Happy Thanksgiving!
A time to be grateful

Thank You to everyone that took part in Fright Night on Fremont on Halloween Eve! What a fun community event it has become! The street was loaded with families all dressed up, including lots of cute dog costumes. Everyone was chatting and laughing outdoors with their neighbors, visiting the businesses for trick or treating, and having fun at the Haunted House. It was really a fun, safe, and positive way for the neighborhood to celebrate a holiday!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we really want to tell you how grateful we are to all of you that support our business!
We realize that there are more and more choices available to you in the area, so each time you make the conscious choice to shop with us, it means so much to us - it really is a significant challenge to operate a small independent business, and it doesn’t seem to get easier over time. We love that you are part of our little community.

Thanksgiving Human Health Tip:
MRI studies have shown that the feeling of gratefulness helps fight depression. They found that even in people who can't think of anything to be grateful for, the sheer act of searching for what you might be grateful for shifts your brain chemistry away from depression.
We are especially grateful for the relationships we have formed with you and your wonderful pets!

Please note that "Black Friday" hours will be limited (12pm-5pm). We aim for our employees to be able to spend more time with family and friends, and that people in general might take REI's lead and #OptOutside on Friday! More about that here.
Please support locally owned independent stores on Small Business Saturday instead, and throughout the holiday season!

SEASON'S FEEDINGS!

Please consider donating a bag of cat food during our annual Cat Food Drive!
Volunteers for the Feral Cat Coalition who trap feral cats and bring them in for spay/neuter will be sent home with food to support the cats that are not good candidates for adoption.  Here’s how it works: We do holiday food drives a little differently than many other stores. Some stores will just encourage you to add a bag of discounted food to your purchase to be donated. We choose to offer one good quality, yet inexpensive, brand of food available to purchase AT OUR COST - we don’t make a penny on it.  Please add a bag onto your purchase in November (5# bags are $9.75 and 12# bags are $18.) You can even purchase a bag over the phone! For every 6 bags we donate, First Mate will donate a bag. You are also welcome to bring in unopened bags of other dry cat food to donate. Each customer who donates a bag will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift certificate (one ticket for small bags, two tickets for big bags).

December will be dog food donation month. As with the cat food donations, one brand of food (First Mate) will be offered in two sizes at our cost. We’ll be donating again to the Pongo Fund.

HILARIOUS TURKEY TOYS AND YUMMY THANKSGIVING TREATS!

Don't miss out on  fun "stuffed" turkeys! Our Thanksgiving display has a variety of nifty treats including a powdered pumpkin and goat milk ice cream that you add water to and freeze. There's even a delicious locally made dog-appropriate holiday meal in a pouch that you can heat and serve on the big day.

There are a variety of fun toys, including a little rubber turkey for small dogs with a hole to stuff with treats. However, the funniest items on the table are the stuffed turkey toys. They come in several sizes and some that combine Thanksgiving traditions, evoking the look of a football. If your friends or family are hosting Thanksgiving and they have a dog, don't go empty handed! Bring a stuffed turkey toy!

SHANKZILLA BONES!

These are our new favorite bones. First, because they’re from grass fed cows, like all of our Beef and bison chews (no feed lots!), and second because they’re air-dried instead of roasted to prevent splintering. The other great thing that air drying does is that the connective tissue on the outside of the bone is not entirely crunchy- it easily becomes “rehydrated” by the dog’s saliva and turns into a big awesome project to remove it! In my opinion, this is likely the most work a dog will do with a chew. I gave one to each of my friend’s two American Bulldog super-chewers and hours later they were exhausted. I was so impressed at how much work they had to do! Remember, all hard chews have the potential to hurt a tooth if a dog is trying to break a bone, and any and all new chews you give your dog should be supervised the first time or two they chew them. The neat thing about this one is that the chewing style seems to become more about getting the stuff off of the outside, instead of trying to destroy the bone itself.
We think they're even better than the Bison full shank that many of you have loved.

LUMPS AND BUMPS? WARTS? CANCER? MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS TO THE RESCUE!

Among MANY other benefits, medicinal mushrooms are amazing for supporting the immune system and shrinking growths. We’ve seen amazing results! Papillomas (warts with a cauliflower appearance) are somewhat common in puppies or animals with compromised immune systems (cats too). They are viral in nature and can be transferred to other animals. We’ve seen great results, shrinking and even eliminating them with medicinal mushrooms. We’ve even seen dramatic shrinking of large tumors! These medicinal mushrooms are non-hallucinogenic and non-toxic.These medicinal mushrooms are carefully grown and selected and they contain both fruiting bodies and mycelium (important when shopping for mushrooms not to buy mushrooms that are just mycelium). They are well researched and are reported to have the following benefits: Helping to maintain a normal inflammatory response, antioxidant protection, helping to support liver and kidney function, helping to support blood sugar and blood pressure to be within normal ranges, helping to maintain normal histamine levels, and supporting seasonal skin allergies.
We have 3 brands of Medicinal mushrooms: Holistic Hound, Four Leaf Rover, and Bixbi (we’d suggest rotating between them). All of these are a powder, but Holistic Hound also makes a soft duck chew (pictured above) with the mushrooms and CBD (great for hip and joint as well as cancer/growths)

Here are a few testimonials about Four Leaf Rovers Immunity mushrooms:

“I bought this product for my aging dog, to help support her immune system and in the hope that it would help with her fatty lymphomas. Not long after buying this mushroom powder and adding it to her food every day, I saw a reduction in the size of many of her lumps. She had a lump about the size of an egg in her throat area for years with no change in size. Now....I can hardly find it. She had one on the inside of each thigh and now they are less than half the size they were before. She had one in the front of her ear that had continued to get bigger, but now it is completely gone. While I can’t prove that this product is responsible for the shrinking lumps....I don’t know what else could be. She had the lumps for years with no shrinkage until I started this product”
.

