Join Us For a Party to Benefit Animal Rescue in Houston!
Eat and Drink at Bottles on Wednesday!

Big Announcement! Bottles and Green Dog are teaming up for a Hurricane Pet Relief Fundraiser!! Come eat and drink and it will benefit Texas pet rescue efforts! Details for the event and also for supplies needed below.
They are of course truly overwhelmed right now in Texas (Austin Pets Alive has already transported 600 animals, is expecting up to 1,000 more in the next 24 hours, and anticipate having up to 2,000 by the end of the week! The SPCA of Brazoria County has over 1000 animals in their care as of 8/31)

Here are the details for the party: Come to Bottles at 5015 NE Fremont St on Wednesday the 6th between 3pm and 10pm to eat and drink! A portion of the proceeds will benefit these efforts. Tell your friends! Wednesday nights are vegan nights at Bottles as they host the very popular "Of Roots and Blooms" vegan pop-up. They are generously donating 10% of their food sales. A portion of beer sales and specially designated drinks will also generate donations, so take a bus, Lyft, or just walk on down and come get your drink on on their gorgeous shady patio!
Make sure to buy raffle tickets for our fabulous Green Dog gift bags - Bottles will also be donating shirts, growlers and hats to the raffle!
Thank you so much to Bottles for hosting this event and donating proceeds, to Of Roots and Blooms for cooking a lot of food for our hopefully large crowds and donating proceeds, and to Chelsea from Safe Dogs By the River for being able and willing to mobilize and bring donated supplies. See below for what you can donate.
Donations Needed!

Chelsea from Safe Dogs By the River is joining a big transport vehicle that's driving down to Houston to bring supplies and volunteer for pet rescue efforts, and she said we could gather donations. Do you have any of these things?
Sponges, mops, mop buckets, tarps, clean sheets, clean bath and beach towels, stainless steel bowls, aluminum baking pans to be used as temporary litter boxes, crates, Clorox wipes, bleach, disposable bowls, dog poop bags, hand brooms/dust pans, litter scoops, flat leashes all sizes, all sizes of martingale collars, rubber gloves, trash bags and paper towels are all needed. Bring them down before we close on Sunday to be included in her delivery. We are also collecting money (cash or check) at our counter, and are selling treats whose proceeds go entirely to this effort. If you come today you might be lucky enough to score some freshly baked pineapple upside down cake that Katie made to benefit the cause!

Saturday September 9th a portion of our sales at Green Dog will be donated to this rescue effort. Please put it on your calendar, come in and pick up a little something!
Thanks!!

Amazing Products You Haven't Discovered Yet:
Freeze Dried Hearts!!

Dr Karen Becker DVM says, “Taurine is an important amino acid for liver and gallbladder support. It’s essential for optimal blood flow, cardiovascular health, and the production of bile in both cats and dogs. Pets with less-than-optimal levels of taurine may be at greater risk of adverse effects from toxins. Although a minimal level of taurine is included in most commercial pet foods, taurine is easily depleted in stressed pets”. Taurine can be found naturally in milk, eggs, meat, and seaweed, however, amino acids like Taurine are easily damaged by high heat cooking, which is why you’ll generally see kibbles and cans supplemented with synthetic taurine. If cats don’t get enough taurine from the foods they eat they can die, but many holistic vets believe that it’s incredibly important for dogs as well, and a deficiency can cause serious eye and heart problems. Though synthetic taurine is far better for carnivores than no taurine, studies have shown natural taurine does some important jobs better. To this end, providing natural sources of taurine can go a long way towards supporting the health of both cats and dogs. Feeding real hearts is especially recommended for any pets that are dealing with heart issues themselves. "Like feeds like!"

Fresh or freeze dried
hearts are a great way to provide an excellent source of natural taurine. Small Batch makes freeze dried beef, turkey, lamb and chicken hearts, and Oma's Pride makes freeze dried turkey hearts. For the next week, mention the newsletter and get 15% off of any freeze dried heart treats! Read more about hearts and taurine in our latest blog post!
A Conversation About Senior Dogs and Diet

Myth #1: I've always heard older dogs need lower protein diets. Isn't that the case?
- Nope. Current research shows that older dogs actually require significantly higher protein.
- As dogs age, their bodies become less efficient at metabolizing proteins.
- Increasing protein helps to prevent muscle wasting.

Myth #2: But couldn't too much protein hurt their kidneys?
- This idea was based on studies done on rats, not dogs.
- Rats have evolved to have different nutritional needs than dogs, and more recent studies have shown that no amount of protein can hurt a healthy dog kidney. (same goes for cats).

Myth #3: If my dog is getting fatter, shouldn't I switch to feeding something with more carbs and fiber to help fill her up?
- As seniors age, reduced activity and increased carbs can result in weight gain.
- Dogs (and cats) have no metabolic need for carbohydrates, and increasing fiber can actually block absorption of necessary nutrients.
- Carbs metabolize in to sugars, which can lead to obesity, inflammation, increased arthritis pain, and can potentially lead to chronic yeast and digestive issues.
- Many commercial kibbles (even grain free) can have very high carbohydrate content - some on the market are 50% or more!

Moderately reducing the fat content (they need some fat in their diet) and also reducing carbs while maintaining daily activity is your recipe for weight loss success! Next time you're in, ask us what percentage of your kibble is carbs  - we can help you!

Myth #4: My bag of dog food should say "Senior" on the label.
- Some “senior” dog foods (like Orijen Senior) are doing a good job keeping up with what we currently know about the nutritional needs of seniors, but many are not.
The bigger truths are:

– All dry dog food is highly processed food
– Every dog is different – some become less active and start to put on weight, and some stay active but start to lose muscle mass and get skinny. Tailoring their diet to their needs is important.

Considering switching to (or integrating some of) a minimally processed, commercially made, balanced whole food diet will generally be the most supportive thing you can do to maintain their health.

Read our recent blog post for a more comprehensive look at senior dogs and their diets and find out a neat trick about how to calculate the percentage of carbs in the foods you're feeding.
