Happy Halloween!
The store is looking fun as we unpack the hilarious Halloween toys and treats! Come look at our cute displays and maybe pick up a stuffed pumpkin, an alien, a mummy rope toy, a rubber skull, some fun bagged Halloween treats or the Halloweeniest dog treat we have: the freeze dried duck head! Nothing is more beloved to dogs (and it sure is creepy!)
Please check out this blog post of ours about how to keep pets safe on Halloween, especially if you have a new puppy! If there is trick-or-treating this year, it's a holiday that can either be really stressful or a fun and positive socialization experience. Little bonus in this post: some breed specific templates for pumpkin carving!

There are heat-free peanut butter cookies in the shapes of Spooky ghosts, giant candy corns, and goofy Jack o’lanterns are made with organic ingredients, frosted with a yogurt based frosting and the colors are all made with foods (orange is carrot powder, yellow is turmeric, etc). They're going fast!

We love locally made products and meat products that come from humanely raised animals, and dogs love sausages, so this checks our boxes! They’ll be eating what has been the very best charcuterie in the nation (does this make your dog “Bougie”?) They consistently source environmentally regenerative, humanely-raised pork from the Pacific Northwest. O.P. says, “As charcuterie makers, we believe that one of the best ways to help the environment is to minimize our waste. People like to give dogs veggies, but the truth is, dogs have a hard time digesting raw veggies, which is why you see raw carrots come out looking the same as they went in. The reason for this is that dogs don’t make the enzyme called cellulase that would help them to break down the cell walls of plants (dogs are better at digesting meat). Gently cooking veggies (like Swell has done) helps to unlock their benefits.

Honey Glazed Carrots: Glazing carrots with just a touch of honey and ginger makes them over-the-top delightful. They simmer them with a splash of coconut milk and a few spices, and it’s so tasty that it could be confused with dessert. (Yes, you're darned right we tried it - it’s yummy! Dogs thought so too.) Thaw and drizzle over their meals.
Veggie Cheddar Melange: Imagine a Dutch oven slowly simmering with broccoli, zucchini and butternut squash. Just when those vegetable flavors are coming together, they fold in a dash of cheddar and top it off with just a touch of coconut milk. Dogs who sampled it in the store were very enthusiastic about trying it!
Sweet Potato Medley: Beautiful and bright colored beets and berries combine so well with the earthy sweetness of sweet potato, it’s like a match made in heaven. Really not much else is needed for this perfect blend but they are going for Swell here so of course they top it off with just the right spices and that little splash of coconut milk. (It's super yummy to us too).

| | | KURE PET FOOD PRODUCTS ARE STARTING TO ARRIVE!
We're excited to have some of the new Kure milks and fish broths in our freezers! To catch some of you up that might not know about it, The founders of Answers Pet Food left the Answers company, and they have created a new company called KURE. We've known these women for more than a decade, and we are excited about anything that they make! They pioneered the entire concept of fermenting raw pet food, which created products that are able to support and protect even the most compromised pets. They're also busy creating new health manuals with protocols for different chronic health issues,(something they did at Answers with the help of the nutritionist and the holistic veterinarian that they hired to be resources for customers. Actions like this made them unlike any other pet food company, and we are so relieved that we didn't have to lose them. We know that each of the products that Kure produces and the farms that they use are as good or better than what Answers is doing.
FYI - side by side the goat and cow kefir milks and fish broth are remarkably similar in nutrient breakdowns and ingredient panels, with a few tiny beneficial changes. They're visiting their farms every morning, and overseeing every detail, as they always have done (this company is officially farmer-owned). The next round of products that we'll be seeing will be a lovely looking jiggly chicken bone broth and beef and chicken formula foods (a bit cheaper per pound than the Answers patties). Made right here in Portland, this kit contains everything you need to grow healthy, fresh wheat grass for your kitties. Just add water and sunshine!
These are upcycled by using containers that would otherwise end up in a recycling bin or garbage, plus scrap yarn that usually isn’t enough for a larger project. If you haven’t discovered Wildhearts Wellness, you’re missing out. Not only do they have a lovely, peaceful yoga studio with lots of room to spread out, the owner Dr. Maura has brought together amazing holistic health services. She herself is a gifted acupuncturist with many other tricks up her sleeve, but she has a knack for also finding gifted healers of all kinds, from chiropractic (Dr Daniel is not the yank-and-crack kind but an empathetic, talented, gentle manipulator of soft tissues who really listens to you and your body), to massage therapy, pilates, nutritional therapy, and some excellent holistic doctors. There seems to be a shortage these days in holistic practitioners, both veterinary and human, which is a shame. Holistic doctors learn traditional medicine, and then also additional training and practice of more natural ways of helping the body heal with fewer side effects and an emphasis on actually healing the body as opposed to just suppressing symptoms.