“Had a 10-month old GSP diagnosed with IMHA. There are a number of antibiotics she can't take because of her condition. On 8/31 she developed a papilloma on her lower right lip. By 9/15 it had turned into a cauliflower. I started her on IMMUNITY on 9/20 and by 9/28 the papilloma was gone!”.

And a few from Holistic Hound mushroom powder:

“I have an American bull dog who desperately needed skin support. We changed foods, added supplements, changed laundry detergent, weekly bathing. Nothing seemed to keep it at bay. I started adding this to her diet and we started seeing improvements right away. I wish the dosing was a little easier but I did ask some questions from the website chat and the person I spoke with had a sharpei with bad skin, They were AMAZINGLY helpful! I hope to try more products in the future! I am recommending this to all my grooming clients with seasonal allergy issues”.

”My dog does Parkour Now!  I wouldn’t consider our dog “old” but he just turned six. He’s a shitzu mix. He’s has pretty bad seasonal allergies, skin issues etc.. not only did this immensely help his allergies and skin issues but now I can tell he has so much more energy. Not that he acted old or anything, but I can tell that now that he is getting so many more nutrients he is happier and has more energy to jump and play around! We have definitely noticed lots of positive benefits that we weren’t expecting. It’s crazy how much happier and how much better your dog feels after getting the proper nutrition. We will definitely purchase again and recommend to literally everyone!”

Remember:
- These recommendations shouldn’t take the place of a veterinary consult to get lumps and bumps diagnosed.
- Good reviews are many, but that doesn’t guarantee results for everyone.
- A raw food diet goes a very long way towards helping allergies, cutting out inflammatory carbohydrates that feed cancers, and supporting skin and coat health.
- All new supplements should be started with a pinch and then build up slowly to the recommended dose to avoid digestive surprises.
-A little bit of canned food is a perfect way to make sure they get the whole amount of any supplement and also so that picky dogs agree to eat new things)
- I take medicinal mushrooms myself, and I feel like they have kind of a strong flavor, but many reviews mention that their dogs love the taste!

Amazing testimonial from one of our customers. Her Doberman had a big tumor on her right back leg (look at her ankle/hock), and after using medicinal mushrooms, she sent us photos. I can't even see evidence of it now!
IT'S SWEATA WEATHA!

Gold Paw sweaters are like no others. They’re buttery soft and comfy, they’re stretchy enough to make them super easy to put on and take off, and they’re cozy warm without being too hot. Available in many sizes from teeny-tiny to big, these are great under a harness or jacket to give an extra layer of warmth and to protect against harness irritation. Even better, this family-run company proudly manufactures in the USA and many of their materials are milled in the U.S. too. They always have an eye to reducing their environmental impact whether that’s including recycled materials in their textiles, using biodegradable packaging, or teaming up with partners like 1% For The Planet. They’ve also teamed up with “Eden Projects” to plant over 700,000 trees to date!
When Otis the fluffy cat was scratching his sides raw from a reaction to flea bites, we used a gold paw fleece to protect his skin and it worked like a charm. You’ll be jealous when you touch it, but luckily, you can go to their website and check out their human fleece products - they even make leggings!

MAKE YOURSELF VISIBLE!

Fall is a difficult time for dog owners, as it's dark by 4:45, meaning you might be spending a fair amount of time walking your dogs in the dark. The unfortunate result of this time change is a higher number of traffic accidents and pedestrian deaths.
We’ve had some troubles getting a lot of light-up options, but there are still some products on our shelves that can really help you and your dogs to stay safe.
The Cycle Dog reflective leashes are wildly reflective, as you can see from this photo (3rd photo on top). They come in several colors, and are made right in Portland from recycled bicycle tire inner tubes! This leash is unaffected by wet or muddy conditions, and the rubber makes it super grippy. They also come with a ring near the handle that doubles as a bottle opener so you can have the coolest dog at the party!
Ruff Wear makes the best light for a dog's collar, as it's completely waterproof, charges with a USB cable (included), and each light has 3 colors to choose from. (pictured in red on bottom right). Its 3 light modes include Slow Flash, Fast Flash, or Always On.
Nite Ize has practical options, including a nifty rechargeable LED "necklace" that you can cut to fit your dog (top right). They cycle through 3 different colors or can display one color of your choosing. These allow your pet to be visible from all sides. We of course have some glow in the dark fetch toys and light up battery powered balls, making fetching in the dark much more fun.
You might also check out Foot Traffic for some clever ways to illuminate yourself, like a light-up arm band so cars who are approaching you from behind will be sure to see you.

HILARIOUS P.L.A.Y. TOYS!

Play keeps coming up with the funniest toys. This collection has adorable mushrooms, sunflowers, potted succulents, and watering cans, on one end of the table, and Lollipops, ruffled potato chips that come out of their bag, , pizza slices, cola cans with “fizzy” soda spilling out, and soft serve ice cream. All of these toys have crinkles, squeaks, and/or giggle noises. The big reason we love this company is that it’s a B-corp company. This means that they’ve done a lot of work to prove that they’ve woven sustainability and ethics into every part of their business, from products to treatment of employees. And they’re CUTE!!!!! These make great gifts.
