As you might know, there are Facebook groups for music school owners.
A while back, I decided to run an experiment.
I went to the search function in several of the groups and typed in these words:
“Stressed”
“Angry”
“Hurt”
What I found were lots of impassioned posts about the injustices that we school owners face in our career!
I decided to focus on a particular issue: money.
Here is a sampling of the issues that I found:
1. A school owner was angry because someone quit and they owed for one lesson… $32.
2. A teacher angry and stressed because someone disputed them on a book fee ($6)
3. A school owner was upset because a student used their restroom and broke their soap dispenser (I imagine it could be replaced for less than $10?)
I would point out that each of these posts had MANY supportive comments, as well as tons of comments from other teachers and studio owners who ALSO had something like this happen to them.
In each case, the teacher was asking for advice on:
1. How do I prevent this from happening again?
2. What should I do to collect on the money that I’m owed?
3. Should I change my policy to prevent future losses like this?
Here’s the point:
Instead of focusing on such tiny losses, why not focus on creating a business in which this stuff barely registers for you?
I don’t mean that you should run your school poorly.
You should have good policies. Good systems. Good people.
But there is a BIG difference between having a system for something…
…and spending three days worrying about a $32 problem.
The problems that bother you say a lot about your school.
As my studio grew, I stopped caring about a lot of these little things.
Not because the problems disappeared.
The business underneath them got stronger… and as they did, I stopped getting bent out of shape by these insignificant issues.
And I think the exact same thing happens as a music school grows.
A teacher quitting feels VERY different when you have a reliable hiring process.
Losing 10 students feels different when you have strong retention and a predictable way to replace them.
A bad month feels different when you understand your numbers, have healthy margins, and have money in the bank.
And taking a week off feels different when your staff can actually run the school without calling you 14 times.
Ultimately, it’s about choices.
The choices you get to make when you have a stronger business.
This is why Nate and I created the Founder’s Forum…
We help music school owners build the marketing, financial, hiring, retention, leadership, and operating systems that make the business stronger…
So that problems that used to feel HUGE start feeling a whole lot smaller.
If you’d like:
More predictable enrollment
Better retention and fewer students to replace every month
A stronger team that doesn’t need you involved in every decision
More profit and confidence about where your money is going
A school that can grow without creating a bigger job for you
…then I’d invite you to apply for Founder’s Forum.
The next Forum starts October 1st… we are less than a week away!
But - we’ve had 3 more school owners join in the last few days and we have a few seats left.
Fill out the short application below. If it looks like we can help, you’ll be able to book a free call with me.
We’ll look at your school, figure out what’s actually holding it back, and I’ll give you my opinion about what you should work on next.
Whether you join us or not, you’ll leave with a plan.
