Happy Summer!
Fremont Fest Announcement!

Hello All! We’re hoping your pets made it through July 4th noise without too much difficulty, but we know there are some animals who have an exceptionally rough time. If you know you have one of those pets, please remember to visit us before it gets too close to New Years or July 4th next year so you have a chance to try out some different calming products and be well prepared. I guess that we can be grateful that though the noise was still remarkably bad for a city that has a burn ban and vegetation that’s already reduced to brown crispy bits, we only had 9 fires this year vs. 22 last year. Are hearts go out to those that were involved in the one tragic fire on Weidler (see more in Neighborhood News below).

Thanks to Remy for his crazy enthusiastic "Yay! It's Summer!" face. He's one happy guy!

We do have some fun neighborhood news! The Beaumont Business Association has announced that we’ll be having a Fremont Fest street fair on Saturday August 21st!
Unfortunately I won’t be able to pull off a parade this year, as honestly, I don’t have the bandwidth or the staffing to make it happen. Also, the dramatic increase of booths over the past several years has made it too crowded on the street to accommodate the parade - the crowds are so thick that it’s hard to get the parade past the booths, and confused pedestrians find themselves pushing a stroller upstream through the middle of a parade, wondering why there are so many kids on decorated bicycles clogging up the street!
I do miss the days when we first opened (coming up on 17 years ago!) When neighbors sat on the sidewalk waiting for the parade to come by and cheering as we passed. In those days, it was mostly the businesses that set up tables outside our stores, so the street was wide open for parades and the draft horse cart that would give free rides up and down the street. I know there are still a lot of our customers who might remember that! I want to thank all of you that participated in our parade for 17 years (a few of you never missed it!) I have fond memories of much of that, but feel a bit of relief at not having that giant responsibility of sponsors and permits and marching bands and various community groups, ribbons and prizes, promotion, etc every year! My hair’s getting too silver for that these days!
SUMMERTIME MEANS FLOAT COATS AND SWAMP COOLERS!

Timmy's here to tell you that Ruff Wear makes the best summer gear, bar none! Their float coats are by far the best design we've seen for canine life jackets, and we love the handle on the back!

Swamp coolers are one of the best products we sell. Any dog can become heat stressed, and we have to worry about that as temperatures are rising. It's especially important to protect short-nosed breeds like Timmy the Boston Terrier, Bulldogs, Frenchies, etc as they could be more susceptible to heat stress due to the shape of their faces. Timmy's mom just wets the coat, wrings it out and hits the town. The outer layer reflects the sun away, and the moist layer evaporatively cools the dog and is easily recharged by pouring a bit of water right over the jacket when you're out on an adventure. You can reach under it and feel the cooling action at work!

FOUR LEAF ROVER PROBIOTICS

Mike is good at trolling the internet looking for unique new products for us to look into. He mentioned that he’d found a company that had some really really interesting products for dogs that I was going to love. When I dug into their website, I found so many unique and intriguing products. Their ingredients were exciting and thoughtfully chosen. They backed it all up with great blog posts and really informative helpful staff to help answer questions. My staff is already sick of me geeking out on these super cool ingredients (though they like these sort of helpful products too, but I feel bad about how much I’m making them read, as we want everyone to be able to discuss these products with you and help you make good choices). My problem now is that I’m seriously at risk of creating a 20 page newsletter if I were to tell you about all of them, and especially if I were to try to fit in all of the reasons why they might really work for some of your most common problems. So, I’ve been writing about them to help the staff learn about them, and then putting those articles onto our blog so people can choose to just read about products that are relevant to their issues. Over the next few newsletters, I’ll tell you about all of these new formulas.
To start, let me tell you about three new probiotic formulas that are for somewhat different purposes

(please remember that it's a very good rule of thumb to introduce all new supplements a pinch at a time and gradually increase to the recommended dosage)

“Protect” Probiotics: Does your dog suffer from occasional or chronic loose stool? Does your dog eat dirt? Does your dog eat poop? Has your dog been on antibiotics or metronidazole recently? This might be the formula for you.
Protect” is an ideal daily probiotic. It’s perfect for using after a round of antibiotics, and is actually excellent for use DURING a course of antibiotics to protect the gut from antibiotic damage. It’s useful for intermittent or chronic loose stool. Additional ingredients are excellent for detox to get rid of free radicals, heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides and other toxins. It’s perfect for dogs who eat dirt and poop. I’ve broken down the ingredients for you and why they work. I’ve learned so many fascinating things about these soil based probiotics that I have resolved to find some for humans so I can get on board. Click here to read and learn more. Oh no - This just in: The company just let us know that they're out of "Protect" but they'll be shipping it out Monday the 19th. Let us know if you want us to call you when it's in!

