Happy Spring Flowers!!

Lights out For Migrating Birds:
I just returned from a "Bird Nerd" vacation in Portal Arizona. Portal is a true bird haven, and is considered one of the best birding destinations in the country, especially during spring migration when massive numbers of birds are flowing through this area. Birds that have wintered in Central America are starting their journey north, traveling at night and resting and eating in the daytime.  (If you're a birder, talk to Christine about this amazing birding destination!)
Many of these birds are flying over Portland on their way farther North. The Audubon Society of Portland reminds us, "Millions of birds migrate across North America every year, covering hundreds to thousands of miles. Most of these birds, some that weigh as little as half an ounce, make this remarkable and perilous journey at night, visualizing the magnetic pull of the earth and using the moon and stars to set their course. By reducing skyglow over our cities, we can help them make it to their destinations safely". This can be as simple as closing your blinds at night to reduce glare outdoors to turning off big overhead flood lights. Read more here

Other things we can do to help birds thrive in our urban :
Make windows safer: Install screens, or apply stickers made to prevent birds from hitting your windows.
Don't let your cat roam freely In the United States alone, outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year. Although this number may seem unbelievable, it represents the combined impact of tens of millions of outdoor cats. Give your cat environmental enrichment by providing a Catio (a secure outdoor enclosure where your cat can enjoy the outdoors without harming birds). Mike and I are working on bringing Walter on outdoor adventures on a harness and leash and he's loving it!
Reduce your lawn and plant native plants instead — Lawns do little to support birds, while native plants sustain birds and pollinators like bees and butterflies, and they can provide shelter and nesting areas. In the Fall, leave an area with some leaves instead of removing all of them to provide areas that birds use to forage for insects, etc.
- Avoid pesticides — They're toxic to birds and reduce insects, which birds rely on for food; avoid using pesticides in your home and garden and choose organic or biodynamic food produced without pesticides. It's better for you and your pets too.
Choose shade-grown coffee — Sun-grown coffee contributes to forest destruction and requires pesticides and fertilizers; shade-grown coffee preserves forests and helps migratory birds survive the winter.

Cat Box Classics!
The owners of this company say, "After moving into a home we really liked, we wanted a cardboard cat house that wasn't covered in cartoons, shaped like fire engines or, worse yet, cut up out of old, brown shipping boxes." They decided to create scratch and sleep boxes that were designed for cats but would actually look good in their apartment. One design has famous works of art on each side with holes for kitty heads to peer out (which makes for fun photos!), and others are just pretty. Even Better, They check all of our boxes (so to speak) as they are cat-safe, made from recycled cardboard with soy- based ink and nontoxic glue, and 10% of their Profits go to Cat Aid Agencies!

HIGH VITAMIN FERMENTED COD LIVER OIL!
People don't generally love the flavor of cod liver oil, but lucky for us, dogs usually love it!

Why Cod Liver Oil?
The Whole Dog Journal points out that “The vitamins in cod liver oil have been proven essential for growth, healthy bones, proper development of the brain and nervous systems, normal sexual development, and a strong immune system. In 2002, researchers in Wales found that cod liver oil’s omega-3 fatty acids disable enzymes that destroy cartilage. As a result, cod liver oil delays and even reverses the “irreversible” destruction of joint cartilage and inflammatory pain associated with arthritis. All of cod liver oil’s human benefits are shared by dogs, including improved memory function, reduced behavioral disorders, and enhanced immunity.
America’s dogs are increasingly susceptible to obesity, insulin resistance, and adult-onset diabetes. Cod liver oil has been used in clinical trials on humans with insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes. In both conditions, cod liver oil improved glucose response and other markers of the disease.
Cod liver oil’s vitamin A can strengthen the immune system, fight infection, heal the skin, and repair the digestive tract. It is essential to the formation of bones and teeth, aids in fat storage, stimulates new cell growth, and improves the body’s utilization of protein".
With any new supplement we always encourage people to start with a very small amount and work up to the recommended dose.
Please read this article for more information about dosing and storage, answers for your questions about  the safety of fat soluble vitamins, why they use fermentation, why they're called "High vitamin" and more.

HIVE TOYS AND CHEWS!
Project Hive Pet Company was created to use business as a force for good. They bring joy to dogs by making the best possible dog toys and treats, using thoughtful design, quality ingredients, and sustainable materials. They don't stop there. Their purpose is to help save the bees. Bees are critical to our food supply. We depend upon bees to pollinate our flowers and our food—and our pets’ food! One in three mouthfuls of food exists because of bee pollination. In fact, in 2008, bees were declared the most invaluable species on the planet.

Their goal is to establish 50 million square feet of wildflower habitat by 2025. How does this help? Every acre of wildflower land provides nutritious habitat for a wide variety of native bee species.

We love their chews - They're made in the USA, Certified GMO free, vegetarian and grain free (organic honey and ground peanuts). They also have training treats!

Their toys are great too! Bouncy, non-toxic, and they all float and are top shelf dishwasher safe! The ball fits in a Chuck-it and has an unpredictable erratic bounce. The Hive toys, fetch stick and flying disc are made of the same great material, and the hives and stick have treat spots that fit their chew sticks.

GREEN TRIPE FOR DOGS AND CATS!

Green tripe is a superfood for pets. Tripe is the nutrient-rich stomach lining of an animal – in this case either lamb or beef – and the ‘green’ simply means it isn’t bleached or processed in any way. Tripe is a great topper, as it is rich in probiotics, Essential Fatty Acids, and digestive enzymes. It can help digestion, improve coat quality, and can help to boost the immune system. It can really entice picky eaters! It smells funky to us but is very enticing to most pets. Walter kitty gave it such a long sniff before trying it, then licked it all up.
Like with any new supplement, always start with a small amount and build up to more.  They recommend 1 oz per 7 pounds of animal, but I'd start smaller at first - for tiny dogs and cats especially, I'd start with 1/4 tsp. Boy do they love it!!

Newsletter special! Mention the Newsletter and Take 15% off of one container of Lotus Green Tripe OR K-9 cravings' (very convenient for dogs) tripe frozen patties before the end of the month!

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

For the first time in our history, this Neighborhood News section is bringing you some bummer news...

--Friday Pips’ window was broken
Fire on The Mountain had their building tagged Tuesday, and Tuesday night McPeets was tagged as well. Tuesday night Curaleaf’s window was broken.Tuesday Beaumont Florist was broken into and their delivery van was stolen.
- Noho’s Hawaiian Cafe was hit early Wednesday morning. Broken window and cash drawer taken.
RE: The two broken windows: Curaleaf says, “There is currently a vehicle who travels frequently through Fremont street who has vandalized these windows. (and likely Pip’s windows as well) They've driven past our establishment and used a slingshot possibly to pierce a hole through our front windows Yesterday marks the third incident with the same vehicle. Twice this week. First incident was April 18th.  It's a silver sedan. Possibly a Mitsubishi Galant? It has a damaged rear on the left side. Definitely noticeable. Can you please notify one of these businesses if you know anyone who owns the vehicle in question? We currently have an open investigation with local law enforcement. We appreciate that you keep your eyes open in case you can help these businesses get a license plate #, and spread the word to ensure everyone's safety throughout the Fremont neighborhood.
