We're Open!
And Happy Juneteenth!
It's been such a pleasure to have both of our doors open wide! We love having so many of our old regulars back inside where we can chat and catch up. Even more fun is that we seem to have had loads of new customers who somehow found us after this whole Shidoobie began and have since become new regulars, but they've never had the chance to be in the store until now! Thank You to all that found us during Covid and actually stuck by us while we were curbside only. Welcome to the real store!
We encourage those of you that have been using curbside pickup to come on in and shop in person - it's done wonders for our morale to really interact with our customers, and it's a drastically less physical workload for us to be able to leave curbside behind. Sanity is also beginning to be restored without the phone ringing every minute or two! We still require masks in the store for now, especially because we still have an employee who is immune compromised enough to be ineligible for a vaccine at this point. She looks forward to when she can get it!
We'd like to thank our amazing employees who made it through the last challenging 18 months. We've been short staffed this whole time, and they've all worked their buns off. All of us have tired bodies and frazzled brains, and we're eternally grateful for them maintaining their positive attitudes, dedication to the job, and commitment to the happiness of our customers through it all.
We'd also like to say Thank You again to all of you that stuck by us, treated us kindly during all of this, remaining our loyal customers and friends. We're so lucky to have you!

Each participating business will have its own unique obstacles - we like creating a dog agility trial course that humans can run. Instead of Dashing for Donuts, this year's end-of-course treats are a choice between ice cream and beer! The run coincides with Juneteenth, Father’s Day and Pride, so we are encouraging everyone to express their celebrations during the run! NEW PRODUCT: GREEN ELEMENT CBD!
Wow - this product ticks ALL of our boxes! We’re always shooing away the seemingly endless number of reps that come by to try and sell us their CBD products, but the CBD market is saturated, and has been for a long time. I can’t imagine they’re that successful these days. My point is, it would take us a lot to ever consider bringing in a new CBD product to add to our very adequate collection. Many of you have been missing the beef knee caps that we used to have, and it’s taken us some time to find a replacement as we don't want any feed lot raised beef if we can avoid it. We’re excited by what we found - pasture raised bison knee caps have quite a bit of yummy dried stuff to work on on the outside. As always, It’s a good idea to supervise dogs with chews they haven’t had before. Check out the blog post I made showcasing many of our other favorite chews for dogs and for cats. I'll keep adding to it as we get new things.

| | NEW PRODUCT- NITROGEN CREATININE SCRUB FOR KIDNEY DISEASE!
Kidney disease is an all-too-pervasive health issue, especially for cats. (It’s so common that we have created a system in our food room for customers to help them shop for their animals with CKD (Chronic kidney disease).
We have a new product that I’m very eager for these customers to try. I was recently talking to a customer whose cat had been diagnosed with CKD, and she mentioned that her friend that works at a cat rescue organization had told her about a product called “Nitrogen-Creatinine Scrub” that she really liked. When I looked into it, I couldn't wait to order it. Creatinine and Nitrogen are are waste products removed from the body by the kidneys, which filter almost all of it from the blood and release it into the urine. This new product is a supplement that works by enhancing the pet’s gut microbiome flora. As certain flora proliferate, they take up nitrogen and creatinine which are then excreted in the stool. They say, “It is the only product on the market that can reduce both BUN and creatinine levels and studies have recently discovered that it lowers serum phosphate levels as well”.
The only ingredient is Acacia Senegal, otherwise known as Gum Acacia, or Gum Arabic. When I started researching this ingredient, I disappeared down a rabbit hole of fascinating articles that showed the amazing potential benefits for those with CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) due to the supplementation of Gum Acacia. One paper was a report of a young girl who achieved 6-years of dialysis freedom with this treatment. It could show a lot of promise for humans who live in countries without much access to treatments like dialysis. Multiple animal studies also show intriguing results, stating, “suggesting a promising potential for GA in protecting against renal failure progression.” and “From this study, we conclude that oral administration of Gum Arabic could conceivably alleviate adverse effects of CRF.” The rabbit hole got deeper as I discovered other reported health benefits from Gum Acacia for humans (acacia fiber is said to suppress appetite, reduce gut inflammation, alleviate constipation, relieve diarrhea, and support weight loss efforts by helping you stay full for longer. In a study published in 2012, researchers determined that it could help ease IBS symptoms. It may also lower cholesterol, help manage diabetes, support liver health, may be protective to heart tissue and more…neat, right?
That being said, we’ve never carried this before and are on the edge of our seats to have customers try it and tell us how their animals feel on it and how their next blood panel looks. (The owner of this company reported to us that it can take up to 3-4 months to see improvements in their blood panels, but that visible improvements may be seen in 4-6 weeks.) When introducing any new product, make sure to introduce it slowly and build up to the recommended dose. The company says it's a tasteless powder, but they've also attached a pipette, in case you need to mix the powder with water and give it by mouth.
I’d like to remind all of you with kidney patients that a high quality, molecularly distilled fish oil can provide excellent support and a reduction of inflammation for those with chronic kidney disease. I’d recommend Nordic Naturals brand for this purpose, and of course we have good recommendations for you regarding nutrition for these animals.

A bill that is headed to the Oregon Senate that would make it an official state holiday! It's very appropriate as Oregon has a long history of racial discrimination. As House Majority Leader Rep. Barbara Smith Warner said, "While this is an important day for many Black Americans, this is not a separate history, this is our history. For far too long, the experiences, contributions and stories of Black
people and people of color have been excluded from our nation’s legacy,
Oregon’s history and minimized in history books. We must not forget and
we must continue to share this history so it’s not forgotten.”