“Bifido for Fido”Probiotic/Prebiotic blend: Does your dog have chronic digestive upset, frequent constipation, chronically poor gut health, or chronic bowel diseases like IBD? This might be the formula for you. The proper balance and amount of gut bacteria are critical to your dog's health. Bifido For Fido is a veterinary formulated blend of probiotics and prebiotics designed to promote a healthy gut and immune system. It’s proven to promote diverse gut colonies. Each probiotic strain in BFF is carefully chosen for its ability to survive the stomach acid and reach the gut. Plus, they've added Saccharomyces boulardii, a special yeast that can battle Candida. Click Here to read about how it may help.

"Gut Guard" Probiotics: Does your dog have itchy skin and frequent ear infections? Do they lick their feet? Do they have an odor to them that smells somewhat like Fritos, especially in these areas? Have you had to use steroids or medications to help these symptoms? Do you have to keep switching foods to keep inflammation at bay, or have you gone on to prescription hydrolyzed proteins? This formula may help. Some of these (often expensive) tactics can sometimes help to alleviate some of the worst symptoms, but the one thing they do not do is help your dog get rid of these problems and truly heal.
The primary use for this product will be for chronic yeast infections of the ears/skin and food allergies. Yeast problems and reactions due to food sensitivities are likely systemic, so treating just the ears or the skin won’t easily eliminate it. These problems are often intertwined with damage to the lining of the gut, and repairing it is critical to help these dogs heal. Read more here to learn more.

Sneak Peaks: There are medicinal mushroom formulas for immunity (for cancer treatment or prevention as well as useful for allergies), “Green Eggs” which helps with joint comfort and mobility, and Bovine colostrum which is amazing for environmental allergies - many people mention going off of Apoquel! Scroll down on each of these pages to read reviews!

SILVERVINE STICKS FOR CATS ARE IN BULK!

If you haven't tried Silvervine on your cats, they may be missing out on a really good time! Silvervine is a plant in the Kiwi family that has similar effects to catnip. In fact, many cats who don’t care much about catnip actually react much better to Silvervine. It’s nontoxic and safe just like catnip. We do have containers of loose silvervine leaves, but these sticks are actually really fun to play with. They can be batted around, or you can hold the stick steady while they rub their faces on it. Some cats really like to chew the sticks, which could have some dental benefit. We have packages that have multiple sticks and loose leaf, but these bulk sticks lets you try a single stick and see what they think about them. Most silvervine is sourced from Asia, but all of our silvervine is wild grown in the Northwest and tested for safety in Washington. Check out this fun video of my friend’s kitty playing with a stick.

Newsletter special: If you like the stick, mention this newsletter at the register before the end of the month and we'll take 15% off of one 6-pack of sticks (which comes with some loose silvervine leaf)
SUSTAINABLY YOURS CAT LITTER!

We have a great new cat litter here in the store. We’ve wanted it for a while and finally have found space for it. We love it as it works so darned well! It’s a fine white sand made from corn and cassava that clumps amazingly well without breaking or crumbling, and those clumps never stick to the bottom. This means the box stays incredibly clean! It has exceptional odor-fighting properties. It instantly neutralizes offensive smells without added chemicals or fragrances, and it keeps on working no matter how many cats you have. This dust free litter is white, which makes it easier to keep the litter box tidy and spot differences in your cat's urine. Jackson Galaxy says ""It's THE BEST cat litter I've ever used in the big three categories: clumping, tracking, and odor control".

Amazing deal available through December!! Take $2 off of a 13lb bag, and Take $6 off of a 26lb bag!! Can use multiple times!

DOG TRIVIA

In this part of the world, dogs are being deployed to detect COVID non-invasively in a fraction of a second. With their stunning accuracy exceeding that of nasal COVID tests - 97% sensitivity in identifying positive samples and 91% in identifying negatives - will canine testing replace PCR tests?
