for Deeper Faith." We'll once again be using resources from our friends at A Sanctified Art, who always put together beautiful and thoughtful artwork, prayers, and music. We hope that this theme will encourage us all in this season to not run away from the hard questions of our faith, and to not see doubt and seeking as a scary thing, but rather one that can be embraced by God, because questions and wondering are embraced by God.

A centerpiece of our worship during this season is that we'll be opening each week with a song by our friend, Spencer LaJoye, entitled "The Land of the Seeking." Like all of Spencer's music, they weave together beautiful melodies with earnest and honest questions and their own journey of deconstruction and doubt that is so familiar to many of us. I encourage you to watch the music video here, both to familiarize yourself with the song and to see beautiful artwork by the many artists of A Sanctified Art that will root us throughout this season.

Compassion Team's Listening Season - February 19-April 9

The Compassion Team (and friends) will lead us in a Lent-long “Listening Season.” Sign Up for a 1-to-1 conversation with a team member, and share your story, passion, and heart. We have a goal of listening to 66 people! By hearing all our stories, we’ll be able to discern together where the next chapter of Hot Metal is going to go!

Lenten Nurturing Group - STARTS THIS WEEK!

We'll be discussing "Spiritual Direction" by Henri Nouwen and tackling some BIG QUESTIONS for Lent! Spiritual Direction is a book of collected works from Henri Nouwen, curated by some of the students who knew him best. Offering gentle guidance and wisdom, this book attempts to give wise advice on how to live a deep spiritual life in connection with others. Some of the questions it explores are: Where do I begin? Who am I? Who is God for me? Where do I belong? This book is ideal for anyone who is looking to engage deeper in their faith - whether you are in a place of deconstruction, reconstruction, or anywhere in between - we hope you'll join us! This will be mainly led and facilitated by Nathan Rosswog! Yay!!! Join us using the Sunday Worship Zoom Link!
