Want to get a head start in protecting your boundaries? Here are two things that helped me.
1- Detach from your business. Rather than saying "I'm not sure that I can do that...", say something like "I have a policy that..." By stating it as a policy that your business has, it creates some detachment and feels more firm. If they question the policy and ask for it to change, it also makes it easier to say "Unfortunately that policy is in place for a reason and I'm not able to ignore it."
2- Practice the "yes, and". If a client asks for additional photos or time, or if they ask for a price reduction, find a way to say yes that is also fair to you. If they ask for extra things, you can say "Yes, absolutely, but I want to make sure you know that will be an additional $xxx that will be invoiced for the additional time/photos." If they ask for a price reduction, you can say "Yes, I can absolutely fit that budget! For that rate, I would be able to reduce the package and include the following:" In both cases, you're saying yes to their request, but either charging additional for their request or reducing the work you deliver for their lower price. |
